Review of the Malay action movie 8 Jam (8 hours)

I watched the trailer for this movie about a month ago. The hand-to-hand combat and stunts that were emphasized in the trailer really impressed me.

However, I had a bad feeling that this film might turn out to be another “cheap film.” This was because many of the recent action films produced in Malaysia have over-emphasized the fight choreography while neglecting other important elements that make a film worth watching. But I was wrong about 8 Hours.

The plot is based on the story of the last 8 hours of the life of a man named Alang (Shaheisi Sam). He was sentenced to death for murder. From memories woven into the storyline, viewers gradually learn about what happened before in his life and the motives for the murder he committed.

The script is well written and thought provoking. So far, 8 Hours is the only Malay film of 2012 that gave me goosebumps more than once. I'll describe how "strong" the script is: the annoying, horny young men sitting behind me, loudly slurping popcorn, laughing inappropriately, and constantly pointing out various plot points (as if everyone else were too dumb to notice), eventually fell silent at the end of the film." like fish."

“8 Hours” also owes its success entirely to the strong acting skills of the stars who starred there. Shaheizi Sam and Yana Samsudin (played Julia) are simply a magnificent duo. Also worthy of praise are the supporting actors, such as Eizlan Yusof and Zaidi Omar.

Additionally, it's worth noting how impressed I was by the acting of Fimi Dona and Eryyne Erynna, who played young Alang and Julia. In this case, I can say with confidence that their level is much higher than the average Malay actor. Fimi Don and Eryyne Erynna are symbols of the potential and opportunity that Malaysia can provide when it comes to internationally worthy actors.

As for the fight choreography, it contains some impressive elements. While I respect Shahazi Sam's attempts to live up to the audience's expectations, it was the clever stunts that made the film extra interesting. I still wonder where Ahmad Idham managed to find such great stuntmen.

Usually at different points I talk about such components as sound, musical accompaniment, locations and camera work. But in the case of 8 Hours, I will sum it up this way: the people who did the above are real professionals with a strong desire for perfectionism when it comes to the final result.

Leaving the cinema, I tried very hard to remember at least some shortcomings that I could use as an excuse not to give this film the maximum rating of 5 points. Don't get me wrong. But when I write a film review, my main priority is impartiality, and besides, I am responsible for my words.

My final decision was to reduce my grade by 0,1 point. This is because some of the extras showed signs of fear of being in front of the camera, which led to some embarrassment. In my opinion, extras should enhance the narrative, and not just fill the picture with their presence.

So, if you are still wondering which of the Malay films this year is worth watching, then 8 Hours is one of them.

Many thanks to Ilya for the link and video

PS I apologize for not translating the unpronounceable name Eryyne Erynna into Russian. Maybe someone can suggest the correct option?..

At the box office, the film will probably be translated as “8 Jars of Jam.”
