Director Stephen Fung Talks 'Kickboxer' Remake

Hong Kong director Stephen Fung (Stephen Fung) shared some details about the action remake in a recent interview "Kickboxer":

There has been a lot of hype in the press about your new film. Can you tell us a little about him?

Stephen Foon: Let's just say this is a remake of Kickboxer, and it will also be called Kickboxer. The script is already ready, so we are ready to begin the next phase of production and begin casting. This is an English-language film and will take place in Thailand. We hope to attract more Western audiences in this way.

Are we talking about Hollywood?

Stephen Foon: Kickboxer is a Hollywood movie, so I hope that happens.

What inspired you to film the remake?

Stephen Foon: I really liked this movie when I was young. I grew up in Hong Kong, where there were a lot of martial arts films and a lot of great action films, so the bar was set pretty high. At that time, Hollywood films were rather weak, with the exception of Kickboxer, one of the best in the genre. Van Damme knows a lot about martial arts, so in the film all the techniques he performs look realistic. We are not going to do a one-to-one remake. There must be something in it that “justifies” the very idea of a remake. I believe there is still more work experience to come.

Does this mean Van Damme will make a cameo appearance?

Stephen Fung: Perhaps... It's just that nothing has really been confirmed yet.

How will your approach to Kickboxer differ from your previous films?

Stephen Fung: If we take the style, then it is closer to reality. In the same "Tai Chi Zero" we tried to target family audiences, since there are not many such films in mainland China. As for the remake, it is possible that it will be more thought out, and the action in it will be tougher.

Note: interview with Stephen Fung dated March 19, 2014.

Do you think this film doesn’t give off the air of DTV? YES, both Batista and Carano are not great.

All fans (and creators) hope that because of Batista (after Guardians and James Bond), the film will be released in wide release and its success is almost guaranteed (after all, Batista is almost Rock already). Which gives me very serious doubts. In principle, if the film collects 40-50 million...it will be a mega success for it.

They write that the producers are tight on money. The crew was not paid and 150 people refused to work on the last day of filming in New Orleans.

    Most likely it's just working...

Yeah, but the official one will be something like Kickboxer: Redemption or Kickboxer: Final fight...

The name was changed to Kickboxer:Vengeance.

most likely it’s just a working one.. the green light for a title for distribution is still given by the distributor, but it has not yet been announced, and it’s unlikely that anyone in their right mind will release a movie with the title Kickboxer: Vengeance.... DTV will pay for verst) and Batista and Carano were obviously not taken for home viewing))

What the fuck is the original name))))

    On the horizontal bar...
In general, a strange film awaits us.

So Gina Carano has pulled herself up. :)

    O_0, what is this happening..

    Shahlavi will play Eric Sloane.

If we take “non-stop action”, then the last one that comes to mind is “Ninja 2”, it’s real: a fight across the stage.

    Author's gravatar

Eyes of the Dragon from Kung Le, Ong Bak, Kiss of the Dragon (probably)

    Author's gravatar

Covert operation had good action and die fighting, and the new fist of the dragon also had an almost non-stop fighting game.

    Author's gravatar

Kinopoisk says that the film will contain “non-stop action”......I began to hear this phrase often) They promised us the same thing in Skin Trade and in Pound of Flesh with the same Van Damme....
I wanted to watch films like this.
And so, an off-topic question for everyone: who can name films with similar themes?

Personally, I still remember: Raid (the first one), BKO: Bangkok Knockout, Brick Mansions (yes, yes, I liked the movie), Born to Fight (2004), well, you can also include the 13th district (the first one) here.

PS be more active guys, strain your memory)

But with Jean...I’ll just be glad to see him in a film with martial arts. =)

But I am confused by the director, and Batista, and the main character Moussi, and in general the idea itself. Dai Van Damme is embarrassing...

    In general, I agree.
The idea is not relevant at all now (at least with stuntmen and movie fighters in the leading roles, it is definitely not relevant).

Batista even became more famous as a film actor thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy (he played well there), but outside the framework of this franchise he is not much... ahem... more profitable (within the cinema) of the same Austin or Seine (to the Rock it’s like to the Moon so far ) + I very much doubt that the script and director will be able to offer the viewer an interesting character and present him competently as they did in Guardians.

Moussi - I have the strong impression that one of his relatives or close friends is trying to promote him in this way.

The director - in addition to what is confusing, it is also amusing that a new director for the film appeared literally “a day” before the start of fight rehearsals.

+ it seems to me that filming was forced to start quickly so as not to lose Batista as well. By the way, Batista wrote that he finished working on Kickboxer and went to star in James Bond. It is unknown whether he will return to filming or not.

    Author's gravatar

In fact...the only good news for the creators since the departure of Jha and Adkins (well, except that Batista did not leave the project). The new director is confusing + they hired him at the last second, somehow I trusted Fang more. I just think the Chinese could have brought more new and interesting things into the reboot, but Western directors know the original too well and in any case there will be some references, “tricks”, scenes to the original, but I wouldn’t want that, because It will be too parodic.

PS Place your bets, gentlemen! Will there be a dance of a drunken kickboxer in the film or not?

Kinopoisk writes: “You can step into the same river as much as you like when it comes to Hollywood.” Jean-Claude Van Damme returns to his roots in the new version of the thriller “Kickboxer”: the actor replaced his colleague Tony Jaa, who dropped out of project."

By the way, regarding “Never Give Up”. Despite the obvious niche nature of the film, it was shot very well. I’m not talking about fights, but in general, as a teenage motivational film and so on. The dramatic line with Khunsu was done very sanely.

I also liked the fights, considering the fact that the guys weren’t particularly skilled, they were well prepared. I bought a DVD at one time - there was a video about their training, the guys really prepared.

    Offtopic (but offtopic):

    Master Ken: 100 kicks... ;)

Let's get more Adkins! The kid is not getting any younger, he needs to make the most of his dreams!)

"Time Patrol" especially. Science fiction is trending now. If they did some kind of remake with Tom Cruise, it would definitely pay off))

Is it true that Adkins signed up for this too?

He hasn’t signed yet, but he was offered the role. Although the creators of Kickboxer are advertising with all their might that Scott, Ja, and Batista have signed contracts.

    go straight to video

The film is made for theatrical distribution, i.e. at least the distribution will be at the level of Raids will be 99%, and taking into account that the film is in English and the film is a remake of a cult (albeit niche) product, there should be more release + the cast is still good: Scott, Tony, St. Pierre and Batista has a decent fan base. And fans of the original will go, at least to shit themselves. =)

And I agree, if something comes out at the level of “Never Give Up 1”, it will be good (about the box office - the same thing, if it collects 30-40 million in the world, it will be cool), if not... then no one will be surprised. =) In principle, I don’t understand why remakes of such films as Bloodsport or Kickboxer are made NOW, when remakes of Double Impact or Time Patrol look much more profitable

Is it true that Adkins signed up for this too?
Idk, what to expect of course, I don’t want to be a pessimist
It seems like this director is okay, but here are the executive producers
They haven’t done a damn thing in their career - I already foresee
Negative reviews, straight to video...okay, let's see

In general, my intuition tells me that the remake will be crap. I watched all sorts of videos and showreels of Moussey... to be honest, no emotions. One of the next, quite cute, maybe just for such a movie.

Perhaps in the story he will not be an old man. Moreover, Tonga Po plays Batista, and ZhSP plays his brother.

Special forces seem to be planned in the remake of Bloodsport. =)

Phew, relieved. My soul became calmer. At least there are special forces somewhere, otherwise I was wondering if they were sick? =)

Special forces seem to be planned in the remake of Bloodsport. =)

    Author's gravatar

    It seems there is not

Kickboxer tells the story of David and Kurt Sloan, the descendants of a well-known Venice, Calif., fighting dynasty. When David wins the Karate World Championship, a promoter lures him to Hong Kong, despite his brother's protestations that the man is a crook. When Kurt travels to Thailand to meet his brother, he discovers he has died and seeks his revenge.

It is reported that Canadian Alain Moussi will star in the title role. Batista and St-Pierre are also in action. The plot is primitive to the point of disgrace - revenge for a murdered brother. :(

    Author's gravatar

Great news. I'm hoping for a comeo from Van Damme.
