Review of the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Belba Pavel

I can’t describe this movie other than “Transformers for the poor.” Judge for yourself:

Directing: Jonathan Liebesman decided not to worry too much and after the Nth number of viewings of the quadrology about robots, he borrowed almost everything from Michael Bay. Megan Fox, color correction, staging, moreover... sometimes it got to the point that entire scenes were blatantly taken from there (only the robot was replaced with a turtle and another one was added to the background). However, he did not take into account two points: he is very far from Bay and it was necessary to review not only “Trans”, but also Michael’s other works (which, in my opinion, are of higher quality).

Budget: This is the third point that prevents Jonathan from being Michael. There is a decent amount of action in the film and, in principle, there are no complaints about it, but the film has problems with the graphics. At times it feels like you are watching a CGI cartoon, where drawn characters are waving at each other (this is especially noticeable in hand-to-hand combat). This can also be seen in Splinter. If the turtles and Shredder in a suit look normal, then the rat looks too cartoonish and unnatural (especially when compared with the raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy).

Humor: This is where the film has big problems. Attempts to introduce stupid teenage humor failed completely (the same problem, not surprisingly, was with “Transformers”). Michelangelo is really annoying with his inappropriate jokes (thank you for at least farting just once). The botanist Donatello and the constant squabbles between Raphael and Leonardo also do not improve the situation in any way in terms of humor. The film managed to make the audience laugh only twice - the elevator scene (the best scene in the film) and the Victoria's Secret underwear advertisement (during the end credits) + I want to mention the Turtles' punishment scene =). For an action comedy, this is extremely little (let us once again remember Guardians of the Galaxy, where while watching... the audience laughed across the stage).

Megan Fox: although she doesn't look a bit like the April O'Neil from my childhood, I have to give her credit... she doesn't infuriate. She looks more natural than in Transformers 2 and tries to act. I must say, thanks to the creators, that April remained just a curious journalist who is trying in every possible way to find a cool report. They didn’t turn her into a boy-woman or some kind of sex symbol. After all, the children will watch. :)

We’ve finished the small “comparison” with Transformers, now let’s move on to the Turtles (or rather, what’s left of them).

The characters are nothing special. The turtles fight and joke, Splinter plays smart and fights, April sticks her nose where it shouldn’t and gets into various troubles, Shredder acts out and... fights. If you think about it, then in the old cartoons everything was exactly the same, but for some reason it seems to me that then everything was a little better, more interesting and funnier.

Fights: I didn’t expect anything interesting from the film in this regard, in general I didn’t get anything. However, it should be noted that (in total) I received several minutes of good camera work, and this is a rarity these days. The choreography, unfortunately, could not please us either. The film presents the purest standard HMA, which, in my opinion, despite the abundance of acrobatic stunts, is not at all interesting to watch on the screen.

By the way... I can’t get past the moment how Splinter and the Turtles became masters of Ninjutsu. It’s all very simple: Splinter found a self-instruction book “The Way of the Ninja” in the trash, studied it and began to train on it, becoming a master of Ninjutsu, he taught the turtles this art of combat. It seems to me, or does the story about a rat who daily watched the training of its owner (who was a real master of Ninjutsu) and repeated his training after him look less absurd than learning this martial arts from a book?

As a result, we have the most ordinary average film that may appeal to children or simply people who do not expect anything special from this film, but just go to the cinema and watch SOMETHING. It’s a shame that the cult story about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles turned into something like this. On the other hand, there was a desire to review earlier film adaptations (animated series and feature films of the 90s).

PS It was nice to see Whoopi Goldberg, and I think I saw Daniel Berndhart (although the Foot Clan all look the same :) ).

I went to see the film with my child... I don’t agree even once with the negative presentation of the review! I, oddly enough for local film critics ;), liked the film. I’m not a fan of “turtles”; I wasn’t expecting anything supernova and/or supernatural—I just wanted to go and see it. I noted only a few points for myself:
    - “The Turtles” are drawn very, very well, but they could have been better (I agree that for some reason Splinter stands out in the direction of being more cartoonish). The example of Guardians of the Galaxy is very convincing. This also applies, for example, to the chase scene along a snowy mountain, where the rendered cars stand out clearly.
    - The “turtles” really look somewhat, I would say, “mutant-like,” but after a while I got used to it and didn’t pay attention anymore. I think the reason for this vision of “turtles” should be sought in some “jocks” who, due to steroids, looked/look, to put it mildly, “ugly”. :)
    - Megan Fox is getting a little too much screen time.
    - The things are not always funny, but the people in the audience and I laughed more than 2 times (perhaps less intelligent people live in my city ;)). I think the nuance here is purely age-related - the film is aimed at a younger audience. However, I still had fun. :)

What about fights - actually, fights have never been a strong feature of all versions of the “turtles”, this also applies to the previous 3 films. There are few action scenes, but in my opinion they are drawn/modeled/performed well, although sometimes “flickering” catches the eye - when it is not clear what is happening on the screen. :)

The child liked it too! If it comes out on BD, I’ll buy it and watch it again. :)

Actually, it’s always been this way and it’s good that it remains that way, but what else did you expect?

    Something funny and interesting. =)

Speaking about the huge Turtles, they are mutants, that’s what they are, and not strong dwarfs.

In principle (if memory serves) in all cartoons they are strong dwarfs, slightly shorter than a person, but stronger.

I liked the movie because you have to think about something yourself, rather than handing everything to us on a platter.

I didn’t notice this in the Turtles, but if you like this kind of thing, then watch Universal Soldier 4, you will definitely like it. =)

I slightly disagree with the author of the review.

"The Turtles fight and joke, Splinter plays smart and fights, April sticks her nose where it shouldn't and gets into various troubles, Shredder acts out and... fights."

Actually, it’s always been this way and it’s good that it remains that way, but what else did you expect?
And here again is the story about the book Ninjutsu. I’m interested in why everyone thinks so shallowly?) Why exactly from the book, maybe the book gave me the idea. As I noticed, they have a near future with their technologies and in the sewer itself there are a lot of monitors, maybe they downloaded them there from some torrents)))
Speaking about the Turtles are huge, they are mutants, that’s what they are, not strong dwarfs. The rat just let us down, it’s too scary ((
I liked the movie because you have to think about something yourself, rather than handing everything to us on a platter. I'm done.
Oh yeah, it was also funny when Mikey saw something funny on TV)

I recommend going to the movie!!!

Well, what kind of "Tatsumaka"?) This is a semblance of White's blow from Blood and Bone!!!! The one and only "Tatsumaka" is in the cartoon, everything else is pathetic "Carousel"!!!!!

The Romans and the Crusaders in China are a historical fact, why not make a film. There are films about the Japanese and Portuguese in medieval Thailand, about an American in Japan, etc.

Only in these historical “facts” for some reason the words “apparently”, “perhaps”, “probably”, “we must assume”, “allows us to draw a conclusion” and stuff like that are too often found.

I don’t want to write that it’s not so at all because there’s nothing to write about, there are simply no fights, there’s a “sketchy resemblance” nothing more. What did you expect from the film? Incredible, vibrant and non-standard fights and action scenes

I haven’t seen the film itself yet, but the trailers are already puzzling: why are the turtles so huge? How many steroids did you have to take to look like that? Bitsukhi has more goals. They resemble mini-Godzillas) But even in the last full-length cartoon they looked quite miniature. And in the original they did not differ in special sizes. And here... Just steroid monsters! Apparently, Ronnie Coleman did the character design))

    Fuck meh!!!

    Author's gravatar

First, I want to say thank you to Pavel Belba, because he helped me “save” 500 rubles. for a movie ticket. Reviews from other sites are written off-topic. There is nothing to understand: whether there are fights or action in the film, or not.
I would like to express everything in a nutshell, but I understand that this is unlikely to happen.
And so, what can I say, let’s look at the cast of directors of some martial arts film, for example Flash Point (Donnie Yen ...action director) I think that says it all 1 person takes responsibility for directing the action in the entire film and performs it superbly.

    Now let's take new turtles:
    1. Nuo Sun - fights choreographer / stunt performer
    2. Sunny Sun - fights choreographer
    3. Don Thai Theerathada - fight team
    4. Garrett Warren - fight coordinator - reshoots / stunt coordinator - reshoots

A whole crowd of people, you can’t say it any other way. I’ll say right away that for me the movie is divided strictly into 2 parts: the plot and visualization, in this film I’m interested in, only the action scenes, no more, well, maybe the output is 5 plus (bright appearance of a character), etc. In general, something visually bright and interestingly representing the discipline or martial art that the main characters profess.
Returning to the beginning, after watching the film I came to the conclusion that either this whole “gang of directors” are people who drew titles and ranks for themselves and in the position that is indicated in the credits there are complete zeros, or the financial side of the issue (the film’s budget went into his pockets and , it was only enough to indicate their names in the credits, and the fights were staged by some “kitchen androids.”)

In my opinion, a sensible action scene can be filmed only in two cases:
    1. The director will go to the “egregor” and find out what visual artists, martial arts fans and just good action from the whole planet want to see and shoot a film.
    2. The film was made by a person who lives by this and understands the topic 3245366%, that is, a “fan”, I can’t think of another term (if we speak broadly, by a person or a team of people who understand equally well both in art (story boarding) as well as in the field of martial arts, to be able to distinguish one BI from another, to see clear differences in schools and styles and, of course, to have an extraordinary imagination and know the market, what and how was filmed in which films, what has already been shown, in general, an “experienced chef” )

There is no third option. The film was shot... but it wasn’t shot at all, there is nothing in it. I don’t want to write that it’s not so at all because there is nothing to write about, there are simply no fights, there is a “sketchy resemblance” nothing more .What did you expect from the film? Incredible, vibrant and non-standard fights and action scenes. After all, even much less depends on stuntmen than in a regular movie, just “animate” the fight scenes and enjoy the result. And then everyone failed.

I would like to note an incomprehensible trend (it started with the endings of Tekken 5) characters turn into well-fed candy bars. Now this is visible in the new games of MK ninjas, they become fantastic, pumped up warriors with unloading vests. New games of the SF series in Ryu, Frodo's legs! The turtles in the film look like “pumped Yeti”, there can be no fights with people (not to mention the combat robot, the “Shredder” class, very much reminded of “Silver Samurai” from the last film about Wolverine, the same situation,”mutated soda water machine " =(Do you remember the indignation of fans of films about Transformers that the car turns into a huge robot (where does all this extra “meat” come from)?
I really want to ask a few questions to the directors and cameramen, why do they do this?
The bitter truth is that now is the time for quick money and I clearly understand that people will rush to buy everything in a row, no matter what the situation is. Well, in extreme cases, there will be no “sequel” and business. So, what are these films cannot be avoided. And writing reviews by the Russian-speaking population is also useless; hardly anyone from the film team monitors reviews on specialized sites and draws conclusions based on their content.

First the Romans were driven into Medieval China, now the Crusaders. Who's next? Bushmen?

I remembered: “Three Heroes and the Shamakhan Queen.” There Dobrynya Nikitich ended up in China and waved with the local fighters, after which they asked him “WHAT kind of style is this “ZaShi-Boo”?” =D

    Externally, turtles look gorgeous

The design is normal, but the nostrils confuse (and true fans of the classics are generally enraged =). But I agree with one opinion: "If the main characters Turtles and Splinter are such SCARY monsters, then what will the VILLAINS Bibom and Rocksteady look like?" =D

By the way, the film, despite average criticism, started well in America and a sequel is scheduled for 2016.

My pleasure. Thanks for your review. Why not a word about PIZZA?

About pizza: good question, if memory serves, the topic of pizza is raised only once - in the scene of the punishment of the turtles.

    The art is gorgeous. =)

I agree with the review. I’m not disappointed only because I was determined in advance that it would be. And that irritation broke through.
The only good thing about the film is the special effects. But they are too cartoony.

    Author's gravatar

Of course, I’m not 15, but a little older :), but I’ll still go to the cinema - I want to watch another story about turtles. Let it be a remake or just another fiction - it doesn’t matter, it’s interesting + I always wanted to see well-modeled and animated turtles, which was missing in previous films (although there were other features :)).
