Short films Blowback and When Kids Grow Up

The end of the year is just around the corner and summing up action films for the year 2016, and among the nominations, of course, there will be a place for short films. Therefore, today we invite you to look at a couple of interesting works.

blow

The first film is called "Recoil" (Blowback) and tells the story of Alex Mason, one of the best secret agents in the world. However, when it comes to women, things are not going so smoothly for Alex. His insidious friend Monica constantly mistrusts and suspects him of something. But how to combine dangerous work as a spy, an operation to eliminate a weapons baron and a happy personal life?

The film is directed by a debutant Robert Jahnke. He is also a co-author with Aaron Thomas wrote the script. The titular karateka and taekwondoka starred in the title role of “Recoil.” Jessen Novello, and they kept him company Alexandra Bromstad, Scott Vance и Megan Brotherton.

grows up

The next short film in genre is an action drama called "When kids grow up" (When Kids Grow Up). Starring an American dancer, stuntwoman and actress Marissa Labog.

The official synopsis reads as follows: This is a short-form drama that explores the harsh pathology of sexual assault and the violence that follows it.

The film was shot by a director, stuntman and action director Shahaub Rudbari, who worked on projects such as the TV series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", blockbuster "Suicide Squad" and others.

In addition to Marissa Labog (“Law of Valor,” “Annihilation”), the short film stars Luke Cook (TV series “Librarians”), Aaron Leddick (“Baby”), Rudbari himself and others.

Do you know what guys are the most offensive? We are shitting ourselves here, and these bastard under-directors and producers, as well as actors who are silent all the time (in most cases), don’t care about all of us. They cut off the money, paid off the loan for a house, a car, a helicopter, and then went on to create another remake of the remix.
I would imprison such people for inciting conflicts on all continents.
Now 97% of the world is ruled by fear and having brains is not a priority.
I was also not happy when I saw the teaser of KUN FU YOGA and RAILWAY TIGERS. I won't even comment on this.
Guys, we come here almost like we’re at home and let’s maintain a positive degree of relationship, even though it’s sometimes not easy. I'm sure a lot will change over time. But you need patience. One is always replaced by another. This is a circular movement. And it is inevitable.
    All peace and good!

      Alex,

      Jaidev,

Shadrin is right here. They don't give a damn about us and they film as they want.

Nolan is mentioned here. Nolan and Snyder set the tone by filming pretentious films with stupid scripts, bad fights and overrated special effects. Because of the death of Heath Ledger, Nolan became famous (compare the box office before and after TR) and became the standard for filming. This may well be the reason why fights in blockbusters have become acceptable bullshit (Marvel, fortunately, is trying to save the situation, as Cap 3 says).

Regarding trolling. Alex scattered his position in great detail and point by point, and obviously does this often, especially against Nolan fans, who are difficult to penetrate and do not listen to arguments, shouting “Go watch Twilight” (by the way, I watched the first part of the norm), so he counts every controversial moment as trolling - which is not entirely correct, and you need to read every comment carefully.

Returning to Shadrin - you represent directors, stuntmen and fighters from Russia here on the site. But you cannot shoot a simple martial arts video in half a day, although you have a studio (with students), an experienced cameraman (Vishnev) and Kalashnikov as comrades. It will take a couple of hours for you to figure out some kind of joke. Even I have a video on the topic of BI (filmed in 3 hours) - but you reply, “I’ll check everything until the AFTER FRAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!”, although an experienced filmmaker can make candy out of nothing.

uranium, Hmm, it’s kind of like talking to people about the quality of poems, that they can’t digest them since school,))). I didn’t try to stand up for Nolan, Snyder, or especially Ledger)), they don’t need that in any way,... well, absolutely)). I tried to talk about the correctness of statements, even if it was boiling...
No more and no less... This is my IMHO)))
        Still.
Here’s a thought for me about “Now in 97% of the world, fear rules and having brains is, oh, not a priority.” Jaidev is very close. It was not in vain, in my opinion, that we talked...
        Hence.
Well-staged combat scenes, in my opinion, should not be beautiful, but scary, so that people understand what is sport and what is death...
With this approach, NOBODY in the world of cinematography passes the standard of exemplary quality. Entertainment everywhere +/-.
        Something like that.

          Alex,
“In my opinion, well-staged combat scenes should not be beautiful, but scary, so that people understand what is sport and what is death...”
          - Very interesting point! As for entertainment... when I watched DINER or DRAGONS FOREVER, I understood that there is work behind it, and that you need to work hard for more than one year in the gym.
And now, especially in Hong Kong, puny boys are trying to seem like super fighters.
Or you seem to be watching ONG BAK or RAIDS, realizing that this seems to be serious, but you see that this is not the same drive and energy with full physical dedication.
Early Seagal evoked the idea that it was better not to meet with him. He will definitely break something for you, and yes, he will break it well. With a delicious crunch! BUT again, not everywhere.

        uranium,

Roman, you are right in your own way. As in the fact that he once advised me to work quantitatively, not qualitatively. But I do not want. And to be honest, I can't. I haven't learned in 43 years. Yes, I have a school, boys and girls, as well as technical capabilities, BUT...WHY?
I just did a stunt commercial for my film studio - FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 16 YEARS!
Having named it - WELD A BLOCKBUSTER IN 90 SECONDS. The sound engineer is currently working on it. I'll probably launch it at the end of the week. And I'm proud of her. It shows how in 90 seconds you can find all the ingredients and make a great movie. It carries a very good message of quality cinema, and not just bang bang and thousand thousand. It will be possible to say - How to make a good film without a penny of money? And you look at this advertisement and you will see how the guys conceived it from scratch and implemented it at a decent level.
The same applies to films. I put into them what I want to express or tell people. Because it interests me. Why, after LOVE BY REFERENCE, did I decide to start helping young people? Yes, because they have great ideas and can implement them. This is where we are talking about quantity. If Fedorov or Vdovin wants to make a cool film, turning to Shadrin - this is the other side of the coin. But this is a parallel reality. Which will only be released after the premiere of LOVE BY REFERENCE. Because I want everyone who watches this movie to form their own opinion.
Someone will say - Oh, I’ll work with Shadrin, and someone will say - Yes, he’s a babble, what can we get from him!
I want a person to believe in his dream and go with me to the end. Leaving KINOPRODUKT after cooperation.
About the videos: I don't need fight videos. I need films that will leave something about me in the history of cinema. Or interesting advertising, which again essentially resembles a mini film.
I adhere to the position - let there be one film, but it will be better than ten average and passable ones.
Speaking about cinema, I personally outlined:
        1. A cop movie (tribute to Melville, Verneuil, Wu and Tsui Hark) UNDER THE MASK OF ICE AND FIRE
        2. War film about archers during the Second World War 7 SHOOTERS
        3. Adventure musical AROUND THE WORLD for...
        4. An eccentric action film COZHURKI about adventures on a certain island in search of a family treasure
        5. Prequel to the Italian horror film DEMONS.
        I listed my own productions.

In the editing room are the STRANGER and PRECIPITATIONS. LOVE ACCORDING TO REFERENCE will be released in December, SLIMP is on the Internet.
In my opinion, very good and clear plans for life. And I will be happy realizing what I dreamed of. The quantity doesn't interest me.
If you wanted to make a GUY IN A HAT - please! But I won't direct. I can help by tying up loose ends and putting in a lot of effort, but I won’t work hard on this project. Because it's not mine. This is the brand of Sergei Morin and his hero.
Just like in LOVE BY REFERENCE. If this were Shadrin’s film, then a lot would be different, but this is a film by Vishnev and Shadrin (even though they say that 70% was made by me). We have the same situation as with DRUNKEN MASTER 2. But I am happy with the outcome, in which everyone shared their own opinions and respected each other. And there is also a plus in the fact that one adjusts the other. Perhaps this is exactly what I lacked in purely MY PROJECTS.

And to be honest, now the last thing I want is to prove or find out something to someone. It is much more important to focus on your moments of life and creativity.

Namely, that DIV found fault with the fact that I spoke in the plural, as if I represented the interests of all fans of action films in general. I understand that I am not a local community leader and cannot speak for everyone. It’s just that the videos that Danil posted in this news infuriated me, so I wrote everything out of emotion. Nevertheless, I tried not to lose my head and explained my position.

I don’t butt heads with anyone on the Internet, I just troll very hard, with a lot of swearing and insults. However, everything that I saw recently inspired me to write so many sheets of text, because the topic is close to me like nothing else.

"When Children Grow Up" is a very impressive work. Like drama. Labog played well, the bastards - life-loving types - came out.
At the same time, even in "S.H.I.E.L.D." editing is often more interesting in fights IMHO than here. And I didn’t really believe in the fight choreography when watching it, considering that this is not a comic after all, but made to look like real life...

Blame directors (box office and popular directors!) for having intelligence and pretentiousness??))...
What else should they be? Because of their intelligence and pretentiousness, they promoted their talent, and yes - it does not include high-quality filming of bi-fights, it’s a pity.
    But.
Calling a person behind his back is somehow low (I’m talking about Nolan and Wright), you don’t like his films - write about them, scold them (with good reason about the twitchy filming, but why these teenage name-calling, like in the back alley? Everyone here considers themselves, I suppose, decent people who do NOT have to use the vocabulary of “trolls” to assert themselves?

      Author's gravatar

      Alex,
Don’t pretend to be a white knight on the Internet, here morality doesn’t give a damn to anyone, no one controls me, I say what I want. And I say that I am dissatisfied, that the current situation makes me angry and resentful, I no longer have the strength to do the same thing year after year: download the film just to skip the timing between the battle scenes, which is essentially filler, and not a complete basis for a film.

Paradoxically, it's not just the fights that make a film a film. Any fight is much better etched in the memory and touches the soul if there is a story behind it, if you worry about the protagonist, if you want him to win, if you hate the antagonist and want him to lose, or vice versa, you respect him. I love “Ip Man” and “Immortal” not only for the fights, this is only half of their success, but also because in an hour and a half I live a whole life full of adventures and twists and turns.

        Author's gravatar

Just for the fights I love Ip Man and The Immortal

What kind of movie is immortal, can you tell me?

AlexWell, indeed, I am wrong in expressing my opinion to you.
And yes, for me the norms of communication are based not on street fights (which I have also been in), but on arguments like the second part of your answer - where everything is clear and really clear))).

Everything is hopeless. For some reason, normal directors and screenwriters are not interested in fighting games. They consider it beneath their dignity to work in this field. Why? Do they think we are imbeciles? Do they think that fans of artistic fights in training have lost their last brains? This genre is no worse than others; here you can always come up with a good plot with interesting characters. As a result, there is one trash on YouTube who organizes children's amateur performances.
From Western combat cinema, I know only three truly good films:
    1) Danny Chain Dog
    2) Chrysalis
    3) Undisputed 2, the third part is frankly worse both in plot and in fights
The Bourne Identity could be a good example, but the fights there are ruined by editing.

      Alex,

All this is debatable, because it is a matter of taste. But what does this have to do with a feature-length film when the material is about a short film?

      Did you like these films?

        Author's gravatar

        Danil Chupakhin,
So the situation is the same in both cases. Every year a bunch of short films are released that earn awards at independent film festivals, have any of these pompous turkeys paid attention to our genre? What's stopping you from making a stylish, smart short film, like the ones they show at Sundance, but with fights? A film of the level of Drive, in which there is fight choreography, is what is sorely lacking today for the genre to be taken seriously, and not associated with such an abomination as JCVD. There is no real quality bar anywhere, so no one is trying, truly talented people are not drawn here, only trash-makers.

And the short films are shit, I couldn’t even watch them to the end, in the first there were stupid, unfunny jokes and shitty editing, in the second there were shitty fights, the actress moved ineptly. Both there and there terrible acting.

          Author's gravatar

          Alex,

Unfortunately, we either raised expectations for action films too high, or failed to lower them along with the genre itself. Interesting films from BI come out in abundance every year. But we don’t like everything, because... It’s not Nolag/Spielberg/Bertolucci who shoots, but noneames. This year there were extremely good “Unlucky Stars”, “One Million K(l)iks”, “Die Fighting” - fan-made, but very high-quality works. There was quite a cinematic “Never Back Down 3” with White, etc. In general, it’s not to say that there are no contenders, we just don’t like it anymore, we can’t please it anymore. In this case, there are two options: either give up modern combat cinema and watch old favorite hits, or give modern cinema a chance every time, enjoying even the smallest things.

            Author's gravatar

            DIV,
Well, let's look at what you wrote piece by piece. It seems that you really shell-shocked sub-troll. You cling to words instead of formalizing your answer normally.

Unlucky Stars - the choreography is very simple, only Dennis Ruel with his aikido pleased. In the end they heated up and came out with something more or less sane. As an homage to Jackie Chan’s films, it’s a complete failure, the jokes are unfunny, they are as close to Jackie Chan as they are to Cheboksary.
The plot, as it should be, was squandered, and thank God, trying to understand why the hell it was all messed up turned into a headache. The music is terrible, some kind of electronic stuff. Sometimes even the lighting is bad, the sun on the street sometimes shines brightly, sometimes dimly.

A Million Clicks is the best plot among all four films, even the drama with grief works in half, but I don’t want to watch it a second time, as they said earlier, this is just a tribute to Möller. The fights are uninteresting, Möller exclusively flails his legs and uses jujutsu techniques. The only bright spot was Li Yanlong, but he was not allowed to show his full potential.

The Price of Success (Die Fighting) - the best choreography, they showed kung fu, even better than in Chinese films, but the worst plot. Firstly, the actors use their real names, and Fabien Garcia turns out to be a villain who betrayed his friends, looks creepy and unpleasant. Secondly, the drama doesn’t work, when Fabien’s friends died one by one, I wanted to laugh, it was all so ridiculous, the characters were flat as pancakes. Also annoying were these endless zooms to simulate documentary shooting.

In general, the legacy of Jackie Chan has been completely screwed up; in all three of the above-mentioned films, there is terrible editing everywhere, the main character raised his fist - the camera moved to another place to show from a new angle. Why the hell? This is not a Hollywood star hitting, but a martial arts master, his movements do not need to be hidden. The best is the enemy of the good, there is no need to look for a new plan to better see how the enemy flies away.

The plots are crap everywhere. In A Million Clicks, at least the plot was simple, but as soon as they try to build up the intrigue, everything immediately goes to hell and the result is Death Grip level feces.

Garcia and Ruel did everything themselves, but you need to understand your limitations, you can’t write complicated, write simply, but well. And they created some scandals, intrigues, investigations, where it was not a sleeve sewn on the mare.

Never give up 3 - I didn’t waste anything, the beginning was good, but then everything became sterile and dull. A lot of water, boring sidelines, uninteresting secondary characters that serve as a contrast against the background of the mighty White. Tony Jaaa was made to look like an idiot, Janine didn't show anything special, they both served as furniture and bait for the audience. As the film progresses, the main character suddenly becomes dumb and only sees through the setup a few days later.

Not bad fights for a sports film, it was interesting to watch karate techniques, but I was surprised that everyone used elbows, this is prohibited in MMA.

There is no normal training montage, the best part of all sports films, there is no feeling of excitement and tension for the final battle. Drama out of nowhere, as if Braga had a chance. The ending is typical for the trilogy, the main character again breaks the fight and fights outside the ring. The last two hits looked stupid.

White is stuck in the monotonous role of a wise big man who always hangs his hat on everyone with a calm demeanor, he has turned into the Pugacheva of fighting cinema, everyone respects him for his age, for his merits, and almost bows down to his feet. Mikhalkov, damn it, a great movie about the great me.

Also, for some reason, they show the reactions of the audience, which spoils the rhythm of the scenes. I’m watching the fight, and they show me someone’s frightened face.

I'm not demanding that Bertolucci make a movie about fights, no one needs that. But those who work in this area should at least flex their brains a little and enroll in screenwriting courses, watch a good movie to understand how to shoot, watch a bad movie to understand how not to shoot. Or at least go to film festivals, normal film festivals, look for a screenwriter who will do the work for them, who will come up with a normal plot, and not an excuse for fights.

Why suddenly the requirements for action films need to be lowered? Is this some sort of Special Olympics where you have to put other downs in the ring against downs? If, in essence, action cinema is, with rare exceptions, independent, then let's compare them with other independent films and then it will be revealed to you what anal abyss you have driven yourself into with your standards.

              Author's gravatar

              Alex,

Well, let's look at what you wrote piece by piece. One gets the impression that you are a really shell-shocked half-troll. You cling to words instead of formalizing your answer normally.

Is a point of view different from yours already passed off as a shell-shocked trololo? OK. Nevertheless, I will remain with my opinion, especially after reading the answer.

Let me explain. The cool action films we would like are not being made right now. For what reason is question ten. What remains? Watch modern films and spit at them? Maybe. But then why the hell watch this movie? I haven’t watched any of the mentioned films, although they are, of course, not ideal. You can find cons in any movie, even a good one. But it’s much more pleasant to look for the positives in films. The plot is lame, the choreography is not great, the music is not mine, the light is not right, the camera is shaking, the angle is not correct, the athletes don’t play very well... I’ll close my eyes to this, because it’s better to watch such a combat movie than not watch it at all under the pretext “they still don’t film like before.”

Well, I think that since cool action films are not being made year after year, then there are some difficulties with this. Maybe BI fans don’t go to the cinema to see such films and don’t buy DVDs? In the end, each author has his own vision of cinema.

You don’t have to belittle it, but then there will be nothing to “feed” this “hobby”, since everything is shit everywhere and they don’t produce anything good anymore. And we're not just talking about films with BI.

      Author's gravatar

      Alex,
No, the action genre is generally despised by drama writers and directors, but when they take it on...
      1) Christopher Govnolan considers himself too smart for action, so he can’t even really film it.
      2) Zack Snyder makes great action films, but at the same time his films are pretentious and he thinks that they are smarter than they really are, except maybe Watchmen, but this is no longer his merit.
      3) There was only one fight in The Equalizer and it had such a stupid ending with a corkscrew stab, it really disappointed me.
      4) Hannah - Joe Wright needs to take the watermelon out of his mouth through his ass, just one knife fight, which is again ruined by the shit camera and extraneous cutscenes involving a fat lesbian. The film itself is stupid pseudo-arthouse crap.

        Author's gravatar

        Alex,

A glass of the best wine for this guy. Almost completely agree.

They don’t play the fighting game because it’s not a format.
