Review of the film Yamada: The Samurai of Ayothaya

In a blood-soaked historical action adventure “Yamada: Samurai of Ayotaya” (Yamada: The Samurai of Ayothaya) met in battle Muay Thai and samurai swords.

“Yamada”, embellished with beheadings, breaking bones and copious amounts of blood splatter, is actually based on the true story of how a samurai warrior became one of his personal bodyguards King Naresuan the Great.

Actor and model Seiji Ozeki (Seigi Ozeki), who lives in Thailand, embodied on the screen the image of the main character named Yamada Nagamasa (Yamada Nagamasa), who lived from 1590 to 1630 and served in Ayutthaya in the courts of four kings during the reign of the dynasty Sukhothai. He was subsequently made a lord and became governor of the province Nakhon Thammarat.

The film was directed and executive produced by Nopporn Batting (Nopporn Watin) in honor of the 124th anniversary of Thai-Japanese diplomatic relations. Nopporn Batting, among other things, promotes various events related to Muay Thai.

With stoic determination, as if Neo of “Matrix”, Seiji in the role of Yamada literally “mows down” in droves endless streams of black-masked ninja and Burmese tribesmen, but this happens only after he has studied Muay Thai.

Review of the film Yamada: The Samurai of Ayothaya

Refugee from warring feudal Japan, Yamada tries to start a new life in Siam and ends up in a Japanese settlement in Ayutthaya. But in Siam, which is still at war with the Burmese, there are also people who long for his death. A bald dude with a goatee sends in heavily armed men. ninja with the goal of killing a samurai in a dark alley, but the men in black are sent to the next world by four fighters stripped to the waist Muay Thai. They transport a wounded warrior up the river to their peaceful village in Phitsanalok.

There's a shy young girl Champa (Kanokkorn Jaichuen, Miss Thailand 2007) heals his wounds, and a sassy girl named Kratin gives him a nickname “Na Khao” (White-faced).

Immediately after recovery Yamada strives to prove himself among the locals, but finds that his Japanese martial art is no match for the eight weapons Muay Thai - fists, feet, elbows and knees.

Therefore, he decides to begin training under the guidance of a Jedi Master, an experienced actor. Soraponga Chatri, reprising his role as the wise warrior monk from the films Naresuan director Chatrichalerma Jukola.

This is how vague scenes of training appear before the eyes of the audience. Muay Thai against the backdrop of the ruins of an ancient temple.

With sacred tattoos on his bare back and chiseled chest, the long-haired samurai decides to join a group of dark, mustachioed brothers with mohawks - his personal bodyguards King Naresuan.

Role Naresuan, by the way, plays the star of the film “Young Love Nak” Vinay Kraibutr.

It is also worth noting attention to the language - Yamada and his goateed nemesis speak Japanese with English and Thai subtitles. The tough Burmese villain's conversations are also double-subtitled.

Review of the film Yamada: The Samurai of Ayothaya

The film is reminiscent of recent Thai historical epics like “Suriotai”, films about Naresuan, “Bang Rajan” и “Ong-Bak 2-3”, where brutal, bloody violence alternated with calm, formulaic scenes of ancient Siamese pomp - rowing boats, bathing elephants, masked dancing, etc. – in addition, with playing the Japanese flute.

Yamada falls in love with Champu. He gives her his heart, and his sword - a katana with a razor-sharp blade and a handle made in the Siamese style - gives it to her brother Kamu (Tanavut Ketsaro). The blood of defeated enemies cemented the bonds of friendship between the two.

Scenes from Muay Thai staged cleanly, with a small amount of stylization in the form of slowdowns. The ancient form of Thai martial art appears before the audience in all its glory.

Sword fights, with gallons of computer blood and digital blades piercing bodies and cutting off heads, have a darker look and take place in forests or in the dark.

In fact, the audience laughed at the bloody action, due to which the film was not given a “G” rating (for all ages), because the “tricks” in the style Indiana Jones (sword versus pistol) were repeated several times. Yamada, defiantly taking a Japanese fighting stance, immediately received a powerful elbow blow to the nose from the master Muay Thai, whose role was played by a real fighter Buakhau Po. Pramuk (Buakaw Por Pramuk). In another episode Yamada qualifying competitions are taking place to select future bodyguards King, and there he encounters a giant (Somdet Kaeu-Ler), clucking like a chicken, waiting to smash the little man from “Ippun” to smithereens. But the prankster is quickly silenced. In the third scene, the bodyguards come face to face with a band of brutal Burmese invaders carrying heavy blades, hammers and axes. One of the jungle warriors slightly resembled Tony Jaa. In battle, he danced, skillfully twirling his sword, but Kam unceremoniously released his guts.

As a result, Yamada returns to that dark alley where he was almost killed and again comes face to face with the army ninja and that bald guy with the goatee. The guy has no hair, however, the character is quite memorable.
