2016 Action Movie Recap: Martial Arts Movie of the Year and Most Anticipated Movie of 2017

Martial arts movie 2016

'Martial Arts Movie 2016'
  1. Ip Man 3 (dir. Wilson Yip)
  2. Never Back Down 3 (dir. Michael Jai White)
  3. Kickboxer (dir. John Stockwell)

Ip Man 3 (dir. Wilson Yip)

The train from the first part stretches beyond Donnie Yen for a long time now it has obviously been saving or at least smoothing out some of his not so strong works. For now -  Yip Man definitely Ian's best and central role. If the second part was uneven, then the third came out more solid.

Despite the fact that there are cables and there is a certain contactless fighting, there is a lot of fighting in the third part. It’s group, it’s paired, it’s different - Mike Tyson, Sarut, Max Zhang. For every taste.

The creators tried to saturate the film with drama, give the main character and secondary characters a new dimension, and they succeeded. Well-deserved first place.

Never Back Down 3 (dir. Michael Jai White)

Michael Jai White I decided to continue this franchise further. Among his latest works "Never Give Up 3" stands out for its clarity and simplicity. Yes, the work of stars from the sky is not enough, but there is nothing superfluous in it, there are no vulgarities, bloopers do not hurt the eyes, in general, White can turn out to be a genre director.

Unfortunately, the final fight was a bit of a blur, but otherwise there was a lot to see in the film.

 Kickboxer (dir. John Stockwell)

The contradiction between art and audience tastes in all its glory. New «kickboxer» both disappointing and fascinating.

There is an assumption that there is a pleasant nostalgic flair from the original film, a sacred figure Van Damme, colorful casting and the fact that the film was not shot on the knees, but looks more or less expensive, did their job. And, of course, a cameo Michel Kissi. Bronze in our voting.

2017's most anticipated film of the year

2016 Action Movie Recap: Martial Arts Movie of the Year and Most Anticipated Movie of 2017
  1. Undisputed 4 (dir. Todor Chapkanov)
  2. Raid: Bullet in the Head (dir. A. Padtrutt, O. Yurs)
  3. Re:Born (dir. Yuji Shimomura)

Undisputed 4 (dir. Todor Chapkanov)

Well, everything is clear here. Of all the fighting niche actors, the “direct to video” or “limited theatrical release” niches – Scott Adkins is currently a top person, and his Bojka – this is already an internet meme and a common noun. A negative character who was reborn into a positive one and won the love of the Russian public (compatriots after all), a tattooed brutalist distributing bream and guyver kicks.

This time the director of parts 2 and 3 Isaac Florentine vacated the director's chair and took the producer's chair. Let's see what happens.

Raid: Bullet in the Head (dir. A. Padtrutt, O. Yurs)

The sensational Indonesians are back in business. The trailer eloquently says that this will again be a high dynamics of the film, a fighting game mash-up, destruction and chases. U Iko Uwaisa Comrades, there is no boring Hollywood gloss, long foreplay, political correctness and children's ratings.

This time Gareth Evans does not participate in the project and is preparing another «Raid"  and were directed by Kimo Stambol, Timo Tjahjanto people we know from the project “Z/L/O 2.”

Re:Born (dir. Yuji Shimomura)

Fans of Japanese cinema rejoice: a project with Takom Sakaguchi expected to be interesting. Tuck has had various projects, his filmography is quite uneven, but perhaps "Re:Born" would be the pinnacle of his fighting career.

Still, the Japanese differ from the Americans, Chinese or Indonesians in their approach to action: a different rhythm, different camera work, different choreography, different battle drama. But I think that they won’t leave us without the signature threshing of hands from Sakaguchi.

According to Sakaguchi, I reviewed everything I found on the Internet (I mean preparation for the mentioned film), there will clearly be something to see (did you notice how to throw a bullet using a spring in a machine gun magazine?), the fencing is interesting (different, by the way, than in the same Raid ). That's why I voted for Re:Born, and I'm also waiting for Bullet in the Head. By the way, today I found a teaser for Wild Dog with Adkins and Saror (maybe who is looking forward to it the most in 2017? :)

      Dmitriy,

There is no certainty yet that it will be released in 2017.

Somehow “films with martial arts” repeat the previous nominations one after the other. It was assumed that these were films that were not hand-to-hand action films, but simply action films, but in which there was a little hand-to-hand combat: “Antigang” there, “Mechanic 2”, etc.. And then I opened the article and thought, but not Did I miss the link and didn’t open some previous summary.

      Wave,

      That's how it happened.
I think that further on in the voting polls everything will gradually settle down.
