He is not a “Karate Kid” to you, but a “Karate Kid”. Details

"The Karate Kid" - simple and clear. And in the original 1984 with Ralph Macchio \ Pat Morita he was "The Karate Kid" and in 2010 Jackie Chan \ Jaden Smith the name "The Karate Kid" remains. In our country, apparently, in order to avoid confusion, two names were introduced: “Karate Kid” and “Karate Kid” (it’s good that they didn’t add “to this vinaigrette”)Fighting baby"). It's really intriguing what the upcoming film will now be called, which mixed the actors of both films and the working title now: "Untitled Karate Kid Movie"What are your guesses? I'm betting on"Karate Guy 2"as probably the most adequate option.

Как уже stated earlier, there are plenty of rumors about the upcoming film about the karate guy, and they began to spread almost immediately after the 2010 release. Let's try to cut off at least a few of them.

Sequel to the original or remake?

First. Already for sure. Confusion arose when they began to talk about both the participation of Jackie Chan (which hinted at a sequel to the film with Jaden Smith), and the return of Ralph Macchio, which in turn connected the film with the original. And then this combo:

Jackie Chan: Hi all! We have important news.

Ralph Macchio: We are filming a new "Karate guy" together.

Chan: This is important news. But there is news that is even more important.

Macchio: More important than that?..

Ч: We are looking for the next karate guy.

М: Exactly. The global search for the star of our new film begins right now. So, let's "Wax on, wax off" *that's it.

Ч: Do you mean: "Put your jackets on, take your jackets off, pick them up" *

М: Maybe the new karate guy will have to do both. I am excited. Are you excited?

Ч: I'm very, very excited.

М: Let's do that!

Those who do not understand the phrase "Wax on, wax off" And "Jacket on, jacket off", are references to the teaching methods of mentors from the films of 1994 and 2010. But the main thing that can be taken away from this announcement (besides the casting itself) is the hint that there may be two teachers. More on this later.

If it's a sequel to the original, does that mean there will be Cobra Kai?

No, unfortunately it doesn’t mean that. How already said, at least, the creators of the Netflix series, according to John Hurwitz, have nothing to do with the new film:

The guys and I would like to cross the films “The Karate Kid” and “Cobra Kai” and hope someday it will work out. However, this project is not from us and does not focus on the Cobra Kai cast. I don't know much about it, but I wish you good luck with it.

It is impossible to completely exclude any participation of Cobra Kai, since the series is quite popular and such cooperation would only benefit everyone, but what is the information at the moment.

So what about the sequel?

The casting ended almost a month ago. And a new star"Karate Guy 2" will be a 24-year-old American actor of Chinese descent - Ben Wang. According to "insiders", Van impressed everyone at the casting, which demonstrated his deep connection with the character. It also helped that he speaks fluent Chinese and has good skills in many forms of martial arts, including karate, wing chun/kung fu, gumdo, kempo and taekwondo. Some of these skills have already been demonstrated in "American-born Chinese".

Later, known mainly from TV series (Robot Chicken, Goldbury, 4len..) joined the cast. Sadie Stanley. She will play Ben Van's girlfriend in the story, as well as his daughter Joshua Jackson, который тоже пополнил команду "Untitled Karate Kid Movie".

The latest news at the moment was the addition of a famous actress to the acting team Ming-Na Wen. Who she will play is not disclosed, but she previously played in "Street fighter"(1994), "The Mandalorian", "Mulan"and many other successful films.

The film's team also acquired behind-the-scenes names. So Karen Rosenfelt will be the producer, and took the director's chair Jonathan Entwistle. Writes the script for the film Rob Lieber.

Plot details are kept under the bonsai branches, but the new chapter will take the story to the East Coast and focus on a teenager from China who, through martial arts and a strict but wise mentor (or more likely, two), finds strength and his path in life.

  • If this is a continuation of the original, then it is logical that Macchio will play the same Daniel Larusso, but matured, probably becoming a real master. But will it be Jackie Chan "replacement" Pata Morita, or Mister Khan will come to the light (why not?) - we can only guess for now.

Initially, an overly optimistic finish was announced - June 7, 2024, but the film's release was postponed to December 13, 2024. They say that the delay is due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes blocking the industry, however, it is more likely that the release date was announced before the casting for the role of the main actor, was a little reckless.

We'll be waiting for trailer news and new details!
