Review of the film Flying Swords of Dragon Gate with Jet Li

Films “wuxia” (wuxia), or martial arts films, belong to a separate genre of Chinese cinema. The most memorable ones don't necessarily have to be filled with non-stop fights, but rather the ones where the main characters extol the so-called entity Osia – devotion, purposefulness, free expression of emotions and help to the weak from the strong.

Director Tsui Hark succeeded in creating Osia-films that made an indelible impression on the audience, including the same “New Dragon Tavern”. But will there be his new film? “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” (Flying Swords of Dragon Gate) as successful as its predecessor?

Taking into account previous achievements Tsui Harka, his fans know that he has at least an adequate understanding of the essence Osia. A typical example is Zhou Huai'an, character Jet Li. Being a skilled swordsman, Zhou considers it his duty to cleanse the government Min from power-mad officials. Because he chose a dangerous path, he consciously decided to reject the love of a female swordsman Lin Yanqiu. Despite this Lin wants to sacrifice himself for Zhou and his mission. Left with Lin alive after an impossible task, Zhou finally plucking up the courage to sort out his feelings.

Tsui Hark, Yuen Bun, Jet Li - the "holy trinity" of Dragon Gate 2

Even more important is that Tsui Hark is also known as a courageous director who refuses to be constrained by tradition and is constantly in search of new creative ways to embody his ideas and beliefs. He values his time, strives to challenge traditions and personally create these traditions. For example, “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” this is the first Chinese film in the format IMAX 3D. Tsui says that this technology has greatly helped him develop his directing skills.

In addition to famous movie stars Jet Li, Zhou Xun и Chen Kun, Tsui in his new film he involved young actresses such as Li Yuchun и Guen Lun Mei. The newcomers may not get much screen time, but their presence can attract younger viewers. As for experienced actors, then Chen Kun, who starred in two roles at once, played much more convincingly Jet Li. The latter's fighting skills are, of course, impressive, but when it comes to demonstrating the humanity and gentleness of his character, then Lee can't cope with this.

Creativity Tsui Harka can also be seen in the variety and originality of the weapons he issued to each character. Some weapons have been specifically designed to enhance visual effects using 3D technology, because IMAX On screen they are a magnificent spectacle.

In general, the focus is more on form than substance. Tsui Hark, certainly knows how to make his film interesting, with plenty of comic and breathtaking 3D scenes As for recreating the essence Osia, then the audience will have to strain their attention so as not to miss it. But since it's a film Kharka is designed for the tastes of modern viewers, which means that in the end he is not the only one to blame.

On a scale from 1 to 10 film “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” deserves 7 points.

I just watched this film, and unfortunately I can’t say anything good about it. Boring, uninteresting, very bad.

Gareth Evans watched the film in 3D:

Something is clearly wrong with the perspective; in close-ups the faces are elongated, and in medium shots Jet Li looks very tiny.

I don’t remember exactly, 30-35 million somewhere. Jet alone was paid 12 million, but some reviews write that he is absent from the frame for half of the film...

I'm afraid it won't pay off, I got off to a weak start
