Review of the film “Boyka: Undisputed IV” from Ravenside

So what the Bolsheviks had been waiting for so long had happened, he came out "Boyka: Undisputed 4". fans Scott Adkins they rejoice: dancing, dancing, shooting in the air and all that. It so happened that at one time the energetic Isaac Florentine took over the brand "Undeniable" and made it a fairly successful DTV franchise. The very first film, also about prison battles, was directed by a venerable director Walter Hill с Ving Rhames и Wasley Snipes in the leading roles and had no relation to Florentine, Adkins and his Boyke, in Russian localization he was called "Not up for discussion". However, apart from the prison battles and the title, all the films have in common the production staff, who actually decided to develop this topic further.

The first official trailer for the film "Boyka: Undisputed"! (Russian translation) 5

If we don’t take into account the film with Rhames and Snipes, but compare films in which the character Yuri Boyka is present, then the best part, in my opinion, is "Indisputable 2" с Michael Jai White as boxer George Chambers. Rhames also played George Chambers in the first part, but it is not clear whether it is the same Chambers. Despite the trashiness, fearfulness and cranberry-ness of what is happening, in “Undisputed 2” you can feel some kind of style, despite the musical accompaniment, atmosphere, and the characters of Adkins and White match each other. The third part seemed to me somewhat boring, sterile, there are a lot of unnecessary characters and little variety, although an interesting point should be noted - the transformation of the negative and essentially secondary hero Boyka into the main and formally positive one, who ultimately becomes the head of the entire franchise .

In the fourth part, Florentine took off the director's reins, limiting himself to producing, and became the new director Todor Chapkanov, who had previously filmed some nonsense, who decided to let Boyka out of prison, let him breathe some air.

It’s just not clear where Boyka is: free or in prison. If in prison, then why does he walk freely around churches with donations, and at what strange “European championships” does he perform, if they are one on one like underground fights. If he is free, then why does he need a fake passport to leave, does he have a written undertaking not to leave, is he on parole? As it turned out in the middle of the film from his words: he is participating in the tournament to break out into the world, but into what world, what will this tournament give him? And at the end of the film it turns out that he is a fugitive. So what is this? Is he a criminal or not, where is he, what the hell is going on, why do I have to guess about everything? Although, you know, 80% of the film takes place again in underground rings, so it doesn’t really matter whether he’s free or not.

I think that during his life, Boyka crippled and sent more than one person to the next world, and, most likely, not only in the ring. But then he accidentally kills his rival (Emilien de Falco, who, by the way, also has a Russian character and this fact could somehow be played up) and suddenly repents. Particularly strange is the moment when he sees his opponent being put into an ambulance. Previously, he thought that all the crippled fighters were taken directly on stretchers to the pool with dolphins, but then it turns out that they might have a concussion or something else. So, Boyka repents and decides to ask forgiveness from the widow of the fighter he killed in the ring. To do this, he goes to Russia, to a city called Drovni (you see, what letters were inserted like that or the screenwriter fell asleep and pressed his nose on the keyboard, although in general Drovni is a sleigh). Of course, this is a seedy, gloomy place, and not the beautiful Las Vegas, you know. In Drovny, everything is run by the criminal authority Zurab, who forbids Boyka from meeting this girl, because her late husband owes Zurab money that was taken for the construction of a children's center. Moreover, Zurab turns out to be a horseman in love. Why does he need this girl, well, let him work, pay off his debt, why go crazy? If you fall in love, give them flowers, take them to the dacha. Angry that you didn't submit? Elki-palki, you are a criminal leader, you clearly have forbidden techniques for conquering. Overall, it's a completely contrived obstacle to Boyka's path to redemption and a plot crutch to get Boyka to fight in the ring.

An attempt to take Boyka out of the aesthetics of underground fighting and place him in other circumstances failed. Boyka is still a clumsy character, and he still gives out guykicks at underground tournaments to no-name extras. He still has no backstory, his inner world is rather primitively constructed, in general, even for a DTV franchise, there is no progress in the character. Yes, he became “good”, but why, why? By the way, it would be better to show Boyka before prison. But, of course, no one needs this, we need a fight. Well, let’s move on to what the entire public is waiting for, the makhach.

The only difference between parts 2 and 3 is that there were more fights, they became longer, the shooting began to speed up even more noticeably, and the opponents became less killable and more patient. It should be noted that all parts of “Undisputed” with Ekdins have an important advantage that distinguishes the film from most similar genre products - it is the perfect readability of everything that happens in battle. Angles, combinations, movements, rapids, long takes - everything that should ideally be present when filming a fight is there. But, alas, for me personally there is no diversity and fire. The battles are all the same and somehow boring, like in a comic book. Everything seems to be correct, everyone is jumping without knowing gravity like Spider-Man, spinning, spinning, and you seem to understand that the level of coordination work here is extremely high, one of the best, if not the best at the moment in this genre niche, but why- it doesn't catch on.

There is a good idea - Fight against two opponents in the ring (Tim Man и Andreas Nguyen), whose name is the Ozerov Brothers, but I don’t even want to joke about it. But if these brothers differed from each other in something other than height, it would be much more interesting. But they are no different. And most importantly, they are not very different from Boyka in style. The three fighters diligently jump around the ring with serious faces, attacking each other mainly in turns, but you don’t always understand where who is, besides, all three are also covered in tattoos, you can only tell Tim Man apart by his shining bald head. At all "Indisputable 4" This, of course, is again a festival of incubator half-naked tattooed men that will make your eyes ripple. In this same battle, the creators once again run out of imagination, so if in the last film Boyka injured his leg, here he hurt his back, which, by the way, every time stops hurting at the moments he needs.

Likewise with battles against Emiliena de Falco и Brahima Acchabake (by the way, both were doubles JCVD). These fights are very similar to each other, and by and large they are a copy of the choreography from the previous parts. Everyone moves well, everyone has good technique, but the identical staging does not allow them to reveal themselves in any special way. A similar thing happened with Marko Zaror in the last part, where the choreography of the fight largely neutralized its distinctive features.

Rђ RІRѕS, Martin Ford, whose distinctive features cannot be hidden in a bag, turned out to be just a huge piece of hulking s.. and almost the funniest and least scary of all the huge final villains in the fighting game genre. To prevent him from seeming like a cast-iron carousel, during the battle the filming was sped up in fragments (filming speeds up in all battles, but in the battle with Ford this is especially noticeable). The character’s name is Nightmare, they bring him into the ring wearing a mask and on a leash, although why the hell he’s on a leash is completely unclear, because he doesn’t instill fear, he looks stupid and banal, and even in the plot it’s not justified in the future, he doesn’t throw himself at people, does not try to escape, opponents do not run away from him in fear. So, despite the fact that he is so huge, bald, freaky and a Nightmare, compared to the classic final thugs Kissi brothers (Kickboxer, Looking for Adventure, AWOL), Matthias Hughes and even more so with Bolo Yongom, he just looks like a cookie.

"Indisputable 4" - this is not a step forward in Adkins’ career, but just another film about Boyka, which makes Scott even more hostage to one role. The film is more bad than bad. The budget was gone, the creators had no more imagination, Adkins didn’t play better, Boyka didn’t become more interesting, his tattoos were drawn crookedly and carelessly, the fighters in this film are the same, like selectively selected fish. Reminds me of the situation with "Bullet in the Head" и Uwais, when on the wave of success people begin to rush and release who knows what.

But with the finale, the scriptwriters completely canceled out all their already sluggish dramatic efforts. The hero repented, the widow of the deceased soldier forgave him and... Boyka smiled moronicly and returned back to prison to the ring to send his enemies to the next world. Well, wait for Undisputed 5.
Selyava, my friends.

    I watched the film.

Well, I agree with Raven about the film. It was already clear from the trailers that the creators of Boyka 4 had not moved forward. You get tired of monotonous battles by the middle of the film, and the plot is not interesting enough to really follow it. As a result, towards the end of the film you already want everything to end a little faster. Ford was dumped. He's just a bad main villain.

Yes, the guys on the screen are doing great spins and guy kicks, the cameraman even films it all clearly, but due to the lack of variety (everywhere), the film is not perceived at the proper level. It's a pity of course.

I agree with the review, that's all true. And to hell with the plot (although I don’t understand well what is the difficulty in coming up with a decent plot), the main thing in such films, after all, is the fighting. And here... Tiring monotony. Other “boys” fight against Boyko with his own “trademark” blows in his style. Then they would have started something like kumite with a bunch of fighters of different styles, or better yet, they would have let him into legal MMA... However, the film has already been shot and it is what it is.
The film, of course, disappointed, but I still voted for Boyko 5! Well, I like Adkins, his fighting style, toughness, charisma. Therefore, "yes" is better than "no"

Hello, moderators, why does the site swallow comments?

      Author's gravatar

Wave, What do you have in mind? Links, swear words, caps, warez - everything automatically goes to spam.

barsug, two comments without a single swear word, without a single link, without a caps, two or three paragraphs each - both were swallowed as if nothing had happened. One was made yesterday afternoon in response to Denis Sokolov, there is another one nearby, if you look, the next one, they say, what, the comment went to pre-moderation? The second one is this morning. When he was swallowed, I asked, well, where?
The comments were opinionated about Adkins' film career. The site definitely received both of them, because it transferred me to ×××.info/recenziya-na-film-bojka-neosporimyj-4-boyka-undisputed-iv-ot-ravenside/#comment-××× with an id that doesn’t exist .
And by the way, relatively recently my comment was swallowed, but now I won’t say which note.

Wave, your comments were in the trash. I can’t say why, I restored it. I hope it won't happen again.

I completely agree with the review. The film is complete crap, even compared to parts 2 or 3. The script is impossibly poor. When did Boyka become so sensitive? In the second part he completely cut off his ears. The fights are not bad, but somehow they smell of sleeping pills. All of Boyka's opponents are men in shorts with tattoos. Not a single colorful fighter - a villain or even just a villain. Florentai worked with Daniels, Worth, Genessee, Lundgren, Tagawa, Gruner, and could have invited at least someone into the cast. Yes, even Michael Foley from Kickboxer in the Desert. But there are no Bulgarian faces. Why couldn't the number of fights in the rope ring be reduced? Change locations, change the ring in the end. Back in the 90s they fought in a circle of fire or with glass. They would bring Chambers back, make them reluctant allies, etc. Martin Ford is generally a piece of shit.... some kind of (hello to the Van Damme film In Hell). If they had taken Matthias Hughes, he would still be in excellent shape and would have swung better. In general, this is the end of a series of films with this character, I will be very surprised if there is Boyka 5.

Because no money was allocated for such changes. The producers decided that it would do just fine, and here is the result

I watched Boyka, an excellent movie, the plot is not bad, cool fights, the actors perform well, Scott shows his skills, and Chapkanov’s direction is not inferior to Florentine’s direction.

I also watched “The Fourth Boyka” recently - a film in the spirit of the previous “Undisputed” films, a solid C!
From the franchise actors they could invite the one who played the authority figure Gaga - he was a good character!
The fight choreography is good, but as mentioned above, the styles of Boyka and his opponents are similar - just like in the proverb “two acrobat brothers.”
I would include some wrestler or sambo wrestler among Boyka’s opponents, so that he would “tie” Boyka, not allowing him to do kicks and sweeping blows! Or like in the movie “Bangkok Knockout” - at the end, the elderly Panna Rittikrai deliberately used special blows - in the eyes, in the throat, in the groin... And then let Boyka adapt to “inconvenient” opponents! Something like this...

It’s kind of sad...Almost not a single positive word for all the latest films, which were most anticipated. Either you need to look for something good in what you watch, or rename the site “Russian series about love info” (there will definitely be something to talk about there)

He said everything correctly. Apart from the fights, there is nothing to see in the film, and the fights, although superbly shot, are boring. On the other hand, it is better than "Hard target 2" or "Close range".

      Wave,
But you won’t get anywhere with this, and given the fact that the film will be downloaded and it won’t bring in any money at all, I think that we should stop there.

What is it, the comment was not added or was added for pre-moderation?

I don't know what Scott might drive. In supporting roles like in “The Expendables 2”, “War of the Wolves”, “Doctor Strange” and, God forgive me, in “The Brothers of Grimsby”? But there he is not allowed to turn around. There he shows very simple technique and speed, and it would be easy to replace him with any no-name, even Brahim Acchabake or Tim Man. There were so many hopes for his fight with Jackie Wu, but what was the result? Why did Adkins endear himself to his fans? Boyko and ninja, moreover, about ninja is still very debatable, because, for example, I didn’t even watch the first “Ninja” - some kind of unreal cranberry and very weak fights for Scott; and I found the second part to be a boring and disposable movie, maybe a little better than “Close Distance.” Whereas “Undisputed 2” opened up for me two fucking movie fighters at once and imprinted itself on me like a duckling for a very, very long time. Ask me which action films of the XNUMXst century I would call the best, I will answer: “Ong baki”, counting “Tom Yang Goong”, “Bangkok Knockout”, the second or third “Undisputed”, “Raids”, two or three or four films by Donnie Yen - That's practically all. The rest was not so impressive. Well, maybe some other things like “The Man from Nowhere”.
So it goes. Adkins is unlikely to beat the second or third "Undisputed", but maybe "Undisputed 5" than "Hard Target 3". And purely from a human perspective, I wish him roles in blockbusters, but from a viewer perspective, these roles won’t make me feel either hot or cold.

So I watched the film. I won’t, and I have no desire to, discuss the stupid plot. I’ll just say one thing, a lot of cliches and stupidity. Now about the battles, they tried to do something in the style of Raid, but the attempt was unsuccessful. The battles are all the same type, with a lot of the same kicks. We already saw all this in part 3 of the film. The whole film was waiting for the appearance of the “king” from parts 2-3, that he would come and settle everything positively for Boyk. But they decided to return him to prison. What well, apparently right. If we summarize the entire trilogy as a whole, then it’s not bad. But Adkins will probably remain in my memory as Boyka and Ninjay.

I haven’t seen the film yet. But I like the fights. Let them continue filming it, like Bond or Mission.
