Development of a video game with Tony Jaa has begun

Last week, developers from Thai “Studio HIVE” and film studio “Sahamongkol Film International” announced the development of a new video game based on the franchise “Ong-Bak”.

Akarapol Techaratanaprasert (Business Development Director of Sahamongkol Film International):

"Ong-Bak” is a powerful international BI brand. We very carefully select those to whom we sell licenses, and we saw in “Studio HIVE” a suitable partner for transferring “Ong-Bak” to gaming platforms. With their proper approach to combining film and game, a flawless interactive entertainment experience can be created.

Kan Supabanpot (CEO of “Studio HIVE”):

It is a great honor for our team to work on the very first multi-platform game based on “Ong-Bak”. As a Thai development studio, we loved the film and are well aware of the importance of brand equity. We will do everything possible to ensure that gamers get a lot of positive martial arts experiences from the video game.

To find out more about the game, its genre and participation Tony Jaa, resource playstationlifestyle.net took an exclusive interview with Kana Supabanpota.

When did the development of the game begin?

Kan Supabanpot: The first considerations for the project began in 2010, but the development of the game itself began about 6 months ago.

Is the game based on the first modern Ong-Bak, or is it based on sequels set in the 15th century? Or is it something completely different?

Kan Supabanpot: It's based on an unannounced project, so it's still a secret, and there weren't any screenshots in our first announcement.

What genre will the game be? Fighting, third-person action?

Kan Supabanpot: This will be a three-dimensional action game in a two-dimensional plane with a side view and scrolling.

Will it be possible to play as Ting, Tien or someone else?

Kan Supabanpot: We cannot provide exact details, but you will play as a character that you have recreated Tony Jaa.

Approximately how many fighting techniques will the character have?

Kan Supabanpot: We have about 20-30 techniques ready, but we have not yet completed work on the combat system. We try our best to include all the moves that fans love.

Will it be possible to use the environment as a weapon?

Kan Supabanpot: It doesn't really fit into the gameplay design we've developed.

Is Tony Jaa, or any other Muay Thai expert, involved in the development of the game?

Kan Supabanpot: Yes. Tony Jaa is personally involved in the development. It is also important to note that the choreography and techniques for the game are handled by Panna Rittikrai and his stunt team.

How much creative freedom was given to Studio HIVE by your business partners?

Kang Supabanpot: The team at Sahamongkol Film International has been very supportive of us, allowing us to use ideas not only regarding gameplay, but also visual and story elements.

“Ong Bak” had plenty of dark themes – drug abuse, overdoses and murder. Should we expect something like this in the game?

Kan Supabanpot: There will be a lot of cruelty and violence, but there will be no themes like drugs and murder.

The films also emphasized Buddhist philosophy, especially in Ong Bak 3. Will this affect the game?

Kang Supabanpot: We want to make sure that the game is an enjoyable experience for gamers and fans of the series. Elements of Buddhism will be present, but that is not our main goal.

There are already a lot of fighting games released for the PS Vita, and historically, portable consoles have been very popular in Asia. Will you be developing a game for PS Vita?

Kang Supabanpot: At the moment we cannot comment on the platforms, since the list will be officially announced at a later stage of development.

In 2008, Thailand banned several violent video games, including “Hitman” and “Killer Seven.” Aren't you concerned that such a ban could affect the content of the game based on “Ong-Bak”?

Kang Supabanpot: We are developing the game mainly for overseas fans, so the ban on violent games in Thailand will not affect us.

When are you planning to release the game?

Kan Supabanpot: We are planning a release at the end of 2012.

As a gamer, I am very happy about this news, and I did not expect this on this site HD According to Tom Yam Gunu, the game is a nightmare, yes. I recommend to everyone on PS2 the bitmap with Jet Li Rise to Honour)))

Yes, I already realized that it’s like SF or MK9, but I don’t know. It’s just been a while since there’s been something of such high quality from BitEmAp, so it’s hard to believe that this will turn out cool. I play Tekken 6 on PSP as Irvine. In principle, all the techniques are the same in Tony Jaa=) This thing makes me happy!

(You're commenting too quickly. Hold your horses) Whahahahahaha

    Like TYG :-D
No, I think everything will be much better. By the way, TYG will probably also make a game based on the second part.

I played one game Ong Bak. Complete slag.

It was a game based on Tom Yum Goong. Naturally it sucks. Agree.

Not a fighting game (not MK, Tekken, etc.) It will be a flat (right-left) three-dimensional action-adventure game.

I played one game, Ong Bak. Total slag. If it’s not a fighting game, then it doesn’t inspire hope either.
In any case, if I live to see the end of 2012, I’ll check it out.

I am happy too, especially since we are waiting for the announcement of a NEW MOVIE :-D
PS True, we are talking about a cartoon that should be finished in 2 years (2012), but that’s okay :)))
PPS There will be a lot of cruelty and violence in the game: maybe it will be in the film - I’m already waiting. Raid from Tony Jaa :-D

I understand so. the appearance will be similar to Street Fighting 4. but it’s unlikely to be a fighting game, rather an adventure game like Jackie Chan on a curling iron first if anyone still remembers that toy. I will be happy to protest, I think there will be a lot of stunts and blows from the film, and this will be the only feature, as for the rest, it does not inspire hope
