Review of the film Haywire with Gina Carano

As he tells it himself Steven Soderbergh, one night, after he was removed from the director's chair of one of the major feature films (it was "Moneyball"), he stayed up late and switched to the TV channel where they were showing the fight MMA. Never looking MMA-fighting, he was very impressed with the fighting skills of his opponents - especially the skills of the female fighter Gina Carano. And Soderbergh thought: why Angelina Jolie – the only actress considered an action star? This led to a series of events, including a meeting with Carano, the hiring of a screenwriter Lem Dobbs (The Limey, Dark City) and developing the project that eventually became "Haywire". The result is a very high-quality spy thriller, the release of which could very likely mark the beginning of a new action franchise with a woman in the leading role.

Carano, let's call her Jason Bourne in a skirt (without amnesia), plays a role Mallory Kane, ex-marine/trained killer/badass in every sense. The film begins in the middle of the story Kane. She's already on the run and doesn't know who to trust (hint: no one). But it becomes quite clear that behind the deception is her ex-lover/former employer, played by Ewan McGregor. One of her former colleagues (Channing Tatum, who has shown himself to be surprisingly capable) tries to grab her, but Kane manages to evade arrest and escape with a witness (Michael Angarano, not so impressive). This provides Soderbergh the opportunity for storytelling necessary to show previous events in the form of flashbacks.

Flashbacks take us to Barcelona and Dublin, where some pretty good action scenes take place. Some excellent elements resemble "Ronin", there's also a well-choreographed chase across rooftops. Exterior scenes lack the film's polish Frankenheimer and interesting camera work Estuary и Greengrasswho took part in the work on films about Borne. But this is where the script comes into play, and the combat, as well as the action, remains top-notch. In one of the best scenes of the film Michael Fassbender и Carano they trash the hotel room, causing a storm of applause from the audience at the end of the fight.

У Soderbergh became a habit of working with people who were not actors - the most famous was Sasha Grey в “Call girl” (Although Gray and spent a fair amount of time in front of the camera before that). A game Carano, compared with Gray, much “rawer”. While the film “Call Girl” was a super low-budget film close to realism, "Haywire" is a completely Hollywood film, and such shortcomings in the acting are more striking. The presence of veterans such as Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas и Bill Paxton. However, it is unlikely that anyone will be too concerned about her acting, since Soderbergh did a good job of highlighting her strengths. But next Kate Winslet no one will name her (or even the next Kate Hudson).

I wonder if this will start a career Carano as an action star, but what's even more interesting is whether this will be the start of new female-led action franchises that would provide an opportunity for rising stars to showcase their physical and fighting skills on screen. Obviously, this will largely depend on how well the box office does. "Haywire". Company "Relativity" is set to release the film on January 20th, and it's a very interesting time for an action film to be released. Earlier this year with “Green Hornet” tried to do something like this. The results were mixed. But if the audience “falls” for this trick, then most likely they will like what they “bought” for.

I'm really, really looking forward to this movie.
I didn’t expect an action thriller from Soderbergh and it’s all the more interesting to see what happened in the end.
And of course there are a lot of great actors...
