Review of the film Bangkok Revenge with John Foo

“Fight,” nurse Chanticha (Aphradi Phavuthanon) tells a seriously wounded boy in the hospital. "You have to fight."

1990 A boy, Manit (Rattawish Saksirikoon), has just witnessed his parents being killed by corrupt police officers. Manit, who was shot point-blank in the head, survives, but the bullet lodged in his skull prevents him from feeling emotions. This greatly simplifies the task for John Foo, who plays the adult Manit: he does not have to bother with acting, for example, showing feelings on screen.

The meek one beckons like no other. When Chanticha tells him on his deathbed exactly how his parents died, he decides to take revenge. Luckily, Manit has taken martial arts lessons (959 to be exact) from master Ajahn (Kovitch Vatana), so he's ready, and he gets help from journalist Clara (Carolyn Ducey) and unemployed ex-cop Simon (Michael Cohen).

Manit's methods, with his emotional dysfunction and fighting skills, are effective, although he does not use firearms, but his limbs. He fights everywhere: in the gym, in a bar, in a subway car, in an elevator, in a car.

The Thai locations add some spice, but like the plot and acting, it doesn't raise the action above average. Apparently, Manit doesn’t really value them either. When thugs bring him to an abandoned, dirty construction site for execution, he demands to be taken to a better place.

"I think I fell into the hands of the most tasteless killers in Bangkok," he says. Manitou may lack feelings, but at least he is perceptive.

I got around to it and looked at Manit with Russian voice acting.. Not a bad idea, but the details and implementation are rather weak. There are good moments, there are some good dialogues, but on the whole it turned out to be superficial, there is a lot of confusion in the production, a lot of action takes place in the dark or in dim light, often you can’t see a damn thing what’s going on. When I looked, I turned the contrast to maximum, and even then not everything was visible. John Foo, again, looks more like a model)) The film is reminiscent of many other films. Even with the same resources and actors, it would have been possible to make everything better and more dynamic and dramatic. There was potential. But if only...
