Review of the film "Skin Trade" by Lee Golden

Short description:

New Jersey detective Nick Cassidy (Dolph Lundgren) heads to Bangkok, where he teams up with Thai detective, Tony Vitayakui (Tony Jaa) to track down Victor Dragovich (Ron Perlman) and take down his human trafficking ring. By mistake, Nick kills Dragovich's son during a sting operation on the New Jersey docks. Dragovich decides to take revenge by killing the detective and his family. But Dolph Lundgren's hero miraculously survives the brutal attack, having lost his wife and daughter. Seeing no purpose in life other than revenge, Nick and Tony will make their way through the Bangkokok underground world in search of the elusive Dragovich. Meanwhile, an FBI agent, Eddie Reed (Michael Jai White), visits Nick's house. Caught in the crossfire, the detective must decide who his true allies are.

Overview:

Twelve years after the release of Ong Bak in 2003, Tony Jaa, finally achieved recognition as an action film actor, working his way through the ranks of his career.
Currently, he has found himself among a wide range of people and opportunities, to which, in part, he was led by none other than  Dolph Lundgren, giving the opportunity to take part in the director’s action-packed crime thriller Ekachaya Uekrongtama, "The slave trade" (Skin Trade), with a strong cast and a strong script, which will not let you get bored for a moment.

Lundgren и Jaa The film stars detectives Nick Cassidy and Tony Vitayakui as they unknowingly hunt Viktor Dragovich, an international Serbian crime boss whose family controls several slave markets. Who will protect them? But in the end, Dragovich is caught and detained by the police, although legal delays do not make it possible to immediately arrest him, giving him time to take revenge...

Cassidy is ambushed and the only survivor of an attack on his home, becoming a heavily armed outcast with the sole purpose of finding Dragovich. Eventually, Nick's own investigation leads him to Thailand, where he crosses paths with Tony and his team. Things escalate when Tony begins chasing Cassidy through the streets and alleys of Bangkok. Mutual ignorance is the reason for their rivalry, but in the end they will find common ground to put an end to Dragovich's activities.

Lundgren Spent seven years developing the script for the film before it went into production, which finally began in late 2013. Screenwriters Gabriel Dowrick и Stephen Elder also had a hand in processing the script to make the film Lundgren a significant milestone in action cinema, inviting him to the cast Tony Jaa и Michael Jai White.

The bright characters in the film were, in particular, Peter Weller and Cary Tagawa, as well as actress Tasya Teles and actor Mike Dopud, who showed the maximum in their screen time, and of course  Ron Perlman, whose charisma as the main villain in the film is very organic. More to the point, the film looks like an interesting experiment in collaboration Lundgren и Jaa. They work great together. What is also important, in the scenes Jaa с Selina Jade (Jade) as his girlfriend, Min, we finally get to see Tony's defined muscles. This approach will be used in the first act of the film, but in the second and third, thanks to working with Lundgren и White у Jaa there is a chance to “show yourself” as an actor, giving the prospect of career growth in the Western film market. Concerning Lundgren, then he “wagged his legs” at the camera for quite a long time, becoming a master of his craft. Lundgren - a “venerable actor” who knows how to make a picture exciting...

У Jaa, there will also be several purely “acting” scenes in the second half of the film, in particular with Jade  и Perlman. In the end, despite the almost episodic debut in “Fast and Furious 7,” “The slave trade"gave Tony a chance to stand out more than he had previously, turning the picture into - "Jaa Show" Both fights of the Thai actor with Lundgren и White - a solid five, although fans will undoubtedly get much more pleasure from a battle of equals - Jaa/White. The staging of the fights was done perfectly, the choreography and execution are beyond criticism, being a real treat for fans of action films.

«The slave trade" - my first review of works Ekachaya Uekrongtama, because I haven’t watched either “beautiful boxer» (2004), "Pleasure Factory» (2007) neither «The Coffin» (2008). The script reveals key plot points earlier than we would like, turning the plot on its head... In addition, Uekrongtama I can feel the style in the selection of famous and talented actors who have already left their mark on the history of action films for many years to come, and at that time I have hopes that “The slave trade"maybe this will be the beginning of fruitful cooperation Lundgren, Jaa и White. And I’m sure that their fans would be all for it!

Magnet Releasing will release "Slave trade"in the US on digital and in theaters on April 23 and May 8, respectively.

"...For example, I always keep my weight within 70, the level of subcutaneous fat is also in a small percentage, and it is most convenient for me to move in this weight category. ... But Tony stepped away from the regime for a long time and gained weight..."
Excuse me - I misunderstood you).

      Alex,

Where's the first half of the comment? The phrase about my weight refers to the beginning of the comment, and specifically as an example of the degree of comfort.
When you take it out of context and look between the lines for something that is not contained in the lines, the result is confusion.

It made me smile when respected critics compared my “native” self to Tony, Bruce, etc. )))
Of course, some have better muscles, some even have better punch (hard to believe, but let it be...) than Tony Jaa.
But they watch films with him, not...

      Alex,

No one here compared themselves to either Jaa or Lee. This is nothing more than a figment of your imagination.

So "Skin Trade" will be in the cinema then? Someone answer, guys. Should we expect this film in the cinema in Russia?

      Author's gravatar

      Vladimir,

Most likely no. The premieres are scheduled until June 15 and Russia is not among them. On April 23, the film will be shown on the Internet (USA), so pirates will reach us much earlier than any other formats.))

    The review is watery.
And these are “Tony’s sculpted muscles” in the photo? Oh well...

      Ravenside,
I also smiled about the muscles.) It’s especially funny from the perspective of a person working out in the gym.
As for the water, I understood the main thing - the author liked the fights there.)

It said there - in comparison with previous films (I don’t know which ones he compared with, except maybe with TYUG2), I just missed this remark.

          MaximKa,

Even if in comparison with TYUG 2. The shape of the current Tony is very so-so.

            Ravenside,

Maybe it’s just an extremely unfortunate shot.) Although....he didn’t have much muscle even at his peak, he was just leaner.

I would, of course, give him up to 10 kilograms....)

              barsug,
Well, no, there were still muscles)
10 kilograms of dry mass is good, but perhaps this is not his weight. The degree of comfort is very important. For example, I always keep my weight within 70, the level of subcutaneous fat is also a small percentage, and it is most convenient for me to move in this weight category. And so do many. But Tony stepped away from the regime for a long time and gained weight. And he began to move noticeably harder. And Michael Jai White gained meat, but also began to move noticeably harder.

                Ravenside,

Here, of course, to each his own. My 90 is not enough for me.)) If we talk purely about the muscles, then they do not hinder movement, especially if they are functional. Look, Bruce Lee, with about the same height, was +\- 10 kg heavier than Jaa, and he looked gorgeous and it didn’t stop him from moving. Basically, whatever you say, a movie star should look presentable. By the way, Scott Adkins is an even better example.
If we talk about Tony, judging by this shot, then yes... here you either need to get water, or at least drain the water.

                  barsug,

Bruce Lee weighs 64 kg. Jaa now clearly weighs at least 10 kg more. Or maybe, I think, he even weighs somewhere around 80. Of course, large muscle mass does not mean clumsiness. Not at all. It’s just that someone is comfortable and comfortable in a certain form. Remember Roy Jones Jr., who moved to a heavier weight category and it was obvious to him that he did it in vain. It wasn't his weight.

Well, I don’t know... maybe my eye is acting up, but as for me, Tony here weighs no more than 65 kg. :-R
I hope it will be possible to find reliable information about this somewhere.

As for Bruce Lee, at his peak his weight was 72 kg, if I’m not mistaken. But it is also necessary to take into account that he had practically no fat; any other person with the same build would have been even heavier.

                      barsug,

and I just kept seeing that he had 64 at his peak. Although what is considered a peak... 64 is most likely the weight during the filming of “Dragon Island”. Lee is there after a long illness (due to a back injury) and is as thin as the devil himself.
