It’s the same thing, don’t go to a fortune teller here.

It seems to me that the site still needs a forum. Although these discussions are quite monotonous, they spontaneously arise as offtopics here and there.

They could be varied, but the site format does not always allow this. Perhaps if there is a forum, it will become more convenient. True, it seems to me that the composition of those discussing will be the same.

if we take a full-length film: there are no guarantees that Eric is capable of filming something worthwhile (at the level of his Groundhog) in this format,

Celpaso, there is such a danger, I agree. Let’s just say that I expected more from his full-length “Death Grip”; in places there is a strong sagging in the narrative, but this is immediately obvious only because of inexperience. Only because there is no experience. But despite this, the film came out with its own atmosphere and turned out to be far from worse than the vast majority of films in the heat of fighting games released in the last few years. Jacobs and Adkins may try to team up with an experienced director. Yes, even take the same Peter Hyams as a consultant. But take control of editing, storyboarding, camera work and action staging. And the plot. We need a plot. Jacobas is able to come up with at least a plot and some vivid details. And look for a screenwriter. It may take longer than usual, but something new will come out. And Adkins won't turn into the next Steven Seagal.

Would work with Eric Jacobas, Dennis Ruel or Johnny Nguyen. Would have worked more with Kane Kosugi or Jung Hoo Dong from South Korea.

He wants to work with Kane Kosugi again, and for his character to have a lot more screen time. Everyone else (including Kane), as you rightly said, just like Ja...is worth little without good directors (choreography, cinematography, editing, directing, etc.).

Let's take Eric. He is the only one of the above who not only acts in films, but also films. BUT he is good in short films, and it is his latest works that are truly good, of which the most recent one stands out, which can really be shown to any viewer, even a not-so-fan of action, and it will hook him (although they dragged out the final battle a lot) .

Scott, I think, could star in Eric's short film and that would be cool, but I understand why he's unlikely to do it. There is a high risk of getting a serious injury due to which you can lose your full-time job (i.e. money)

If we take the feature film: there are no guarantees that Eric is capable of filming something worthwhile (at the level of his Groundhog) in this format, BUT even if he is capable, no one will give him the money he needs for the film with Scott in the title role, and Scott is not the right level of star at the moment to set conditions for producers and studios in the style of “I only want to work with these guys and that’s it.”

he needs COMEDY! Good action comedy.

I agree (and judging by some interviews, Scott agrees with this), but here the problem arises of DTV films, in which action comedies are a VERY rare genre (Gringo was supposed to be something similar, but already when they started filming, the script was cut and they cut out exactly... the action and comedy =)

Generally speaking, Adkins needs not so much comedy as CREATIVE in general. He never had any creativity; he was always used in the same scheme. Tim Man was never a creative person; he was always a craftsman.

For example, in the same NINJA 2 there was a good scene in an open-air bar. BUT again everyone attacked in turn, showing us how cool Adkins is.

Jaidiev, why was this scene in the film even filmed? Show how anger overwhelms the character? This is very weak because it was actually filmed just for the sake of the fights. The emphasis should have been placed not on fights, but precisely on the transformation of the character. And this most banal and disastrous, in my opinion, dialogue: “come on, hit me even harder!” You can’t shoot like that, it’s just the Stone Age already. There was a moment when Scott's character throws one opponent, there is a slight pause, and Adkins turns to another opponent, and Scott's face is completely flat and blank. Well, Christmas trees. I would take a close-up of the face and ask Scott to convey the anger, pain and that same emotional breakdown. To do this, of course, Adkins needs to be able to do this. And there would be no need to film this dialogue: “hit me!”, a la Bloodsport.

Author's gravatar

Personally, I liked the idea of Scott working with Jacobas. Scott has had many serious roles, but my personal opinion is that he needs COMEDY! Good action comedy. Then he will show himself from a completely different side.
He's kind of tense all the time.
As for the battles, look at the situation:
Scott has great physical abilities, while Jackie has average ones. But again the same Jackie, more interesting than Scott. And it seems to me that if a good fighter were offered to stage and carry out street, sweeping fights, it is unlikely that he would do it. What's the point of spending years of your life polishing your technique, so that you can later merge it all into the frame? But what’s surprising is that a kind of street technique works in the frame for the viewer. Remember OPERATION CONDOR. There were professionals there, but they looked like street fighters and it looked cool.
I had a case the other day.
We were developing choreography for one fight and I invited specialists from Thai boxing. We began to work, after which they were surprised at the moment that they did not need their sharpened preparation. They asked - Why then did I take them if I just needed a flywheel?
I answered - I need a Thai makhalovka! To which they replied that all this is complicated and a little pointless.
What am I ...
A fighter will always remain a fighter. But the problem is that his range will be repeated over and over again if he does not play up his potential with situations.
For example, in the same NINJA 2 there was a good scene in an open-air bar. BUT again everyone attacked in turn, showing us how cool Adkins is. Well, I'm already sick of it, to be honest. I sit and look calmly at this whole thing. And then I watched this movie and forgot about it.
As for the RAID, again.... really weak implementation. I would like to see not only invented battles, but also well-acted, filmed and, of course, edited ones.
And as they said above, we need to change. Get away from these slums, factories, special forces and other limited nonsense!
Then the movie will be completely different.
Remember the discussed hmm...topic, how the guy went for a loaf... Simple and everyday.

And also, regarding eggs in profile and monotony: Adkins’ hero in Ninja 2 is, in fact, the same thing that he played in Unisol 4. The character is in the same circumstances, with the same drama, with the same motivation, with the same person. SPOILER! He even followed the enemy into the jungle and to a secret base in exactly the same way...

Author's gravatar

the quality of the fights, which, no matter how high-quality they are, IMHO are marking time. It's all polishing the same thing. Each new film is the same eggs, only in profile.

Do not work with Tim Man, because despite the fact that he is extremely efficient, he, alas, is monotonous. May Man's fans forgive me: for Man now working with Adkins and Florentine is clear progress, but for Scott now working with Man is a regression.

Oh, alas, I agree!

Malaysia with Gareth: Scott will most likely play with Gareth in the next year or two, but his Raids are not particularly praised here

No need for everyone. The first "Raid" is cooler than the second "Ninja". And let's look at the second "Raid". And Yuvays has grown well from “Merantau” to “Raid”, and in the teaser of the second “Raid” he looks even more mature.

And Tony has been going downhill since 2005. Although the Thais still have more than one Tony. And maybe he will make his way to Hollywood.

So yeah, I agree that Hollywood (career) or Jacobs (skill) would be a good choice for Scott.

Author's gravatar

Small tech. info from Evans: the film was divided into 20-minute parts for post-production. It should end on January 18th.

I got a little excited about the Chinese. Of those who are filming in China and Hong Kong, Colin Chow (although he is not Chinese by nationality) is the one who arouses interest, but, alas, has been exploited lately in all sorts of incomprehensibility. I would like to see Scott in the same fight with him.
Oh, and about Gareth Evans. All I like about him is the final fight in “Merantau”: the fight with the extras and against the main villains. "Raid" was terribly disappointing. The idea is awesome, the implementation is perfect.

Author's gravatar

Celpaso, in this case, if I were Scott (although I, of course, am not in Scott’s place)) I would choose “career growth” rather than the quality of fights, which, no matter how high-quality they are, IMHO are marking time. It's all polishing the same thing. Each new film is the same eggs, only in profile.
Who would you change the team for? Would work with Eric Jacobas, Dennis Ruel or Johnny Nguyen. Would have worked more with Kane Kosugi or Jung Hoo Dong from South Korea.
Under no circumstances should you work with the Chinese; now, IMHO, there are few who could be useful or interesting to Scott. Do not work with Tim Man, because despite the fact that he is extremely efficient, he, alas, is monotonous. May Man's fans forgive me: for Man now working with Adkins and Florentine is clear progress, but for Scott now working with Man is a regression.
Thailand? Thailand wants to get out of the cinematic swamp and return to its former glory, so the Thais will not make high-quality action now, they will strive to slap Hollywood-oriented action films with an eye to the box office. Working with Tony Jaa? Tony Jaaon his own, without a team of directors, choreographers and other retinue necessary for him, is not very wealthy.
And yet, I would really like to see Scott in a very serious action film, meaningful, dialogue-driven, dramatic, with suspense and tension. A hero must always overcome obstacles. He must always be in circumstances that are stronger than him, that twist him inside out. Otherwise, I don't feel sorry for him. And if there are no such circumstances, then why fight at all? Scott's hero needs to be in precisely such circumstances, at the limit of his strength, capabilities and emotions, then his talent as an on-screen fighter will reveal itself. Who watched Ninja 2? Does his hero look like a heartbroken man, thirsting for revenge, seeking justice at the limit of emotions? Nevermind. It looks like an armored train.

Author's gravatar

I agree. And he won’t jump unless he changes the team he’s working with, including the director.

Who can he change it to? The best that Scott gave in terms of fighting and the only films where he was allowed to develop to the fullest in terms of fighting were Isaac’s films. (although I also like his fights in Unisol, where the style is completely different than in Undisputed or Ninja). So I'm not surprised that when it comes to low-budget fighting games...he's happy to work with Isaac rather than anyone else. For example:

Hollywood: I don’t think that in Hollywood blockbusters, in which he has a chance to shine like Fast and Furious 8, Rise of Cobra 3, or in more realistic films where they like to wave around like Mission: Impossible, Bonds/Bournes, they will film fights with him better than at Isaac's. So this can be a leap upward only in terms of career growth, but not in terms of the quality of fights.

China: he worked with them and was not allowed to wave properly in any of the films (Jackie got cut, and Mask 2 is absolutely absolute hell). A film with Wu Jing will be released this year, we’ll see what happens here. + The Chinese love to fly too much, and among the realistic ones... the same Donny... somehow didn’t impress everyone very much with his fights in Special ID.

Malaysia with Gareth: Scott will most likely play for Gareth in the next year or two, but his Raids are not particularly praised here, so I don’t think you want to change Isaac’s team for him. =)

Thailand: to be honest, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, BUT the Thais, apart from a couple of hits with Tony, have not made anything very cool + they now have problems with the government, it is not known how this will affect their film industry.

PS I rewatched UNDISPUTED 2 the other day.
This is the BEST thing that happened to Scott. Then there are continuous repetitions! He hasn't jumped any higher yet.

I agree. And he won’t jump unless he changes the team he’s working with, including the director.

Jaidev, what do you think about the first Raid? Don't like it at all? Not a little bit? Simply, this is the first negative (hateful) review about Raids for me.

- Not that I don’t like it at all.
Personally, I have formed a strong opinion that any film, regardless of genre, must be well made. Films of the “action” genre, as a rule, always lost in the plot. Yes, in principle, God bless him...with this plot. The main thing is that there are powerful components. What are the components in a RAID?
The first thing I personally hate is the shaky camera! It cancels out all the efforts of the actors, stuntmen and choreographers. Many people now say that this is a style that is close to the feeling of reality. Rave! There used to be a lot of great films where the camera was stationary and the action captivated the viewer. Now this is simply unprofessionalism. Those who are generally contraindicated from making films have flocked to the cinema. The naked eye can see that the creators are not sick of cinema. And film, after all, sees everything and remembers everything. The whole mood with which the work was carried out. Can someone explain to me why there was blatant camera shaking throughout the entire film? Did it add effect? No. Didn't add!
Look how ARMOR OF GOD, MIRACLES, DRAGONS FOREVER, CAGE OF THE TIGER 2 were filmed. And what... is worse? Not at all. Even much better. In general, there is no operator in RAID!!! This killed 50% of my impression of the film.
In many places I liked the choreography, but again, the aforementioned cameraman ruined everything with his “efforts.” In some places there were simply crazy things, for example, when the main character threw the enemy into the flight and he landed on the end of the stair parapet with the help of a front half somersault. That was tough! In a good way.
There was a good scene in the laboratory, but again the main problem! Which no one has solved yet. I have talked about this and will continue to talk about it - EVERYONE ATTACKS IN TURN! And sometimes they attack like this - I’m like running at you, and you hit me... I’m all open... let’s hit, I’m ready to take the blow.
Excuse me, is this pornography???
Speaking of choreography. I am always FOR a “logical” statement. But when, excuse me, a pinwheel or some kind of hammered feint flies into your face out of the blue, I don’t understand it. What's the logic? Show off? Fine. But they would have done it so that there were all the prerequisites for a cool feint. Is it really that difficult?
As for the characters, they are all gray. There is no one to single out. Again, remembering ONG BAK, I can highlight Mad Dog, and Toshiro and Pearl Harbor... They were all different and different from each other. + They had a certain charisma. The negative character in the tattoos was oh, what a type! A villain with a pierced throat... hmm... I haven’t seen that. There are many interesting features that were later imitated. What's in RAID?
Look at the main character. For me personally, he is very unconvincing. It's like Adrien Brody in PREDATOR. He is a pianist, no matter how pumped up he is.
Perhaps in a few years Iko Uwais will become someone significant, but for now, alas... And this is not only about fighting qualities. You need to have an interesting face and charisma. You don't have to be handsome. Look at BeBel, Celentano, Willis, Cassel... Handsome? Debatable. But what actors!
Where is the emotionality of the characters? It seems that they are simply fighting, as if in sparring, with absolutely no desire to attack or defend themselves.
And most importantly, I don’t see the purpose of why this was all filmed? Purely for profit? I agree! But then I gave up. I really don’t like such goals. Jackie, Sammo and Bruce also thought about profit, but at the same time, they thought about how to surprise the viewer. And they did it very professionally and competently.
Personally, I don't consider my review negative. Cinema should be beautiful, bright, spectacular and exciting. Everything must be done correctly. Imagine if you started eating a delicious cake on a roller coaster. What will happen?
That's what will happen! And I am against this kind of entertainment.
Tell me at least one striking detail in the RAID that evokes imitation. None!

PS I rewatched UNDISPUTED 2 the other day.
This is the BEST thing that happened to Scott. Then there are continuous repetitions! He hasn't jumped any higher yet.
And by the way, it was filmed very well!!!

Jaidev I would compare these two films like this.

One musician plays with all his might to please the audience (Ong Bak)
And the second musician plays with complete freedom, for himself (TYUG)

In any case, the listeners (that is, you and me) were satisfied.

Author's gravatar

Jaidev no. I always compare it with TUG. These are the best fights so far IMHO.

I agree on some points. Because the battle with the “bicycle gang” is for me almost an example of modern action. True, again, my preference for Jackie probably played a role here, but still...
And the limb breaking ending is awesome! But... there is one BUT.
The fighting in this film isn't exactly strong. In ONG BAK one could feel real power, but in TYUG they were still a little slack.

Can't be. “Bata Lup Pak” translates to “foot touches face”, and in Siam/Thailand it used to be that touching a person’s face with one’s foot was a great insult. In the film, Tony's opponent first harassed the Thai girls, then shouted "Fak Muay Thai" (not just "Fak Yu"), so the filmmakers chose this particular blow and not any other, i.e. Jaa responded to the insult to the Thai people and Thai martial art with another insult...

Something like that.

Oh, very interesting! And the fact is that it hooked! This is the main thing about the magic of cinema and the skill of filmmakers! Well done! And strangely enough, no matter what new things are shown or filmed, we always compare them with ONG BAK.

Flew and flew away)

Once again I draw your attention to the South Korean film “Nowhere Man”. There was a trick built on exactly the same principle - the hero jumps out the window, and the operator with the camera jumps after him. That's where this shot was taken cool. It would seem that the shaking is also present, as without it, because the camera is in my hands, but it turned out tense, dynamic, because without gluing, I really like it. liked.

I remember this trick. Everything was filmed beautifully... and I remember how you advised me to watch it. A great movie! Despite the shaky camera. Because I was immersed in the story of the film, and to be honest, I had no time for technical data. And that's great!

As for the shooting, a 4-minute scene without editing with TOM YUM GONG is still the standard of a good fighting game. Let someone try to jump over it. Otherwise... they are experimenting... with what?

As for the shots with the bat. It's not even about striking, but about the situation as a whole. Remember Bruce in ENTER THE DRAGON, how emotionally he beat up the dude in the dungeon with chopsticks. That was tough! Filmed without any pre-production and played with a bang!
As for the final battle in RAID 2, no matter how hard these characters strain, it will still only result in a fight and nothing more.
Remember the legendary one-on-one fights in the DINNER, DRAGONS ARE FOREVER, CITY HUNTER... There was always not only an atmosphere, but also a story. One-on-one fights were always diluted with something, because the creators thought about the viewer and created the situation. In addition, there were always charismatic characters who aroused a certain sympathy among the viewer. And now everyone thinks that we’ll film the fight and the people will pour in. How...

What did not like:
1) The timbre of the voice-over and the amount of text. There is a lot of text, but I would like less, but drier and more emphasized. And the voice is more voluminous and lower in timbre.
2) Musical accompaniment. I love symphonic music, but in this case it was not combined with the visuals. There was an imbalance. They wanted to emphasize the epic and dramatic nature of the events, but in the end, on the contrary, they only blurred the dynamics and tension. It didn't hit me.
3) I agree about the “stroking with the bat”, but I also agree with Evil that the lack of voice acting on the blows creates such a strange effect.
4) Some kind of enticement was missing. Even the final shots couldn't save it.
5) The jump through the window failed.

What I liked:
1) More budget, more freedom in locations and extras.
2) Despite the shaking hands of the operator, there was a variety of angles.
3) I’m glad that Evans still makes the kind of cinema that he himself wants and tries to experiment.

And of course, Happy New Year everyone!!!

You can't please anyone right now. Everywhere they find some kind of flaw.

Jaidev, do you think this is trash, a disgrace? This is not the film itself or even the full trailer. Isn't it too early for such criticism?

It's not a flaw. I agree that you can reach......you can even reach the pillar.
The video did not evoke any emotions. In terms of the first part of the video, some kind of mafia show-off. In the second part, the incomprehensible and incomprehensible in the form of action. If you wanted to show something tough, then there’s nothing. If you wanted to show off your choreography, then it’s not there either. Atmosphere? Debatable. The operator is again terrible. In any case, there should be something enticing in the video.
Remember in ONG BAK there was a fragment on the fight, when the dude threw a fak, after which he received only a direct (but what a!!!) blow... and the audience at first screamed, and then fell silent.
This is the lifting effect.
And you believe it. Believe in a hero! Tony Jaa looked convincing and I wanted to watch further.
As for REID, the director himself personally does not inspire confidence in me. He doesn't care for good, high-quality action. + is absolutely not sick of some movie gadgets, a la RODRIGUEZ. He's always coming up with something. Well done!
Iko Yuvays has not stood out in any way since the days of MERANTAU. They tried to “mow” under Tony, but where was it... No charisma, no unique data.
In general, everything is terrible and I repeat once again - SHAMEFUL!
This is with great capabilities of the equipment being removed and the personnel involved.
It is immediately clear that the film does not pretend to be artistic. And if so, then please create an atmosphere of good action. But where is it? Good action can only be produced by the masters and talents of their crazy craft, and Gareth is by no means one of those. But in vain...

from a two-minute trailer, give half of it to the bazaar and at the end give out incomprehensible action. What is this? for Indosinians? Usually they put the best moments in the trailer and that in the film I will listen to all these conversations? The teaser was better. I hope for the best.

Will Prakoso be Mad Dog's brother or father?

Evans once shared the concept for the teaser. He said that in Berandal the “second Mad Dog” will be Cecep Aarif Rahman. He plays the role of a silent assassin of the highest class (his specialty is the Indonesian karambit knife), whom everyone calls him “the killer.” :) By the way, Cecep is not only an expert in silat, he is also an English teacher.

Evans said that he does not intend to make a film with BI without Rukhian. Berandal's script was written before the first Raid, and Gareth always wanted Ruhiyan to play the role of Prakoso. This character is the leader of the Krim assassin team. Boss Bangun, specializes in machetes. Has nothing to do with Mad Dog.

“It’s clear that a lot of things didn’t make it into the trailer. 4/5 of the action scenes in the trailer are completely missing. In addition, I wanted to place less emphasis on cruelty, so it was possible to post a version without age restrictions. The final shots are just a “temptation” "Watching this fight still gives me goosebumps. Iko and Cecep gave it their all for it."

Evans on the trailer and film:

"When I woke up, I immediately found a lot of amazing reviews about the trailer, I was more than pleased with the reaction. Thank you so much! Okay, time to get back to work!!! However, there is still a lot of work to be done. Visual effects will continue over the New Year holidays. Congratulations on Happy New Year from me and the post-production team. Nah. Action nightmare. And what he did there with the bat... It was like, “wow, look how I can do it with the bat.” He actually stroked the enemy with it, and that’s all.

Where can I watch it?

Make way for Eric Jacobas and his team to the masses!!! This is very promising!

A short film and a full film are completely different things. Eric has made some excellent short films, but this is no guarantee of a good feature film.

I think there are several reasons:

1. Haste. Evans had a hard time getting the trailer ready on time.
2. There is no sound of strikes, etc.
3. Evans fundamentally did not want to repeat himself and use footage from the teaser, and did not want it to contain plot spoilers.

PS Added a poll, let's vote. :D

Totally cheap! While there was a plot, there was hope for something interesting and intriguing. But as soon as the action began, a continuous bacchanalia began! It seems that in the wake of the first film, the creators simply stupidly decided to cut the dough. The action film was entrusted to a complete lack of talent in camera work.
Nice window trick, but what is it? The cameraman at the end of the trick fell dead from joy or from what...? Why is so much shaking paranoidly again? What a terrible light and color in the frame. Amateurs.
As for the "great" fights, where are they? There is nothing for the eye to grab onto. I watched this trailer. It went in one ear and out the other. In addition, the creators do not care at all about the emotional component of the film. Instead... look, we can do this, and we can do that. Can you?
Combat cinema will not get better as long as this “garbage” is shown on cinema screens. A shame!

Make way for Eric Jacobas and his team to the masses!!! This is very promising! And no matter how much they criticize Jackie, he is still on top. Even with your ZODIAC. At least you can watch this film (I watched it the other day).
But in general...
HAPPY 2014 to all of us!!! May this year bring less disappointments!
I'm not even talking about expectations.
Peace and goodness to everyone!!!

I really can't wait to go see this movie. By the way, does anyone know when “Honor of the Dragon 2” will be released and whether it will be released in Russian cinemas?

So wasn’t the video of Iko Yuwais punching the wall a trailer?

Of course not. It was a teaser. By the way, an American trailer will be released soon, and trailers for other countries will appear in the coming months.

I liked the first trailer better. And it’s just a lot of fun with classical music, but I hope the film doesn’t disappoint. And yes to the upcoming everyone!

Trailers have not been released until now; a teaser appeared first. I agree about the voice acting, what is happening is perceived a little differently...

The exact date of the festival premiere in America is January 21st.

Happy New Year to you too! All the best to you and your site. =)

Thank you. ;)

Based on the trailer... everything seems to be fine. But there is a feeling that Gareth will stumble, just like Tony did with Ong-Bak 2 and 3. Although I will be happy with the opposite result.

I didn’t like the fight in the mud (it’s unnecessary) and how the guy wields the bat (he hits too many times and in the end it feels like he’s stroking and not hitting)
