Review of the film “Gringo” (El Gringo) with Scott Adkins

So, thanks to iTunes, today I finally watched El Gringo starring Scott Adkins and Yvette Yates. For a while I thought I would have to wait for the DVD release.

Was the film worth the wait? I'm happy to say yes. Adkins once again proves that he is not only a master of martial arts, but also capable of playing different roles from film to film.

This is his best role since Boyka, and at the same time, to my great surprise, extremely funny, especially in the first half of the film. There is an almost manic sense of humor and a number of good jokes (Acapulco? Heading out for spring break?). It reminded me a lot of “Desperado” with the kind of “dark” humor that I like.

There are a number of excellent on-screen fights, in particular, the one in which a gringo deals with an entire gang on the streets stands out. Adkins fights his way through crowds of bandits with fighting, gunfire, and explosions, and it's refreshingly relentless.

The film's pacing is good and the character development scenes are interesting and don't slow down the plot in any way.

Scott Adkins has completed filming the action movie El Gringo

The supporting actors also show their best side: Christian Slater plays West, a policeman on the trail of a gringo, but he himself has a secret.

Anna, Yvette Yates's character, is by no means a “lady in sorrow”, and is in no way inferior to a gringo.

Among other things, I liked the musical accompaniment, it was something like Ry Cooder with a dash of Spanish guitar. If the soundtrack becomes available, it will have a place in my collection.

“Gringo” was shot well, with some outstanding cinematography: I watched in HD, so the image was crystal clear.

Weak sides? It was a little disappointing that Gringo didn't have the final showdown with Culebra on the scale that I wanted to see, but it was a decent ending nonetheless.

I hope that after this film and The Expendables 2, Scott Adkins will become a household name, as he already deserves it.

Overall, “Gringo” is a killer movie, proving that it’s too early to write off action films with an “R” rating.

Rating: 8/10

Thanks to Scott Adkins and Celpaso for the link.

Note: The meaning of the Acapulco joke is this: during spring break, many American students often come to Acapulco (Mexico) to rest and relax, so, roughly speaking, someone was “pranked” by calling him a “student” or, in extreme cases, a tourist . (I haven’t watched the film yet, so I can’t guarantee an accurate interpretation)

Well...we'll see, let's see. But all this is somehow one-sided.
Yesterday I rewatched HUNG's MISTER COOL again and emphasized that it all looks in one go. In continuous action. With a simple plot, but with a dashing cocktail of twisted chases and stunts.
It would seem... this is not the 80s, but the 90s, and yet.
What do I mean... the more I look into the past, the more I understand that there is no future!
    Why?
Because filmmakers don't look to the past. And this is very important. It is important not just to invite a star, but to invent and surprise, adding more and more cinematic flair.

Absolutely agree! Lately I’ve been revisiting things from the past quite often.

Judging by the trailer, they did the impossible with the budget they had.
