In one of the interviews Donnie Yen interpreted his role in “Legend of Chen Zhen” as an improved version of Chen Zhen Bruce Lee:
My Chen Zhen will follow in the footsteps of Bruce Lee and will be endowed with his feelings and manners. I hope to do him justice. At the same time, I added my own ideals and fighting styles. One could say that this is Bruce Lee's Chen Zhen, taken to a new level and presented in a completely new way.
In “The Legend of Chen Zhen,” I was the production director because I was more familiar with how Bruce Lee fought. Moreover, I personally cannot be indifferent to Bruce. Filming fights is not an easy task, and I don't want to do it, but when most producers find me, they all want me to be a production director in addition to acting.
There are only two or three truly decent fight choreographers on the market today, but they are all very busy. And for me, who is prone to innovation, striving for bold and new ideas, it is even more difficult for me to find the right person. When you have to additionally film fights, this is a double load, for which the pay is not very high, usually much less than for acting, but for the sake of saving the film, I take on this kind of work.
