Biography

"Sammo" is translated from Chinese as "three hairs". He received the name Sammo at birth because he had a few hairs on his head.

As a child, Hungg was raised by his grandparents as his parents were constantly busy working in the Hong Kong film industry. Since childhood, Sammo dreamed of becoming an artist, and therefore his grandfather, seeing his grandson’s aspirations, sent him to the Beijing Opera School. And thus Sammo began training at the Beijing Opera School of teacher Yu-Jim-Yuen. It was there that Sammo met his best friends for life - Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao. At school, all students were given different names and he received the name Yuen Lung. Training there was very difficult. Students were forced to get up at five in the morning and begin training, which lasted until the evening. If students did something wrong or disobeyed, the teacher could punish them by beating them.

However, people like Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Corey Yuen and others came from this school. At school, the most gifted students were selected into a group of “seven lucky ones.” Due to the fact that Sammo started training at the Academy earlier than the other members of the group, he became the "Big Brother" to all the younger students. Feeling power over the younger students, Sammo often allowed himself to bully them. Many testified (especially Jackie Chan) that in his youth Sammo was a real tyrant and bully.

Sammo Hung's acting career began in 1961 when he starred in the film Education Of Love. After that, he starred in many children's minor and episodic roles. Once Sammo received a serious injury and had to give up training for a long time. During this period of time, he gained a lot of weight and soon the teacher told him that because of his weight, he would no longer be able to perform on stage. And after this, Sammo decides to leave the Academy, deciding to try his luck in the film business. Before he left, he told his brothers that the time of the Opera Academy had come to an end and he decided to break into the film industry. And if they ever leave the Academy, he will help them get a job at a film studio.

After leaving the Academy, Sammo actively worked as an actor, stuntman and assistant fight director. Soon after gaining a lot of experience, he began directing fight scenes for films himself. Sammo first took on action choreography duties in 1969's Golden Sword. During those years, he first gained fame when he played Bruce Lee's sparring partner in the film Enter the Dragon. After that, they staged “Game of Death” together. After the death of Bruce Lee, there was a sharp decline in martial arts films. But fortunately, by the end of the 70s, Beijing Opera and Comedy extended a helping hand. A new genre of comedy kung fu has emerged. A big impetus for the genre then came from Jackie Chan’s films “The Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow” and “The Drunken Master.” And Sammo Hung's career blossomed at that time.

Sammo Hung's directorial debut was in the 1977 film The Monk with the Iron Fists. This film was completely different from all previous films of Sammo Hung.
And already in this film one could see the emergence of Sammo Hung’s signature style, which made his name. This was followed by such successful films as “Two-Man Wars”, “The Odd Couple”, “Fight”, “The Sacrifice”, “The Magnificent Butcher”, “Encounters with Ghosts”.

In 1983, quite unexpectedly, three brothers - Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao - teamed up to produce a number of successful films, such as “Project A”, “Winners and Sinners”, “Snack on Wheels”, “My Lucky Stars”, “My lucky stars 2", "Dragon Heart", "Dragons Forever". Unfortunately, Dragons Forever was the last film where we saw the three brothers together. Subsequently, Sammo continued to work as an actor, director, screenwriter, producer and fight scene director. Having released such films as "Millionaire's Express", "Eastern Condors", "Rickshaw" and others. "Rickshaw" was recognized as one of the best films of the genre. By the mid-90s, Sammo and Jackie began working together again. Sammo was the fight director for Jackie Chan's "Struck by Lightning" and in 1997 he directed "Mr. Cool." Sammo also directed and choreographed the fight scenes in Jet Li's Once Upon a Time in China and America. In 1998, Sammo moved to the USA to work on the series "Martial Law". Unfortunately, the series lasted only two years on screen. Largely due to the unsuccessful script of the second season and the change of cast.

Sammo Hung currently lives in Hong Kong. He actively acts in films and works as a director of fight scenes. Without a doubt, Sammo Hung is one of the most influential figures in Hong Kong cinema. More than 170 works, where Sammo is known as an actor, director, screenwriter, producer, fight director, stuntman and assistant director, replenish the world treasury of cinema.

Sammo loves his wife Joyce Mina Godenzi, his family (four sons), his friends and acquaintances very much. This is a very kind and sympathetic person. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, golfing, and tinkering with his many pets.
