Review of the domestic film "Warrior" (2015) from Ravenside

It’s strange, but we still respond to the West, although it doesn’t ask us anything. Our attempts to make a new Russian cinema according to the laws of Hollywood, according to the templates of American film drama, turn out unnatural, clumsy and absurd. Is the same "Legend No. 17", tailored according to the Hollywood scheme, looked like a relatively finished work only because our country was directly related to the real events and real heroes shown, even if exaggerated and distorted in the name of audience empathy.

Martial Artist

"Warrior" but the movie, seemingly with the original Russian spirit of fist fights, turned out to be one of the most toothless remakes of the 2000s. Even though the producers claim that the film is based on the original Taste for Blood script by David Frigerio, it is clear as day that this is a remake. Eh, if only they bothered to change the name.

The question is brewing: why a remake, other than to make a profit? Why remake such a film if we don’t know how to film fights? But you could try to play on drama, acting, pathos, or anything else. But who is there... Bondarchuk, another Bondarchuk, Khodchenkova...

What is our problem "Warrior"? The fact is that the American analogue is a dense, tightly tailored and extremely intelligible film, with a clear drama, convincing acting and a convincing fighting game, plus actors who were not yet very familiar at that time. A film with naturalness. It is precisely naturalness, because despite the fact that there is pathos, hypertrophy, naivety and even stupid Koba in red shorts with a hammer and sickle, the film looks very “earthly”.

And our analogue turned out to be flat like a splint, colorful like a comic book and completely empty. Bald and angry Baluev, like a cross between Dr. Evil and Cat Basilio, a stripper wife, a recycling husband on a big truck, fighters with domes on their backs, a rap guy on the soundtrack - everything is vulgar, cheap, cardboard. Not a single character is revealed and, most importantly, not supported by at least some acting. Well, maybe the roaring Khodchenkova and the roaring Bondarchuk showed at least some acting skills (I never thought I would say this). Almost every attempt to show deep drama has failed because Yaglych doesn’t really try to act, and the son of Bonadrchuk Jr. (junior squared) simply doesn’t know how to do it.

And yes, there were small interesting branches from the plot that could have somehow saved the film or taken it in an unexpected direction, but nothing came of it. There is a lack of professionalism, the director does not know what to emphasize, the actors lack charisma, hence the lack of audience empathy. They could have shown some touching scenes with the hero’s daughter, some deeper conversations with his wife, military moments of another brother. And battles, strong, heavy, furious battles. We didn’t master it.

Yes, we can say that the Americans also showed little of the events of the past. But the thing is that the information was presented very competently and in doses. And everything was played two orders of magnitude better. Little Bondarchuk is clearly not Tom Hardy, Yaglych is not Eddlegerton. And Fedya is certainly not Nick Nolte.

What about our battles? They are completely optional, without dynamics, without inventions, without tension. Many important battles are not filmed from the beginning, without introductory shots, which in theory should set up the viewer, inserted as a background between some events, but at the same time, they do not fit well into the context. What's what, why are they? If you are trying to show that the battles run like a red thread through some important events, then they need to be edited accordingly and the emphasis must be placed. The identity of the coach is not revealed at all, and the coach himself is simply on guard, the distinctive styles and characteristics of the fighters are left out, the elements of MMA are blurred. I doubt that anyone ever thought about this. There was a theme with drums and percussion equipment, well, there was an opportunity to do something interesting... but, alas. They said "A" but didn't say "B". In the ring, someone throws someone, someone kicks someone, somehow goes for a painful hold. And the most disgusting thing is that by the middle of the film we forget why the brothers are entering the ring. They forgot about the daughter and the widow. Only Yaglych without a T-shirt, Khodchenkova in short shorts, rap and Bondarchuk.

The film goes by incredibly quickly, like a video clip: they showed the characters a little, quickly about the daughter, a crumpled training session, and a hasty fight. And all to the rap and once to “Spleen”. The transformation of the relationship between the two brothers with each other and their father is put under the knife as an unnecessary atavism, and the ending of the film is completely blurred.

Question: what was it? Clip and advertisement for Bondarchuk's son. It seems, in the Indian version of "Warrior" there is every chance. Well, let's wait "Fighter" with Alexey Chadov.

And domestic "Warrior" you can safely bypass it. As I wrote about him in the comments after the first viewing of the trailer - dust, decay and disgrace.

PS: And so that the creators know: paradiddle is not left\left\right, right\right\left, but right\left\right\right, left\right\left\left.

I completely agree. There was even a seditious thought that the film was shot solely so that Bondarchuk in the hat (unprintable name of the hat) would shine))))

As always - GREAT REVIEW! What did we expect from the film? Miracle? There won't be a miracle... there won't be! Where can he come from if there are no real specialists in his field. The professionalism in the work is simply completely drained.
    It's not even worth discussing.
But I’ll definitely watch the Indian one. It's downloaded. I want to check out this creativity on the big screen. And I can say that Akshay Kumar and Jackie Shroff are definitely more multifaceted than the above-mentioned compatriots.

Yes, I had thoughts at least on the Internet and just take a look :) But, they convinced me, I’d better wait and check out what they filmed with Chadov

I made a mistake and chose our version.
The main reason I live in Kalingrad.
The city and region are beautifully photographed, no doubt about it.
Bondarchuk is a bottom as a director, but as an actor he drags and drags, apparently he started the remake so that he had something to act in.
Yaglych (Yaglych could have been even better but he had to try to play worse) is also good,
    , like Khodchenkova.
But Bondarchuk’s son....oh gods, why, why, Fyodor, thank God you yourself are a decent-class actor, don’t you see your son’s “talent”.
In fact, it could have turned out quite well. The script should have been more carefully revised.
Add an hour to the film to reveal the characters and most importantly!!!
DON'T TRY TO COPY THE HOTEL SCENE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn, I almost got into the “drama”; the story is good, even though it looked like Shakespeare was playing instead of the Royal London, student Ryazan.
But when the “tree” hugs Bondarchuk, and you remember the emotions you experienced from the scene played out by Nolte and Hardy.
Let Bondya warn his son that actors of his caliber after death go to Sarik and Enjoy Movies.

I completely agree with the review, but I didn’t like one thing - “Little Bondarchuk is clearly not Tom Hardy, Yaglych is not Eddlegerton. And Fedya is certainly not Nick Nolte,” one can see some kind of worship of these American actors - only the director is to blame here, not forcing these actors to play, since the actors are still suitable for the role of fighters and trainer.
And if the combat is crap, then there’s nothing to watch.
Khodchenkova is not a bad actress, but she herself said: I have to play in anything, because I need to feed my family while I’m in demand.
Regarding “Shadowboxing is the best film” - this is nonsense for gopniks and is not about sports. but about a showdown between a stupid boxer and a goofy Panin, divided into three parts and stuffed with boyish quotation books. The fighting there is weak. It’s better to watch “Fan”, “Invincible” (Rostotsky), “Satisfaction”.

      uranium:

Shadowboxing is not interesting, even war is worse.

    Great review.
    Laughed out loud in places.
I’ll skip our version, but the Indian version is interesting, so I’ll watch it if it’s already out.

You could easily write it like this
    Russian film Warrior:
    1. fight staging is crap
    2. The operator is shit
3 Acting - I don’t even know what could be worse than shit. The film was based on striptease.
    Indian movie Warrior
    1. The staging of the fights is better than in the Russian one.
    2. the acting is better than in the Russian film.
In the end, the Indian film is better.
So far it’s better than the film “Shadowboxing”, but the film hasn’t been made in the Russian Federation, I hope “The Fighter” will change everything.
    Excellent review!!!

        DIV,

Poddubny is a story, there was reality in him, but here they couldn’t come up with a little of their own.

          Fantom,

Before Poddubny there was a gloomy Soviet film The Fighter and the Clown. The fight is there. the plot is the same. only + the story of a few more heroes.

      Fantom,

Can not be so. It must have been written beautifully. Aesthetics, you know.
