Review of the action movie “Boy Kills World” (2024) by Eoin Friel

"Boy Kills World” stretches its limited plot a bit, but it still manages to be filled with some laugh-out-loud moments mixed with over-the-top violence and one of the best final fight scenes this year.

Plot

The film is about Boy, a deaf guy with a rich imagination. When his family is murdered, a mysterious shaman trains him to suppress his childhood imagination and become an instrument of death.

Review

Sometimes you come across films that seem so accurate to their story that they are difficult to review. This seems to be exactly the story the director wanted to tell; Whether everyone will like it is an open question.

"Boy against everyone” is perhaps the craziest action movie of the year; sometimes it's funny and sometimes it turns into a great gory show with overly violent fight scenes that look like they came to life from a cartoon or graphic novel.

At nearly two hours, the film starts to get a little tiresome as its plot is fairly simple and doesn't stretch beyond the 90-minute mark. It's a straightforward tale of revenge, with some interesting stylistic elements, and voice acting for the main character known as "The Kid" (Bill Skarsgard), provides much of the film's humor.

Skarsgård, seems to be in the best shape of his life, as he has clearly prepared for the role and looks incredibly muscular in this film. It does have quite a few fight scenes, however they are a bit shaky at times which was disappointing, I was hoping we had grown past that.

Yet he convincingly plays the role of the protagonist and you root for him throughout the film as he smashes, stabs, shoots and even uses a cheese grater against his enemies. This scene is definitely the highlight of the action for me, although the final fight is still impressive.

Nice to see that Yayan Ruhian (Reid) got such a significant role and I think it's his best Hollywood role to date. By the way, I'm still annoyed that The Force Awakens introduced him and Iko Uwais and then did absolutely nothing with them.

Any film featuring Andrew Koji worth watching as I think he's one of the most interesting action stars out there today; however, I wish he had more fight scenes as I feel he was underutilized. Sharlto Copley, as always, is entertaining, and this is the second major action movie he's been in this year, following “Monkeyman“, where he commands attention in every scene.

Generally, "Boy Kills World” sometimes turns into a fun bloodbath with inventive scenes and definitely a triple-digit body count. I can see this becoming a cult film in the future, with people coming to midnight screenings and applauding the chaos. It's definitely worth watching on the big screen for the full experience, but it's a little long for me.
