Usually Jaidev is the main critic of our site, but... He’s kind of being too kind now, I’ll be a critic (as far as possible). =D

“Training the Body and Spirit” is a normal video, I can’t say that it somehow delighted me, but in principle it was filmed normally, it’s beautiful and I liked the music. The slowdown was a bit NOT smooth, abrupt or something, but I think this is a technical problem, not an idea.

"Roland Deschain vs Red Hood" - the dynamics of the battle are very lacking. They work very schematically, as if they are thinking in parallel, “Now I’m hitting you like this, you block, then you hit me, I block” and so for almost the entire fight, coupled with wushu elements, this is reminiscent of the fighting games of the pre-Bryusov era, where the fights looked very theatrical and feignedly. Speaking of wushu, to be honest it looks superfluous in battle... between a cowboy and a mercenary. Those. either mix styles and add something from other martial arts (as Donnie Yen does, which both traditional wushu and modern MMA can show, depending on the role/film) or try to show it so that it looks adequate regardless of the theme of the film /characters (for example, Jet Li in Kiss of the Dragon or Mark Dacascos in Drive, who demonstrate sports wushu in a very...brutal and modern style). I also want to note that the ending with the shooting and simultaneous hits was very drawn out, the feeling is that a minute and a half, or even more, could be safely cut out of 5.50 and the battle would only get better.

"Scorpion vs Solomon Grundy" - this is honestly a complete failure. Initially, you chose an unsuccessful character to compete with Scorpio (for such a style of film duel... he is not suitable), and in the end... you ruined the script. The feeling that you haven’t been able to decide what you want to film... the FIGHT of Scorpio against Grundy or the story about the difficult fate of Grundy. If the first, then Grundy’s backstory can be safely cut out, if the second, then the title needs to be changed (who is interested in the character of Solomon...read his story on Wikipedia) and the timing increased. But it turned out something average, like a fight...the video is boring (you can easily cut out 2-3 minutes), like a story...not interesting. + I personally don’t really like the sharp “motion-frame” editing, because... This does not add dynamics, but makes the battle abrupt and not cohesive.

    - I think that over time, if the guys move on, they will have a good future. The main thing is to learn, hear, compare and work accordingly, and the result will be automatic.
The same Eric Jacobas began with not at all CHIC sketches.

...and now you and I are watching “GROUNDHOUS DAY” and are simply stunned! Everything has its time. The main thing is the desire to do something.
Speaking of wanting to do it.
It would be nice to make everything grotesque in this short film. Because the theme with the stones is a little “fun”. Although, in essence, everything seems to be serious.
The guys miss the acting and the terrible editing.
That’s what struck me in the first short film of my Belarusian colleagues.
There is such a term FOR INSTALLATION.
Let’s say we film a blow and a fall in two frames:
In the first frame, one hits the other, but always plays out the continuation. For example, your emotional reaction after a blow, so that everything will be smooth in the next frame. Like the one who was beaten, in the first frame he plays out the approach to the fall. Accordingly, in the second frame, while performing the fall, everything goes perfectly.

There is room to turn around.
Oh, good light you have there!!! If only they could separate the heroes, it would be great! BUT this again depends on the location of the light lamps in the room. After all, the light cannot be the same
    Do you understand me…
And the security guards are asking because the room is dark, and the heroes are in dark clothes. And even the red hat doesn’t save you.

The workshop usually has a lot of props. You can use it.
But this is again more for the choreographers.

hmm)) what do you mean by the phrase separate the heroes? There are no problems with the light in the videos. I have a background in art academy, graphic design and photography. I regularly work as a designer and as a photographer I feel the composition, I know how to set the light, and in the video there are no overexposed parts or over-darkened ones, the light draws everywhere with a reflex. There is no contrasting backlit - yes. Well, it’s all about the number of light sources. With what we had available, we got the best picture.
What is missing: just experience in filming action scenes - but this is being developed.

“In my opinion, you can take the best shots with dynamics hand-held and with a Steadicam. But chaotic shaking with an immersive effect is not the answer, this is how they most often try to hide the poor work of stuntmen.”

    - It all depends on what kind of dynamics you want in the frame. Look at ARMOR OF GOD 1. I wouldn’t say that the camera flew there like in THE MATRIX, but the dynamics there are amazing in fights with monks and Amazons.
But here there are more questions for choreographers, actors and, ultimately, editors.
The fact that you feel the picture is already a plus. Especially considering the fact that you are a girl, not a man. What I mean is that guys, so to speak, are closer to action. And this is amazing. You are well done!
At the moment, you, Victoria, are the best operator I have seen in an independent Russian fighting game. If only you were in the GUY IN THE HAT and there would be no price for this film project!!! And not only this...
Of course you are right - there is always room to grow. And most importantly, the more you learn, the more you realize that you know very little about your activities.

    Regarding the flat picture:
Try to shine where you need it. For example, in the first video, the characters could have been illuminated with backlight, which in the film came from some hanging lampshades. Of course, using good light, and lampshades as props.
You can also play with light. For example, a hero comes into dangerous territory and a red light turns on. Which was sort of the GAME OF DEATH with Bruce Lee.
This will add an artistic touch and give you WHAT YOU NEED.
Play with light and equipment. Shake it up and down, achieving what you want. Everything will be OK!

Victoria, watch BUNRAKA with Josh Harnett. There is simply amazing light there!!! And the camera works very well.
Do you remember DOUBLE IMPACT with Van Damme? How the light is placed in the finale between the containers in the battle, the villain with Spur boots against Vanya!!!
And the camera didn't move. BUT what is the result! Super!
As for Jackie Chan, for me an example of camera work, lighting and editing is, of course, MIRACLES! THE MOST CHIC!!!
And I really like the choreography there. Be sure to check it out.

Why can't you take low plans? Even an ordinary KIT will give them in the right lighting.
But it's all a matter of time. Everything will come if you move forward. From your hands? What for?
use a tripod or slider. The slider is generally a great move.

Your key word is “in the right lighting.” This is a separate conversation, we are a creative group, everything is based on sheer enthusiasm) but we are already trying to gather some base of equipment, the light is the same... But first of all, we are not satisfied with the quality of shooting with a kit lens, it gives a very flat picture.
As for the slider, we have one, a Russian one ((slider Dolly(ba and kaka( In the video, even with perfect alignment of all the legs, it is very noticeable - shaking during movement. A tripod gives almost a photographic image - you want volume, movement.
In my opinion, you can take the best shots with dynamics handheld and with a Steadicam. But chaotic shaking with an immersive effect is not a solution, as most often they try to hide the poor work of the stuntmen.
We will try to shoot more, we have room to grow.

It’s good that we entered into a dialogue on this site. Here, so to speak, is the most hornet's nest of Russian fighting cinema! Thanks for this to the admin and all those who support this resource with their actions!
You are very good as an operator! Congratulations! you work very well with light and try to give a picture, and not shake the camera either out of fright or too much fun.
For this, as they say, special respect to you.
Why can't you take low plans? Even an ordinary KIT will give them in the right lighting.

use a tripod or slider. The slider is generally a great move.
I want to use a lot of movement in my next film. And smooth.
As for plans, watch the films of Jackie Chan or Sammo Hungg (where they are the directors). There are a lot of standard shots that go from film to film. But they always look good.
If you like shooting action, search for Hong Kong cinematographer Arthur Wong on KinoPoisk or another resource. It works amazingly with the camera! He will help you a lot.
I agree with you. You can think up a lot on the spot and enhance the impression of the episode with more interesting plans. Especially if you can “play” with light.

In general, an interesting topic has emerged here. It would be great like this, to dissect the creations of young fighting filmmakers. Look, Russia would catch up with the World Fighting Game. Fortunately, there are all the possibilities for this!!!

    My works?
    As for the movies...
Here's SQUEEZE with experimental color correction.

Personally, I don't really like this experiment. One of these days there will be an international, final version with UNCENSORED inserts, cuts and reworking. But be that as it may, it’s not difficult to discern my work there. This is the first job 10 years ago.
At the end there is a teaser for the full-length comedy film “+20, -35 degrees, precipitation 100%.” This is a later work, (without a single word) which is being assembled at the moment.
And here is a teaser for the film "THE STRANGER", which will be released on New Year's Eve 2015.

Thank you very much for your comments, I am the cameraman of these videos. Of course, I’ve been shooting videos and action scenes quite recently, about a year. And there are very few funds for this activity) and this is by no means an excuse, but nevertheless).
All three videos were shot with Soviet optics. We haven’t gotten hold of expensive lenses yet. Besides, I like the picture that helios gives. But that’s why many things are impossible - such as taking low angles with a full middle and long shot, and that’s why there are no good long angles either. And since the lens is without a stabilizer, it’s a hell of a shake with your hands))
In any case, we will take criticism into account. Especially when it comes to filming itself. We also do storyboards. But more often there is actually a more interesting angle on the spot and then everything is decided according to the situation.
Jaidev, can I have a link to your work? I want to see)

    Author's gravatar

Oh how. Cool! Thank you! Do I understand correctly that such a storyboard is thought out in advance? And then, when re-editing, you often have to shoot more? Or does it depend on the experience of the cameramen-directors-producers?

    - Yes always please. If anything, write. I can handle any action.
Well, in theory this is what happens. First they draw sketches, and then they work on them.
Personally, I never do storyboards. Already on the set I see where and how to shoot, and accordingly the editing has already been thought out.
But making storyboards is more likely to be the right thing to do than the other way around. So there is a clear schedule of how and what to do so as not to forget. I sometimes write in a notebook when, for example, I need to shoot a lot of things during a shooting day.
We once waited for the weather in STRANGER to film a fight scene with several participants, and here we had to record it in order to peep into the cheat sheet, so to speak.
New shoots usually occur in order to improve the episode. For example, we filmed the entire fight or dialogue, but something is missing. And then you realize that there must be some kind of zest in the scene. This is either an interesting angle or a fresh detail that can change a lot...
Sometimes everything is filmed in one take and, surprisingly, does not require reshooting.
It all depends on the degree of preparedness for work.
As for fights, here everything happens more spontaneously. But of course the concept is determined in advance. For example, while filming a fight in KHLUPIK, I clearly saw where everything should begin and end. And we already came up with the middle part along the way, using our imagination and props.
There was a moment when, by the third month of filming, people began to lose steam and two fighters had to be “taken out.” One flew into the utility room, and the other, seeing that he would have a hard time, simply ran away. Although in one version it was planned that I would end the fight at the end of the hall and tie all four of them with a sports rope, pinning them to the gymnastic bars.
But unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, we never filmed this scene. As for the rest, we did everything we wanted then.

Can you talk about this on your fingers and briefly?

    - Of course you can.
I'll start with a fight. The first thing that struck was the use of the same SIDE plans. Why was the 1.41 revolver stamped on the side plan, and not on the bottom plan? It would be much more impressive + it would dilute the feeling from the previous plans. When this is followed by intricate handwork and point-blank shooting (a la EQUILIBRUM in its purest form), why was it not shot with a figure eight? Again, it would be much more effective. Classic, but more effective. Because of some cutting, I did not notice why the weapon at 1.46 spun and ended up behind the ground.
Why? Original editing, ahead of its time?
    Is accepted.
1.47 and 1.48 are identical plans, with a small difference in range. Meaning?
Further, with twists and misses, as well as large legs, everything is fine!
Then at 1.59 and 2.00 it’s the same frame structure. I do not understand why.
At 2.02 there is an EXCELLENT reaction from the “cowboy”. But again, I don’t see her because of the side plan.
    What is needed:
Close-up of the one in the mask + close-up of the cowboy! Reaction!
Clap! Pushed away from each other! Panoramic....
    But no. Average.
    Where is the review???
    We go further:
A pause after a fight and, so to speak, the calm before the storm. Everything is fine.
Preparing to continue. The shot with the large cowboy leg is absolutely superb! A la cameramen by Isaac Florentine.
Next is an attack and an exchange of blows. A fall!
This is where we need an emphasis on the fall. (Minus. The falls are played out weakly. Because of this, the feeling of the force of the blows is lost.)
At 2.48 there is a cross frame. The feeling from this is LOSS IN SPACE. The heroes changed places. (Example of cross-frames in the final fight between Bolo and Vanya in DOUBLE IMPACT, as well as the finale of AWOL).
Get up from behind and attack. Everything is fine, but after the swing (uro-mavashi) everything crosses again. The heroes change places. What the hell???!!!
This is followed by an exchange of blows and a very good transition of the cowboy from right to left. A fall!
Poorly played. You can soar up a little. It will be much more luxurious. It would be possible to take the plan a little to the left and from below, but it is also ACCEPTED!!! This plan may take place.
Here it would be nice to give a close-up reaction of the characters. And add script drama. Still, one of them turned up. And wow! Therefore, the cowboy next sets a goal - to tear and destroy.
    Attack.
But... the cowboy is tripped and he FALLS!
In a side view. But the fall under the turntable looks here in all its glory. Although I would take the plan a little lower. It would be even better. And dust! Dust! Still, the room is available!
Next comes the attack. The pieces are being cut. But what’s interesting is that despite the choppy editing, the speed is still lame. Why? I've already talked about this. ROLLING AWAY. The guys can't get enough of her.
Why is there a subjective camera at 3.10 (there is a wooden beam on the side in the foreground). Does this plan appear later? Is someone watching?
Then everything goes according to the plan and... Two falls. Everything is fine.
They grab a revolver, but due to editing and under-acting, the rhythm of the scene is lost. I DO NOT believe that there was a fight and confusion.
The shot with the cowboy's blood is good, but why can't I see his reaction from below? Eight!!!
From above there is a hand and blood - From below there is a hand (you can through your fingers) a face and his reaction. Still a movie.
    More shots to come!
    Fine. Good.
    Pre-ending. A curtain. Fine.
Next they show the situation. Something will happen. What? One was killed. The second one gets up.
Why not show a close-up of a cowboy's finger that has come to life? And so on...
    Got up and went. Great!
Fell in pain. Badly! Why? Where are the eyes? Where are the emotions that it hurts him. This is a significant moment that we run through our heads with thoughts of what just happened. Again we NEED classic plans. I would generally give the mouth and eyes. A la Leone! Works 100%!
The weapon in close-up is shot from above. Why? Why not show the revolver, the cartridge case and the blood, placing the camera from below + in the background the cowboy would be leaving! This is the final shot! Powerful, dramatic and artistic!
When I opened the door, a DISRUPTION caught my eye. Medium and close-up of the door. It is very visible from the wooden slats. Personally, this completely creeps me out. Although why ME... According to the law of photography, it is advisable to shoot smoothly, unless drama requires it. Perhaps the hero is wounded, and there is a problem. But the distortion is minimal, almost invisible to the eye, so it is an OPERATOR ERROR.
In the very final frame, I would move the revolver, gloves and cartridge case to the left to balance with the skull, and of course I would leave space at the top left for the credits. But overall it's good. On 4.

    Somehow like this...

In some places, filming does not proceed according to schematic plans.

Can you talk about this on your fingers and briefly?

    Ravenside:
Speaking of REBEL... the choreography is partly from there! And the plans are almost the same in the first scene. But anyway - well done guys! If we take into account everything that I saw in Russia from independent teams, especially in such a post-apocalyptic setting, this is the best. The lighting in the first fragment is very good! Glue up the installation a little and it will be even better! And by the way, there are absolutely no “empty frames”. This is a big +!!!
A small minus is that in some places the shooting does not proceed according to schematic plans. Although... this doesn't really affect the perception. It would be interesting to see some of the team's latest work.

Yeah, not Bat of the Sun though.

Not without its shortcomings, but very promising, original, beautiful and humorous, bravo!
I involuntarily compared these works with the famous creation of domestic production - no comments...
Good luck guys, I'll keep an eye on your work.

Well done boys! GOOD for the picture! And in some places it’s even great.
    The choreography is okay. There is only one minus here - O T Y G R O V A!!!
She doesn't exist at all. That's why it looks fake. In some fragments it seemed to me that they didn’t cut off the extra frames after they said - Motor!
If the guys move on, they will notice the mistakes and will do even better. Here we are praising Jacobas, but at the beginning of his career in 2003 he did such a mess that the same notorious final fight in SLIMP (filmed at the same time. But the FIRST work after all) will give a hundred points ahead.
The main thing is to have interesting ideas, implemented with great dedication and energy.
    In general, well done!!!

The picture is certainly beautiful, but the choreography is a little lame, especially in the Scorpio/Grundy pair.

I remembered Florentine's "Rebel" again. By the way, the aesthetics and, in particular, the main character are somewhat similar to the aesthetics of The Dark Tower. And the main hero’s name is also Roland, only the last names are different.

I really liked the short film! It was beautifully shot, atmospheric and stylish, and the guys have charisma)

Do Belarusians make combat short films? 0_0 Forward friends and comrades! We believe in you!

    Author's gravatar

I more or less liked the first video... but as comrade Ravensid said above, “it’s too staged,” and this clearly catches the eye.
The second one, I barely watched it...however, I liked how Solomon's backstory was presented. It's not even bad... but that's all.

In general, a strange choice (except for Scorpio) of characters.

Guys, I wish you good luck in the future.

    Author's gravatar

I'm currently reading the second book in the Dark Tower series. But I didn’t make it past half of the short film. Although the start is good, the music, the atmosphere, the color rendition. And then I got tired of it, the fight was too artificial and staged. And Roland is not dragging his feet here at all. A fake shooter.
