Screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen Talks District B13 and Bloodsport Remakes

Are you writing the new film Brick Mansions with David Bell?

Robert Mark Kamen: ...I wrote the script for the English version of District 13. Brick Mansions is District B13. I call it "Brick Mansions". It was supposed that we would start filming it, but something happened that I didn’t understand. Perhaps we couldn't find a distributor or something else. The pre-production goes on seemingly forever, and I don't know if it will be filmed or not. Negotiations were held with the actor, a director was found, but I don’t understand what happened. Usually I learned such information from him (the director), and this suited me very much...

Van Damme said that in the new “Bloodsport” he wanted to play a coach, but the producers were not interested in this. What is your opinion? Wouldn't it be cool if Van Damme starred in the new Bloodsport?

Robert Mark Kamen: This film is similar to the original only in its title. It has nothing in common with any kumite competition. He is not related to Frank Dukes. If the title were different, you wouldn't associate both of these films together. There is no point in using JCVD, because then the logic will be lost, since the plot has nothing in common with the first film. Any such change [to the script] risks confusion.

Do you write it into the script when you need to do the “pinwheel” with the splits, or do you let the actor decide for himself when to do it?

Robert Mark Kamen: No spinning splits. This is a politically motivated film with a strong focus on characters. As I said, there will be no splits, pitching or duels between warring opponents. If it weren't for the copyright on the title, there would be two completely different films.

I don’t understand, if they don’t want to have anything to do with the original, then why a common name? They would have made a completely different film.

Well, they’re making another film, but they appropriated the title for the hype, otherwise no one would even pay attention to their upcoming mess...

More precisely, I understand, for the sake of popularity.

It's a pity that they don't take Vandamych. He could still show a lot of things (and wave his arms and legs and even “play”)

yes, of course they could =/ they don’t want to have anything in common with the original, except the name of course... if it were the other way around, I’m sure they would have taken it

And I consider the remakes of films that came out not so long ago to be completely nonsense!!! IMHO
