Martial arts master and actor Yu Hai has passed away

Yu Hai known in his homeland not only as an actor, but also as an outstanding master of traditional martial arts, in particular the praying mantis style. Without exaggeration, we can say that Yu was one of the founding fathers of modern wushu, who introduced many innovative ideas into it.

Yu Hai born on July 8, 1942 in Yantai City, Shandong Province, into a family of five children. His older brother and sister were sickly children and died early, leaving Yu to inherit the honorary position in the Chinese family of "eldest man", remaining with his younger sisters. But like his late brother, he too was in poor health, so his father sent him to his Christian friend Lin Jingshan, the master of "Qixing Tanglangquan" (Seven Star Mantis), in hopes of strengthening his son's physique.

Having gone through a very difficult path and winning several national championships, in 1966 Yu Hai became captain and coach of the Wushu team of the Shandong Sports Academy.

They Jet Li were among the first representatives of communist China to come to America and demonstrated their skills in 1974 right on the White House lawn for President Nixon.

In the early 80s, Yu's skill and charisma were noticed by the director Zhang Xinyan from Great Wall Pictures, who invited him to play the role of mentor in the film "Shaolin Temple"

The camera immediately caught Hay's powerful energy and was able to capture his skill, while one cannot fail to note his noticeable acting abilities. Rewatch his training or the final fight in "Shaolin Temple 3" and you will truly enjoy it.

Despite the fact that Yu Hai Leading a rather reclusive lifestyle, he was a guest trainer at several martial arts schools in China, promoting and improving the praying mantis style. The last film with his participation is a 2022 film "Tai Chi Master" with Wu Yue and Ada Liu.

Rest in peace, Grandmaster Yu.
