A remake of “The Hitman” by John Woo and another sequel to “Veteran”

A remake, but not a remake of John Woo's The Hitman

Last year the company Peacock announced a remake of the cult Hong Kong action film “Hitman” 1989, and that the director John Woo will return to update his work. But now new details have emerged - filming of the remake has completed.

A remake, but not a remake of John Woo's The Hitman
Omar Sy and Nathalie Emmanuel

Prouduser Charles Roven in an interview for The Hollywood Reporter spoke about what motivated Woo remake your movie:

It was inspired by the New Wave gangster films of Jean-Pierre Melville, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon, which were filmed in Paris. Thus, he wanted to create a homage to “The Hitman” in Paris, as he was inspired by these films. He also came up with the idea to make the film fresh. In the original “The Killer” the great Chinese actor Chow Yun-Fat played a hitman, but in this film the role of the hitman is played by Nathalie Emmanuel. Changing the dynamic to a female lead made the story completely different. So while this is an homage to his film, it's definitely not a remake.

A remake, but not a remake – that’s how we’ll write it. Nathalie Emmanuel, who stars in the “non-remake,” is known for her roles in “Game of Thrones” and the “Fast and Furious” franchise. Who replaced Danny Lee и Sally E from the original is not yet known, but the cast includes Omar Si, Sam Worthington и Aurelia Agel.

There is no information about the release date yet.

Trilogy “Veterans”

There was news recently about an extraordinary film at the Cannes Film Festival Ryu Seung-wan - "I, the executioner“, which is a sequel to the crime action film “Veteran” 2015, but the franchise won’t end there. In an interview, Ryu said:

In fact, I'm already negotiating with the actors. There will be a third. I already have an additional story. I would love to expand this universe and I feel like there are many more stories I can tell. Of course, there is a very important condition for all this. If Veteran 2 fails, none of this will happen. If you want to see a third one, please support this movie!

Trilogy "Veterans"

He also added about “The Executioner”:

I wanted to create something new, something new and deeper than the first film - a film that could truly leave a lasting impression on audiences. And, you know, I think I've found my way.

Typically, action films are about the sense of justice that the protagonist pursues and that the audience is made to crave. But this time I thought, “What if the movie is actually about two different definitions of justice colliding?” It can still be an action movie that audiences can enjoy, but it can also stimulate them intellectually. I wanted to ask a question through an action movie that would appeal to the masses. Of course, my first goal was simply to create a much more entertaining film

Well, since Wu himself will do the remake, then maybe it will turn out okay

The original film still looks great.
I sense that nothing good will come of this remake/non-remake.
Gender bender remakes are basically nonsense, and my grandfather is already old. Silent Night was hard to watch outside of the action; Woo lost his sense of proportion regarding the sentimental soap.

There have been rumors that Wu or Tsui Hark, I certainly don’t remember, wants to make a remake of “Killer” with ladies since the late 1990s. In my opinion, the idea is not very good.
