Tony Jaa. Five favorite films

Tony Jaa began his career as a stuntman and stunt double, just like one of his inspirations, Jackie Chan. Working under his teacher and mentor, Thai director Panna Rittikrai, Tony was beaten and tossed around until his first role in 2005's Ong Bak (the American premiere). The film was a success with both critics and audiences, and was a showcase for Tony's acrobatic prowess and impressive organic stunt work (again, like Jeki Chan, Jaa did all his own stunts) at a time when wire work was a mainstay of films with martial arts. Two years later, Jaa starred in his second film, The Protector, which was less viewed in the States but added to Tony's roster of talent.

To the delight of viewers waiting for such films, production of Ong-Bak 2006 began under the leadership of a debutant director in 2, but due to a number of problems, the release of the film had to be postponed. Now, this month, the long-awaited sequel (whose plot, interestingly, has nothing in common with either the first Ong-Bak or The Protector) is finally waiting for its limited theatrical release and, apparently, Let's become tougher than the previous two films. We decided to ask Tony about his top five favorite films, and his answers reflected all the different influences that have shaped his career.

Ong-Bak (2005)

"Ong-Bak" is very important to me personally. It combined various types of martial arts, and the film itself introduced the world to Tony Jaa and Muay Thai. I'm very proud of him.

The Dark Knight (2008)

I liked Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker. His acting was breathtaking and his writing outstanding. The editing is also simply superb. I believe that quality editing is a very important nuance when presenting such a heroic saga.

Return of the Dragon (1973)

The main characters of the film are Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris, and the film itself features perfect kung fu fighting. These are two of my favorite kung fu actors.

Drunken Master (1979)

Jackie Chan was a true legend in this film. I watched it constantly as a child. He inspired me to study martial arts (under the guidance of teacher Panna Rittikrai).

Forrest Gump (1994)

Tom Hanks is an excellent actor, especially in this film. This is a wonderful film with deep meaning. A stunning film in which every character is truly magnificent.
