Summing up the results of action cinema 2019: nominations

Well... They say you've been waiting for this, so we solemnly announce: we are starting our fourth annual project to sum up the results of action films!

The FFI editors note that 2019 was not so fruitful for the hand-to-hand action genre, despite the fact that some long-term projects were released that were followed by fans of the genre and we, respectively. It’s a pity that some expected films never saw the light of day and it’s unclear when they will be seen. But, as they say, you need to work with what you have. We hope that with your help we will recruit excellent representatives in each action film category for 2019.

Summing up will take place in three stages:

Stage one. Proposal of nominees.

We provide an already “settled” list of nominations, in each of which visitors to our website and VK group will be able to offer one or more options. Preferably with an explanation of why this particular option was chosen.

Stage two. Vote.

By the end of 2019, when there are a maximum number of options in each category, voting will be launched on the site in several rounds. You can vote for your favorite option.

Stage three. Article analytics.

After receiving the voting results for all nominations, we will post analytical articles about the top three for each of them on the website fight-films.info. For us, this is a difficult, but at the same time interesting part of the project. We hope that your comments under these materials will not take long? :)

    1. Best film with BI.
"Fury" (Vietnam); "Vengeance" by Jesse Johnson and S. Adkins (I wanted to add "Avenger", but it's 2018).
    2. Blockbuster.
    Michael Bay's The Phantom Six.
    3. Best fight.
I join you: the fight on the train from “Fury” and John Wick against Rahman and Rukhyan.
    4. Best action movie.
John Wick 3 and The Shadow Six.
    5. Best Actor.
Ma Dong-seok (excellent form despite his age and excellent acting in "Gangster, Cop and Devil")
    6. Best Actress.
Veronica Ngo (killer mom from Furies)
    7. Disappointment.
    "Triple Threat"
    8. Best Asian.
    "Gangster, Cop, Devil"
    9. Independent film.
    "Cowboys" (Indonesia); "Maria" (Philippines)
    10. Series.
    "Warrior", "Timberland" and "The Witcher"
    11. Expected.
    "Collectors 2" with Adkins; "Swordsman" with Joe Taslim; "Jujutsu";

    1. The best BI.
Perhaps "Fury" and the South Korean "Avenger".
    2. Blockbuster.
    "Spider-Man: Far From Home."
    3. Best fight.
Fight on the train from Fury.
    4. Best action movie.
"John Wick 3" despite the fact that the plot has become completely idiotic.
    5. Best Actor.
Iko Uwais. Andrew Koji, unknown until this year, also made me happy.
    6. Best Actress.
    Veronica Ngo
    7. Disappointment.
Triple Threat and John Wick 3, of course.
    8. Best Asian.
"Gangster, Cop, Devil" from South Korea and "First Love" from Japan. "The Avenger" is cool, but it is a hand-to-hand film and has no place in this category.
    9. Historical or fantasy.
"Gangs of Hindostan" from Bollywood is an excellent, albeit drawn-out movie. From the fabulous wuxia - "Jade Dynasty" from China.
    10. Sports drama.
“Fighting with My Family” is about wrestling and “Chrysanthemum and the Guillotine” is about sumo wrestlers.
    11. Independent film.
"Night Shots" with Jean-Paul Lye and the Polish "Half a Century of Poetry After" The latter is not for the action (where it is rather weak), but for conveying the general atmosphere of the world of “The Witcher” by Andrzej Sapkowski.
    12. Short film.
I really liked Afro Samurai Champloo by Leroy Nguyen, Cleaning House by Shahaub Rudbari and The Division by Jean-Paul Lye. I also liked the Russian “Zone A”.
    13. Series.
The final season of Into the Desert of Death, Warrior with Andrew Koji, and the second season of Cobra Kai for its amazing ending.
    14. Comeback of the year.
Mark Dacascos in John Wick 3, Michelle Yeoh in Master Z, Karl Urban in The Boys and John Foo in The Outsider.
    15. Expected.
Indian "Commando", Chinese "Crossfire" and British "No Time to Die".

        Sergey Payusov,

A thriller, as in the case of Miike's First Love, but the rare action scenes are so deliciously presented that the film as a whole is perceived as an action film. If we talk about pure action, I would rather vote for “War” with Tiger Shroff and Hrithik Roshan. But there is so much of this action that you lose interest in the plot and atmosphere behind it.

          Danil Chupakhin,

Then you need to add “thriller” to this nomination. Otherwise, I only took action films into account when I made the selection.

        Sergey Payusov,

“Gangster, Cop and Devil” and “Roll into the Asphalt” can hardly be called action films, because there is more of a thriller, a crime drama than action, BUT it is there and presented in such a way that you do not expect it and it is very shocking, well, just ...they should be in the top 3, they're a must watch, it's not like they're the best of the year - they're the best of the decade. To roll into the asphalt for me personally “Pulp Fiction” of the 21st century, Tarantino no longer surprises as much as S. Craig Zahler

Some options are without explanation, because those speaking above have already said everything, I agree with them, I have nothing to add, and I see no point in repeating their words.
    Main:
    1.Film with B.I.:
    a) Avenger. I’ll just add that the final battle is the highlight of the whole film; I watched it with sincere pleasure.
    b) Triple threat. The film didn’t turn out the way it was expected, but I was prepared for the bad, maybe that’s why there was no negative feeling from watching it, and besides, the competition in this category this year is weak.
    2. Blockbuster:
John Wick 3. I’ll only add what I chose by elimination because other blockbusters place too much emphasis on fantasy, this is the topic of other sites and VK groups, not this one.
    3.Best fight:
    Avenger. Final fight.
    4.Best action movie:
John Wick 3; Revenge; 21 bridges.
    5.Best Actor:
    a) S. Adkins. He gave fans a new memorable character, and progress in the acting field was noticeable this year.
    b) K. Reeves. He was always a good actor and showed it again in the threequel.
    c) U. Zabka. I really sympathize with his character in Cobra Kai, I even find common character traits with him.
    6.Best Actress:
Holly Barry. For the demonstrated hard work and preparation for the role in John Wick 3 and impressive physical shape at a respectable age.
    7.Disappointment:
Those films that I expected did not disappoint, at least. Perhaps the very recent “The Phantom Six,” but this is a disappointment not so much in the film as in Michael Bay as a director. I would like to see pictures from him like his “Rock” or “Island”, and not the idiocy that he is doing now.
    Additional:
    1.Asian action movie:
    Avenger.
    2.Historical, fantasy, wuxia:
    Nothing to offer.
    3. Sports drama:
    nothing to offer.
    4.Independent film with B.I:
Perhaps an Avenger, if he qualifies for that category.
    5.Short film:
    Nothing to offer.
    6.Series:
Cobra Kai season 2. A very worthy continuation of the first season and further development of the story and characters arouses keen interest and the desire to “continue the banquet.” Its lamp-like quality and “old-school” quality are captivating.
    7. Comeback.
Mark Dacascos. For a long time he vegetated somewhere in oblivion. and when he came out, he showed that he was not yet “too old for this crap.”
    8. I don’t know what’s coming out next year, but I’m looking forward to “Legacy of Lies” and “The Capture” and “Ip Man 4” with Adkins; "Crossfire" with D. Ian; maybe "Vanguard" with Jackie, but I was confused by what was shown in the trailer. And the third season of Cobra Kai.

    MAIN NOMINATIONS:
    Martial arts movie 2019

    – “Master Z: The Legacy of Ip Man” (China-Hong Kong)
A good, emotional spin-off with well-choreographed hand-to-hand combat. Not without its shortcomings, but it really stuck with me.

    Blockbuster 2019
    – “Alita: Battle Angel” (USA-Canada-Argentina)
It's obvious that it's based on a manga. The heroine overcomes a difficult path, destroying opponents along the way and overcoming obstacles. I love these kinds of films.

    Best Screen Fight 2019
    – Alexander Kuznetsov vs Vitaly Khaev (“Dad, die”)
A dynamic and intense fight using improvised things like a hammer or a TV. It was nice to see this in a Russian film.
    - Will Smith, young Will Smith and Mary Elizabeth Winstead vs young Will Smith ("Gemen")
A dynamic final battle of three against one using firearms. It was great!
    - Keanu Reeves vs Yayan Ruhian and Chechep Arif Rahman ("John Wick 3")
    Best fight in the film.

    Best action movie 2019
    – “Triple Threat” (Thailand-China-USA)
A solid action movie with lots of different action scenes.
    – “Avanpost” (Russia)
For dynamic and intense shootout scenes.

    Best Action Film Actor 2019
    – Scott Adkins (“Kidnapping,” “Triple Threat,” “Vengeance”)
    – Michael Jai White (“The Hard Way”, “Asphalt”, “Triple Threat”, “Arrow”)

    Best Action Film Actress 2019
    – Veronica Ngo (“Fury”)

    Disappointment of the year
    – Code 8 (Canada)
The short was solid and gave room for space and scale. But the full-length film, in terms of the script, turned out to be an ordinary, formulaic action movie. In which there are superpowers and robot policemen, but the action scenes with them were unsightly. It was a good idea, but it wasn't implemented.

    SECONDARY NOMINATIONS:
    Asian Action 2019

    – “First Love” (Japan)
I love Takashi Miike's films, and at the end of the film, the charismatic characters deal with each other in various ways.

Historical, fantasy or wuxia film 2019

    – “Kingdom” (Japan)
An interesting adventure of heroes against the background of China of the 3rd century BC. e. With battle scenes and Taka Sakaguchi as the final boss.

    Martial Arts Short Film 2019
    – "IP MAN - THE INTERCEPTING FIST"
I love the short films from MartialClub. This work was no exception.

    Action series 2019
    – TV series “Arrow” (season 7)
The first episodes in prison were especially good. And the action in the series, as always, is good.
    – TV series “Supergirl” (season 4)
Unexpectedly, I found myself completely delighted with the fourth season. Plus there are a variety of fights using various superpowers.

    Comeback of the Year
    – Mark Dacascos (John Wick 3, Wu Assassins TV series)
It was nice to see good old Dacascos in well-choreographed fights.

2020's most anticipated film of the year
    - "Crossfire"
I really hope that Benny Chan will not let you down and will make an action movie like in his best years. And also starring Donnie Yen and Nicholas Tse.

Hello everyone! The biggest revelation in the field of martial arts action is Mark Dacascos. An actor whose career was almost destroyed by chance ends up in the best action franchise of the decade, while eclipsing the entire cast with his performance. That's why almost every nomination goes to him.

Martial arts movie 2019 — John Wick 3

Best Screen Fight 2019 — Keanu Reeves vs Mark Dacascos (John Wick 3), Mark Dacascos vs King Bowler's men (Fishburne)

Best Action Film Actor 2019 — Mark Dacascos

Best Action Film Actress 2019 — Halle Berry, Celina Jade (exclusively for beauty)

    Blockbuster 2019 — John Wick 3

Best action movie 2019 — John Wick 3, Rambo. Last Blood

Disappointment of the year — Triple Threat, Hobbs and Shaw

    Asian Action 2019 —

Action series 2019 - Wu Assassins

Comeback of the Year - Mark Dacascos (John Wick 3)

2020's most anticipated film of the year - Ip Man 4

    Hello, everybody!
Martial arts film 2019 – “Triple Threat” – was probably the most anticipated film of the year for many martial arts fans. This work did not become a masterpiece in its genre, but I give my vote for the “threat”. There are several reasons:
    a) a strong cast of different athletes, real masters of eastern and “non-eastern” martial arts.
    b) decent hand-to-hand combat throughout the film.
    c) the absence of cables and high jumps, flights, and tossing, which is the fault of modern Chinese combat cinematography.
    d) it was nice to see the technique and movements of the Chinese Tiger Chen and the Thai Tony Jaa.
The first one was remembered from the film “Master of Tai Chi”, where he had a parted hairstyle, which is not so shorter))) The second one pleased me after “Xxx World Domination”, where he was simply dumped and made into a clown jester (((
    d) Triple Threat will look better as time goes on, like Civil War with Jet Li.
    Something like this…

Blockbuster 2019 – “Avengers Endgame” – I’m not a fan of comic films, but the film as a conclusion turned out to be epic and high-quality.

Best On-Screen Fight of 2019 – Final Fight in Triple Threat

Best action movie 2019 - Balkan Frontier - just a good Russian action movie, especially based on real events. A film that is not ashamed of - normal acting, decent pyro effects, the soundtrack contains the song Fog from the work of the group Sektor Gaza. Pass!

Best Action Film Actor 2019 – Scott Adkins – Yuri Boyka is our everything)))

Best Action Film Actress 2019 – I don’t even know who to write, Veronica Ngo from Furia did not catch my attention either with her skill or her acting. Jaanin Vismitananda's "Jija" script in Triple Threat went downhill quickly, to my disappointment. The Korean actress in the red dress, Lee Si-young, from the Korean film “Sister” would be suitable for this nomination, but I have not seen this film. So I put a dash)))

Disappointment of the year - “John Wick 3” - I expected this film no less than “Triple Threat”, but the final result left an unpleasant impression, or something. Yes, expensive, spectacular, high quality. However, there are obvious shortcomings:
    a) again a lot of shooting and the death of numerous extras
    b) Wick has become the undying Rambo - the enemies are dying))) and our John manages without losses))) they shot him a little, and okay... Like in the Soviet cartoon “And so it will do”...
    c) repetition of the plot moves of John Wick 2 - again promissory notes, various blood obligations that may not be observed, it turns out)))
    d) intertwining Belarusian nationality with Wick))) Laughter and nothing more)))
    e) Mark Dacascos does not look like an ominous final boss, but on the contrary, like a caricatured Asian villain + accent in the Russian dub. Doesn't inspire...
Compare his bald image with the image in "From Cradle to Grave" - where he was impressive with his appearance and manner of speaking.

Asian action movie 2019 - “Master Z Legacy of Ip Man” - a film with a “C”, the Wing Chun style was shown, Batista took part in the fight. Average! I don’t remember any other Asian films in this category, so I’m nominating the above product.

Historical, fantasy or wuxia film 2019 - Russian film "Brotherhood" - I give credit for the fight between a Soviet officer and a Soviet special forces soldier in an Afghan dukan! The fight choreography is fine, and the cameraman did not disappoint.

Sports drama 2019 – Creed 2 – due to the lack of other films in this genre, or because I did not watch this other movie, I directed “Creed 2”. However, the film turned out to be weak and unnecessary...

Independent martial arts film 2019 - ? didn't watch anything

Martial Arts Action Short Film 2019 - ? didn't watch anything

Action series 2019 – “Warrior” – I approve of the series based on Bruce Lee’s drafts! I'm looking forward to the second season!

Comeback of the year – Indonesians Yayan Ruhyan and Chechep Rahman from “Raids”, who gave Keanu Reeves trouble in “John Wick 3”.

The most anticipated film of 2020 is “Ip Man” 4 with Donnie Yen and Scott Adkins + Korean “Sister” with Lee Shi-young.
I’m looking forward to “Sister,” anticipating something like “Taken” with Liam Neeson, or the Korean “Man from Nowhere.”

ps “Vengeance”, “Hobbs and Shaw”, “Rambo Last Blood”, “Alita Battle Angel” - I didn’t watch it, so I didn’t include them anywhere!

      Author's gravatar

      Vladimir Egorov,
I apologize, “sister” has been hanging on torrents for a long time, the translation seems to be from “Koloboks”. there is no need to wait for “Hostage” there - she simply isn’t there.
