Philippine police will keep an eye on movie pirates

The Philippine National Police will recently act as security forces at local movie theaters. They are tasked with enforcing a recently passed law prohibiting video recording during sessions.

A press conference was held today in Manila to announce collaboration with three industry organizations: the National Film Association of the Philippines (NCAP), the Anti-Movie Piracy Council (MPAFPC) and the Feature Film Association (MPA).

This law was approved at the end of May, as one of the last signed by the former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Violators face a fine of 1 000 to 17 000 dollars and imprisonment for up to 6 years.

“We hope that the Philippines, as the first country in Southeast Asia to enact such a law, will serve as an example for other countries by proving the law's success in curbing the flow of pirated films,” - I said, Mike Robinson, Senior Vice President, Copyright Division, Chief of Operations, Feature Film Association of America (MPAA).

There was no mention of any upcoming film, except for one line mentioning Ray Park and rumors of an Iron Fist film. It says that both the writer and the Marvel journalists who helped write the article are silent about this project.

In it, Nigel Clarke talks about how the various comic book issues were created and his conversation with Stan Lee.

By the way, the article is for June 8, 2009.

    For example, I don’t care, I basically don’t watch screen copies. :)
