Studio Hive rep talks 'Ong Bak Tri' with Tony Jaa

What made your team take on this project in the first place?

Studio Hive: We started developing this project on Ong-Bak 5-6 years ago, long before Studio Hive was founded. The first Ong-Bak was a huge success overseas despite being filmed entirely in Thailand, and in my opinion it's perfect for a video game. When our studio finally formed its own development team, we contacted the head of Sahamongkol Film International to obtain permission from the company to develop the game.

The official website of Studio Hive states that the company creates concept art and animation. How difficult was it to transition into video game development and programming?

Studio Hive: This project is definitely a huge challenge for everyone on our team, but we are enjoying every day of it. In this regard, a completely new field of activity has opened up for us, and we, with the support of the publisher Immanitas Entertainment, are working hard to ensure that our game lives up to expectations.

Which game studios did you collaborate with before working on Ong Bak Tri?

Studio Hive: Our Creative Director Skan Srivuvan was the primary character designer for Square Enix's Front Mission Evolved while in Singapore. We worked on World of Warcraft board games. Also worth mentioning are Star Wars: Book of Sith and Starhawk. We've been working on a lot of card games for mobile devices lately because they require very high-level digital artwork.

Before you decided to go with the 2D action genre, were there any other game design ideas going on? If there were any, please tell us more about them. Also, why weren't they implemented?

Studio Hive: There are three main reasons why we decided to turn Ong Bak Tri into a 2.5D side-scroller. The first reason is the consumer market. This genre has many fans on all platforms, and reviews so far confirm this.

Secondly, this type of game is ideally suited to the strength and capabilities of our team. We don't have hundreds of people developing it, so it goes without saying that we can't make an MMORPG or a sandbox action game.

Thirdly, all members of Studio Hive are old school hardcore gamers. We grew up playing the same "Final Fight" and "Double Dragon". The games mentioned were very cool, and still inspire us in many ways. We want something similar to happen with Ong Bak Tri.

How much input did the original film's director and actor have into the development of the future game? Can you tell us more about how they worked together with Studio Hive?

Studio Hive: I think we're very lucky to be working with two great directors on this project: Tossaporn Punnart, the director-animator of Ong Bak Tri, and Prachya Pinkayu, the director of the first Ong Bak. We really appreciate the degree of creative freedom given to us. To ensure that the game would be an authentic addition to the world of Ong Bak, many meetings were held with them.

A very important contribution, both to this project and to the Ong-Bak universe, was made by one person. This is Panna Rittikrai. He is a legendary fight choreographer and is often credited as the co-creator of Ong-Bak. Guru Panna is designing the fight sequences for the game.

Tony Jaa provided us with his name and appearance for the game; later we will release more detailed information about his participation. I'm sure fans will be delighted with how accurately the game captures the atmosphere of Ong Bak.

The game takes place in ancient times, as in the second and third films. Why not in a modern setting, as it was in the first part?

Studio Hive: This game will be a prequel to the new film in the Ong-Bak series, which is planned for this year. We cannot disclose the details of the upcoming film; Sahamongkol Film International, which owns the license, will soon do so.

What will make this game different from other 2D action platformers like Outland and the Shank series?

Studio Hive: We tried to design our combo system to give players more ways to have fun with their enemies. All Ong-Baks are famous for their great fight scenes, and this will be a key component of our game.

What platforms will this game be released for? Also, when will it come out and how much will it cost?

Studio Hive: The game was developed for PC, consoles and mobile platforms. The PC version will be released first, then the version for mobile devices. We are currently working hard to complete the game, and we want to ensure that the gameplay leaves only the best impressions. The game is currently in the final stages of development; We will announce the release date soon.

Owe! Hurry up already. And immediately after the purchase, no free download. It’s worth the money.

I haven’t watched Hulk, the main thing for me is that the direction and fights/action are on the level.

I'm afraid there won't be anything Hulk-esque in the movie. There will be a path in the game. Like, within the next 30 seconds you must meditate or pet an elephant, otherwise you will turn into a dirty "zhivotnae" ... %)

Well, it's a game - anything is possible. I'm interested in what will happen in the film/films. I wonder if it will remain in this setting or if it will be a regular modern world. And if the fantasy world remains, then how will it all be implemented in the cinema, and in general this choice will be strange, because... OB3 failed.

Thanks for the translation. I didn't know the game was a prequel to the movie.
TYAG2 - either they are finishing filming, or they are still filming.

Please. At the end of the teaser, Jaa's character turns into a demon. That's what's interesting.

There are rumors that they are still filming.

Thank you for the interview, it’s very interesting, I’ll come and download it from the army. What about the TUG2 trailer? No news? Tired of waiting already, since August 2011
