Scott Adkins talks about Tony Jaa, Jackie Woo, the action movie Undisputed 4, piracy and his own project

Ninja 2 was filmed in Thailand, where you previously filmed Black Mask 2 and Medallion. How does it feel to return to Thailand, this time as a leading man? How was it working with the Thai film crew? Do you like Thai action films yourself?

Scott Adkins: ...I started my career in China and Thailand, and it's nice to be back in both places after ten years, it brings back a lot of memories. I like Thailand, the Thais are very humble and hardworking, it’s a pleasure to film there. Obviously, I'm a Tony Jaa fan. Isaac and I once had the pleasure of having dinner with Prachya Pinkay and Panna Rittikrai, and hearing their stories was fantastic. I'm looking forward to meeting Tony Jaa soon, as we have been discussing our film together, which I would be very happy to agree to. There is one big advantage to filming in the Far East, it’s hot... you don’t have to warm up, you don’t lose flexibility. In Green Street I fought in -10°, so it was a nice change of scenery.

In the summer, after the premiere, “Ninja 2” received extremely favorable reviews. Doesn't it upset you that films like this rarely get to show up before audiences? Don't you think this has a negative impact on the audience's reaction?

Scott Adkins: When a film like this starts making its way through film festivals, it's great. But I don't think watching it at home will spoil your experience... the main problem is piracy, and I would really like to hope that people enjoy films of this genre. To be honest, we don't earn that much anymore. I hope people will support Ninja 2 by buying it on any platform when they get the chance, because it's getting harder and harder to find the finance to make movies like this because they don't make any money. If you want to see Undisputed 4, then be sure to support Ninja 2.

Do you think many people don't realize how much of an impact piracy has on these films?

Scott Adkins: In my opinion, people think we're all millionaires, and by downloading for free, they for some reason imagine the image of some snob from Hollywood, but the truth is that the snob is not affected at all, he The money will continue to be raked in while hard-working actors, crew members and their families around the world suffer, and ultimately we'll be left with a glut of summer superhero blockbusters. There won't be much to choose from since we won't see a single independent film on the list. There will only be remakes, superhero films and horror films left.

... in "War of the Wolves" you again worked with the Hong Kong film crew, fighting on screen with Jackie Wu, the film's director.

Scott Adkins: Jackie Woo is one of the best movie fighters, this film is the fruit of his labor, he has been doing it for a long time. It makes me happy to work alongside someone I have great respect for as a martial arts practitioner and as a person. I am again in the role of a villain, but I hope that the Chinese will forgive me for the character I played, since he was rather dismissive of the Chinese people and their ability to wage war in modern conditions. I'll be going head-to-head against Jackie Wu in the finals, so don't miss it!!

There was talk about the next film in the “Undisputed” series, in which you will again appear on the screen in the role of Yuri Boyk, the most accomplished fighter in the world. Any thoughts on what the plot of this film should be? Why do you think people liked Boyka? When you first played this role, did you imagine that in the future the name “Scott Adkins” would be associated mainly with the image of Boyka?

Scott Adkins: David White is currently writing the script and we're trying to come to a consensus on the direction of the film. I'm very protective of the character, the fans really love him, that's a fact, so I want him to move in the right direction. I think the character has attracted audiences so much that we can make many more films about him, but in this next part, we need to present him properly. We all want the result to live up to our expectations! In my opinion, the reason Boyka is so popular is that we all sometimes want to be like him, a guy who won’t let anyone mix him up with crap. But he also has a strong sense of honor, and he was never a villain in the truest sense of the word, which is why we had the opportunity to make him the main character of the third part. Boyka is a natural alpha male who would rather punch a man than tell him to calm down, this is not the cliched hero you are used to. I think it is precisely for this reason that his image appeals to people so much; don’t put a finger in his mouth. He's like Wolverine, only in martial arts films, and if I have the opportunity to present him the way I would like to see him, then this character will not disappear from the screens.

Will we ever see a film directed by Scot Adkins? Would this interest you? And if so, what would the ideal “Scott Adkins movie” look like?

Scott Adkins: Definitely... I can clearly see myself trying myself in this direction in the future, but I would need decent support from others. I have one project, I’ve been developing it for some time, I’ve wanted to make something like this since I was 14 years old... however, I don’t think that I’ll be the one directing it... even though it’s certainly a “Scott Adkins film”, my creation, but to be the director and playing the lead role means taking on a huge commitment.

Offtopic: Scott with Bill Wallace, one of the most famous and talented people in the history of BI (photo from the induction ceremony into the “Hall of Fame” of the Martial Arts Illustrated magazine).

Michael Jai White is just perfect for the role of the new Blade...

I would love to see a sequel to Spawn.

    "He didn't grow up here..."
Alex, but he won’t grow up. There are these guys, one is called Daniel Barnhart, the other is Michael Jai White. So how have they grown? Now they are remembered as “cool artists, it’s a pity that they were never able to become world famous.” I wouldn’t want Scott to be remembered in the same way in 10 years, but the facts suggest that he’s already almost there, in the same category. Sad, but true.

“Well, he doesn’t need Hollywood and fame, he has a level above average, and there’s nothing more he could wish for!”
In some ways you are probably right. It is human nature to calm down after reaching a certain level.
Yesterday I watched his second “Ninja”... For all the enchantment of the fights (really, compared to the last films - very good!) - as a fighter (it seemed) he was slightly inferior in speed to Kosugi and Tim Manu))). And how the actor lost to his own Boyko... He didn’t grow up here...

This has nothing to do with Scott at all. Just “going to auditions for big films and getting a role” is a little more difficult than many might think.

Don’t you think that he simply doesn’t need it! It is not him who is being limited, but himself! Well, he doesn’t need Hollywood and fame, he has a level above average, and there’s nothing more he could wish for! If he wanted to become the second Van Damme, he did. It’s not difficult to look through his filmography and understand what he wants. Probably, if I wanted to, I would go to more castings for big films like Tselnomerodin. I understand that I’ve brought up a sad topic, but maybe it’s sad for us, but it’s fine for him anyway.

Scott is one of those actors who, like air, needs a good director. Without it, they are only capable of banal earning money for a living.
Unfortunately, the ability to stage a fight beautifully is not all that is needed for a commercially successful film.
Today it is EASIER for Downey Jr., Tom Hardy, Christian Bale or, say, Tom Cruise to teach the basics of Krav Maga, MMA or Wing Chun than to invest in the acting component of Adkins, Alexandrou or one of the talented young stuntmen.
Although of course it's a pity...

Uran, well, buy Ninja on Amazon - register there, read the instructions, put money on your Visa/Masrecard (if not, create one) and pay. The very fact of support is important. You care, right? So what is the problem. And eradicate the thought in the spirit of “Well, if only they showed it in a movie, then I’ll go and download it.” Scott personally wrote "If you want a movie, pay." It’s clear that we have freeloaders and piracy will continue for a long time.
For example, I was curious to read what he thought about Boyka and liked his comparison with Wolverine. And considering that so far it doesn’t have a big hit, except for Boyka, I don’t mind buying Ninja 2 to find out in what direction the threequel (or whatever you call it :) after all, the third part, the first without it).
And then they’ll whine, “It’s a cheap movie...”
PS In general, it’s funny that Ninja was bought more than Undisputed.

Big films, big films... Let's be honest, Scott is still not a boy anymore... and by nature he is a modest, hard-working family man who needs to provide for his family, pay bills every day, and not naively dream about illusory chances of achieving something something significant in Hollywood. So you have to grab onto all sorts of Tombs of the Dragons, Wars of the Wolves, Hooligans 3, where they won’t hurt you with money (+ they will treat you, compared to the rest of the actors, as a star). Rather than, armed with a portfolio with unnoticeable roles in Bourne, Wolverine and Zero Dark Thirty, wander around the castings of Hollywood super hits and hope for the same unnoticeable roles, for which a fee of 100 bucks and a package of Rollton will be for happiness.

It’s bad that they don’t have it, it’s very bad. Therefore, let them not issue appeals on piracy, but communicate with their producers.

    =D
Reminds me of comments in the style of “Scott is a fool, he acts in DTV films when he needs to move on to big films” =)

Pass and reassign to Scott Adkins. If he organized a normal distribution of Undisputed and other action films in cinemas in Russia and the CIS, then downloads would decrease

I'll try to explain one thing...Scott and Isaac HAVE NOTHING to do with the rental of their films. It is not within their competence and ability to organize the distribution of Ninja or Undisputed in cinemas in a particular country.

With the same success, you can contact any of us - “if you want them not to download, arrange a rental” =)

Pass and reassign to Scott Adkins. If he had organized a normal distribution of Undisputed and other action films in cinemas in Russia and the CIS, then downloads would have decreased - Undisputed is a normal “boyish” action movie, and people would have flocked to it with good advertising. We download because there is no rental.

"I wonder what Tony thinks of Scott."

On his Facebook, Tony (or rather the one who talks there on his behalf) said that Scott is a great guy and he would like to act with him, but not against each other, but at the same time.

I also like John Foo. And guys like Shahvali and Millans will remain at the level of Gary Daniels, which is a pity.

In any case, I think the unification of these three is inevitable. Because they are not full of egos like Sly, Arnie, Steven and Jean-Claude were back in the day. They don't care about that kind of crap.

I wonder what Tony thinks about Scott. And I wonder if Tony knows about Iko Uwais.

These three guys from the new rising guys are my favorites at the moment. I would really like to see the three of them in one film. Under the direction of Gareth Evans. By the way, has anyone read Gareth Evans' interview where he said that he would really like to work with Scott?

    Author's gravatar

Yeah, Scott was very intrigued by the words about Tony...

    Scott Adkins is awesome!!
And the film with Tony Jaa will have to beat Ninja 2

Scott Adkins and Tony Jaa in one film, this is good news.
