Tony Jaa. Interview for Asian Movie Pulse website

When you started practicing martial arts as a child, did you always want to become an on-screen fighter, or was it just to keep fit?

Tony Jaa: Actually, neither. I grew up in a small village in Surin, northeast Thailand. My parents took care of elephants, which I often rode on. We didn't have television. I watched martial arts films in the village cinema and at the local temple. Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan were so cool that I wanted to be like them.

What types of martial arts have you done?

Tony Jaa: Studied Muay Boran, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Wushu, Kung Fu, Fencing and Judo.

Is culture an integral part of your work for you? I mean, do you strive to tell the world about Thai culture and lifestyle through films? (Rick Somchai)

Tony Jaa: I'm very glad you asked this question. Absolutely yes. I am very proud of my country and I want others to know who we are and what we represent.

What was it like working in the new Fast and the Furious? Will you continue to act in Hollywood films? (Anthony Hickman)

Tony Jaa: Just fantastic. Everyone was very, very kind to me. I really liked it too. Of course, I will continue to act in Hollywood/international films.

I heard you signed a contract to star in “SPL 2” with Sammo Hung and Jackie Wu. How did this happen?

Tony Jaa: I was invited to act. My manager and I liked the plot and the very idea of doing at least something for the growing and growing Chinese market.

Have you ever wanted to switch directions and star in a kung fu movie with actors like Sammo Hung or Jackie Chan? (Kevin Lewis)

Tony Jaa: Maybe. I have no problems with style. For me, the main thing is that the film has a high-quality plot, and that my character has personality. Many films made in Thailand, and indeed in the rest of Asia, focus only on action, and forget about the plot and characters. I have always liked action and will continue to like it, but I think that a movie would be much more interesting with a believable plot and characters that would not leave the audience indifferent.

If you had the chance to star with any kung fu stars past or present, who would you choose and why?

Tony Jaa: Wow, very difficult question. You already know that I'm a big fan of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. However, there are many other great fighters. I recently filmed a movie with my good friend Michael Jai White. It was something. Scott Adkins is great and he's a friend of mine too. Let's see what the future has in store for us.

Have you ever wanted to star in a Muay Thai movie and have Jean-Claude Van Damme play your teacher? He showed himself well in Kickboxer.

Tony Jaa: We are friends with Jean-Claude. He's too good to play the role of some teacher with a protégé; he's great at acting himself now. So, one day we might have something together.

What projects do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

Tony Jaa: I recently finished filming Slave Trade and will be returning to the set of Fast 2 in June to finish additional scenes. I’ll start filming “SPL XNUMX” in May, I’m looking forward to it. At the end of this month I have a series of meetings planned in Hollywood with several film studios, we will discuss some projects, but I can’t talk about it yet. I think the next few years of work will be up to my neck, but I’m happy about that.

Do you have a “dream role”? Who would you like to play?

Tony Jaa: I haven't told anyone this before, but I have this character I created - a superhero from another planet, partially tied to Hanuman. He can't get out of my head. I'm not preparing a project for the near future, but I think it will be interesting.

What would you like to wish to the readers of Asian Movie Pulse and your fans around the world?

Tony Jaa: You can't even imagine how honored I am to have interest in me on Asian Movie Pulse and other sites. This is very kind of you and those who follow my work. Thank you all very much!

Skip PULL 2??? However! Although... people are lucky! Everyone has already looked, and you are opening this world. Maybe not always perfect, but still.
    Enjoy your viewing!

    - I’m sure it will still give GOOD ACTION! He should go to Donny!!!...or Jacobas.

How can you miss a movie? Yes, it’s very easy - you need to start a family, children, work so that you have enough for everything and try to have time to do at least everything important. ;)

PS Dmitry, why on you? You and I met Jackie back in 2000, remember Zhenya? )

I agree with Alexander: Tony, give us normal action and we will be happy!

...by the way, about the heroes of our time. Today I came across the trailer of a new, extreme movie - CITY GAMES, coming out to the world in May of this year.
In my opinion, it’s very good in terms of shooting and the dynamics of modern cinema.

Evans denied rumors about Tony in "The Raid 3":

Someone just posted something on imdb.com. I have deep respect for Tony Jaa, but I don't even have a draft script for The Raid 3 yet, and won't for the next few years.

After TYUG2 I actually buried Tony for myself

There's no need to bury Tony. What if he ends up in Raid 3? And it’s not necessary at all, it will be boring.

So why does it disappear? The role in "SPL 2" promises a lot of interesting things. I perceive “Fast and the Furious” as one-time films and I don’t expect anything like that from Tony, but it will be interesting to see how it will look in an American film. :)
