Review of the action comedy Here Comes the Boom

Scott Voss (Kevin James) is a nerdy biology teacher at Massachusetts' Wilkinson High School, plagued by low morale and lack of finances. The lethargic slacker is partly to blame, as he sets terrible examples for his students, from stealing candy from vending machines to constantly being late to class.

During recess, a bored 42-year-old bachelor flirts out of habit with the beautiful school nurse Bella (Salma Hayek). However, she once again refuses his advances, politely reminding him how often she rejected all his requests to go on a date with her.

The situation becomes more complicated when one day Principal Boettcher (Greg Germann) gathers the teaching staff to announce yet another budget cut. These money-saving measures mean not only that there will no longer be space for various extracurricular activities, such as debating society and field trips, but also that the entire music program will be closed.

This means that Marty Streb (Henry Winkler), Scott's colleague, will be callously fired before he can pay off the money for the property. Plus, as luck would have it, the hardworking music teacher's dismissal coincides with his wife's (Nikki Tyler-Flynn) pregnancy.

This deplorable state of affairs prompts Scott to persuade the director not to abolish the position in which his friend works. But Boettcher says he simply doesn't have $48 to pay Marty.

As a result, Scott, who has not competed in wrestling since his college days, decides to save up cash by working as an MMA fighter in the ring. With the help of Marty and a former kickboxing champion (Bas Rutten), he works hard to get himself into the best shape a middle-aged guy who spends most of his time on the couch watching TV can hope for.

This is the premise of Here Comes the Boom, a good-natured sports saga with an incredible plot that combines elements of Rocky (1976) and Supernacho (2006). Directed by Frank Coraci, the film brings out the full comic potential of Kevin James, whether it be his masked, tight-fitting fiasco or his futile courtship with the woman of his dreams.

The childishly simple plot inexorably leads viewers to the official UFC fight between Scott and a terrifying opponent (Krzysztof Soszynski), the money for defeating whom is just enough to pay Marty’s salary. Wouldn't it be great if his fellow teacher and the school band were in the audience at the Vegas arena so they could cheer on their dedicated teacher? And it would be even better if Bella’s heart softened and she appeared in the ring for a kiss at this moment of truth...

Is this success? (note: a nod to the film's original title) How about this is a subtle Hollywood redemption story in which a perennial loser turns into everyone's favorite hero, wins a cage fight, saves his best friend from getting fired from his job, and wins his heart beautiful girl!

Rating: very good (3/5)
