Review of Tamil action movie Mugamoodi (Mask)

Anand is a young fighter who has been dubbed "Bruce Lee" by family and friends. However, Lee spends all his time with friends and constantly gets into fights. When one of his fights nearly lands him in trouble with the law, he attracts the attention of Shakti, the daughter of newly appointed police chief Gaurav.

At the same time, a gang of robbers is causing complete chaos in the city. Lee, falsely accused of assassinating the police chief, learns that his best friend has been murdered. Finding himself in a bind, Lee decides to use his knowledge of martial arts for good. With the help of his grandfather, Lee creates a special suit and becomes known as "The Mask".

As the popularity of "The Mask" grows, so does the resentment of the robbers, who, as it turns out, are members of a martial arts school. From his teacher Chandru, he learns about a secret connecting him with the robbers. To stop the outrages of criminals once and for all, Lee must learn a new style, and soon he becomes the only hope for the residents of the city.

The most interesting thing about this almost three-hour film that combines action, comedy and melodrama is that the producers dedicated it to Bruce Lee. It is quite possible that the greatest inspiration came from recent films related to Lee in one way or another. The most striking similarity with the 2010 film “Fist of Legend: The Return of Chen Zhen” is due to the main character, a kind of average masked superhero who knows kung fu. The second film is clearly Ip Man (2008), in which Wing Chun was identified as Lee's original style, and in which Tony Leung Hsiu-Hungg acted not only as a choreographer, but also as a production director.

Leung and his stunt team did a thorough job. The lead actor may not be a martial arts expert, but he looks quite capable as an on-screen fighter, and it's clear that the effort he put into training was well spent. Despite the obvious use of cables, there are no problems with the action (and here, as already mentioned, Wing Chun was used).

The only and main drawback of this action film is the obligatory presence of a love story, so inherent in Indian cinema. In this case, the romantic relationship between Lee and Shakti is not only drawn out in places, but it also feels as if it doesn’t exist at all. Then it is best to use “rewind”.

"The Mask" is a film that causes mixed reactions. On the one hand, there are actually non-existent romantic relationships in it, on the other hand, there are fight sequences, which for the most part “draw out” the film. You can rent it, not forgetting about rewinding the “sloppy” melodramatic scenes.

May the copyright holders forgive me, but the entire film is on YouTube, so there is no point in posting the trailer.
