The unusually gifted child Yang Luchan is considered by everyone to be a local fool, however, Yang's mother invites him to study martial arts. Obeying her wishes, Yang goes to the remote village of Chen to learn tai chi.
In this legendary village, everyone practices Tai Chi and uses it in their daily lives. However, the villagers are forbidden to reveal aspects of Tai Chi to outsiders, and Yang learned this the hard way.
Upon his arrival in the village, the locals try in every possible way to discourage him from hunting, challenging him to fights. Using Tai Chi techniques, everyone defeats him - men, women and even children. After a serious fight and being defeated by Yunyang, the beautiful daughter of Master Chen, Yang decides to study the art of Tai Chi and find Master Chen.
But young Yang has no idea that the strange poor man who saved him during the battle with Yunyang, and with whom he became friends, is the same Master Chen. The master realizes how gifted Yang is and secretly teaches him the wisdom of Tai Chi.
One day, a terrifying steam engine driven by Fang Zijing, Yunyang's childhood friend, arrives in the village. He bribed officials to allow him to build a railway running right through the village. Yang decides to join Yunyang to defeat Fang Zijing and destroy the machine. This brave act may melt the hearts of the locals...
