Review of the film "Action Jackson" (1988) by NapoleonDinamitte

Eclecticism is far from a frequent guest in the world of cinema. Of course, purely genre films have dominated and will continue to dominate: if a poster, synopsis or word of mouth puts the target audience of a particular genre into a stupor, then the cold breath of failure cannot be avoided. A specific genre may allow the integration of individual features of other genres into its essence, but, as a rule, the identity is still preserved. For example, in the second half of the 80s, the action comedy subgenre emerged. Does it "Action Jackson" such?

The film's prologue hints at an action movie, the plot looks like the beginning of a parody story about a super-cop, and in places the dramatic climax is completely confusing. Thanks to a dynamic plot and a great soundtrack, the film flows easily, but the crisis of defining the genre torments the viewer until the credits. After which an understanding arises: you have just watched a film that is charming in its atypicality. The director and screenwriter chose the fourth path, bypassing both "Deadly weapon"and "Police Academy", and especially "Dirty Harry". No cliches, no laws of the genre, disappear, old world, give a fun mix. In serious scenes, the stone-faced villain commits extremely disgusting acts, while our hero falsely poses as a madman or clumsily rehabilitates an expensive prostitute; the abundance of bloody deaths does not prevent minor characters from joking and smiling; the action movie can't decide on its orientation, darting from everyday skirmishes to large-scale madness in style "Kun Fury".

We saw nothing like this in American films of that era. Where do the roots of this outstanding passage go? Nowhere? Or were the creators inspired by an equally eclectic contemporary? "When performing"? In my opinion, the second one. Hollywood has often compiled Hong Kong in smaller aspects, but here we are talking about the unwitting joint formation of a new genre. We must pay tribute to the Americans, a masterpiece Corey Yuen still retained contact with reality, but "Action Jackson" cuts off the brakes of so-called “common sense” and flies into the heavens.

Exactly "Action Jackson" - the first trash action movie in history. Before consumption, it is strongly recommended to turn off the stereotypical perception of cinema.

The name had a second translation: “Jackson nicknamed “Motor”.

I watched it five times. And every time for some reason I remember Michael Jackson’s Liberian Girl. 1980s, the "golden" era of action cinema. It's a shame Weathers wasn't in The Expendables. I also remember his series with young Brian Jennes.
