Summing up the results of action cinema 2020: Best Actor and Best Actress

Best Action Film Actor 2020

Scott Adkins (Ip Man 4, The Collectors 2, Legacy of Lies, Hostage, Deadly Reckoning, Max Cloud) (25%, 41 votes)

“Every year the same fishermen are carried away on the same ice floe”...

“Every year on December 31st my friends and I go to the bathhouse”...

Every year there is a surname in this nomination that I would like, for the sake of variety, not to name, but there will be no respite.

Scott Adkins - a man-steamer who caught the goddess of cinema fertility by the tail, a conveyor belt Briton, the number one fighting actor in the genre (Keanu Reeves We don’t think so, he’s from a different opera).

What else can I write about him? What haven't we said about him yet? What happened in his film career that hasn’t happened before?

A bunch of films, photocopied roles (especially distinguished "Legacy of Lies" и "Hostage"), but we’ll still voice a couple of points.

First, the “Ip Man 4” - the role is rotten, banal and formulaic, but in the finale - a fight with Donnie Yen. It definitely won’t become a classic of the genre, but the very fact that two tops clashed will go down in history.

Secondly, let “Collectors 2” did not become a further expansion of the screen role, but appeared "Max Cloud".

A very controversial and uneven film, frivolous in both a bad and a good sense, but Adkins, although he looks stupid there, shows and proves that he is not averse to developing, and self-irony is not alien to him. For a subtle parody, there was just not enough subtlety; Adkins, in heroic leggings and false stoves in the location of a cardboard spaceship, tries to be a toy Captain Kirk. Adkins looks alien and out of place, accidentally finding himself at a children's party in the role of a life-size puppet. But still, this is no longer Boyka, not Boyka at all.

Where should he go next? Nothing is clear, but very interesting.

Donnie Yen (Enter the Fat Dragon, Ip Man 4, Mulan) (16%, 26 votes).

Donnie, like Scott, also appears among our winners quite often.

Donnie, like Scott, is also no longer young, and one might even say - a veteran.

His peculiarity is that, while acting in films of a completely different level and style, he remains a mark of quality just by the fact of his appearance or existence on the screen.

About “Ip Man 4” we wrote a lot about "Mulan" on the contrary, they almost didn’t write about it, but we know what Donny looks like in the wuxia genre.

С "Fat dragon" more complicated. It’s not very clear why it was impossible to make a normal film with Donny, why this costumed artificial fat man on ropes with choreography, where the understudy is indistinguishable from another understudy, why all this is once again served with sauce Bruce Lee (although it was nice to hear familiar music, although not appropriate).

Donnie proved to everyone that he is a versatile actor and has proven it for a long time. Even “long ago” he proved that he is a great screen fighter and, perhaps, the last legend of Hong Kong fight choreography. Constant leaps in multi-genre diversity are commendable, because this is, after all, diversity and, in successful cases, progress.

But what do we, as viewers, expect from him? Probably, enough of clinging to bygone youth, it’s time to make a mature Donny, especially since maturity came many years ago.

Joe Taslim (Warrior, Hit and Run, Swordsman) (13%, 21 votes)

There is a feeling that turns into a conviction that a career Joe Taslima things are turning out more interesting than his compatriot's Iko Uwaisa. At the same time, there seemed to be no prerequisites for such a turn of events, but at some point the quality of projects with Taslim’s participation increased sharply.

He is not a master of tricks, not the new hope of action cinema, and does not show anything phenomenal on the screen. However, there is some kind of vein in him, some kind of core and composure, which is transmitted to the viewer very convincingly. This is a masculine type with a gaze, gifted with acting skills and having a fairly universal appearance, capable of integrating into different genres. It’s clear that people like Taslim are taken into Western projects on the principle of “another Asian, more or less famous at home or gaining fame here.” It was similar with everyone: with Jackie, Donnie, Tony, Iko, Jet, in general - whoever you take.

It also worked with Taslim, and besides, no doubt, a very serious project "Warrior", he got to “Mortal Kombat”about which we wrote in other nominations, and which we will obviously write about later, when the entire editorial staff of our site has looked at it.

In any case, Taslim is confidently moving into the ranks of stars, and this cannot but rejoice.

Best Actress action cinema 2020

Charlize Theron (Immortal Guard) (28%, 28 votes)

The image of Atomic Blonde came in handy Charlize Theron and "Immortal Guard", although in this film she is not blonde, there is essentially no difference.

The film, based on a comic book, suffered a lot, because the scriptwriters and concepts changed during the creation process, but in the end everything turned out fashionable, modern and Netflix-esque.

If we abstract from concentrated gender, orientation and racial political correctness, music that is more suitable is not always appropriate "Twilight" and template dialogues that are empty to the point of insanity, then we potentially have a good and long-lasting (infinitely long) story about combat immortals who change the world for the better, albeit in very dubious and petty ways, instead of building their own over hundreds and thousands of years of immortality empire. Well, oh well, chopping heads with an ax is, of course, easier.

Theron was always good with craft and charisma, so she really pulls this film out, and in general, the main idea is focused on her. She is the oldest, fights the most and roars the most.

What else is there? There are quite a few well-worn actors whose last names sound like the names of seasonings or salads (Kenzari, Marinelli), Matthias Schoenaerts, who, as always, plays restless and ambiguous characters, is a weak villain, who is in the film for about five minutes; by the way, approximately the same amount of time is allotted to Veronica Ngo. And of course, a huge number of extras dying at the hands of fragile women and fragile men.

It feels like a pilot episode for a TV series rather than a self-contained and complete feature film.

Juju Chan (Jiu-Jitsu, Crazy Bullet) (20%, 20 votes)

In 2020 year Juju Chan made noticeable attempts to move towards acting, and not just fight choreography.

So far she’s not doing it very well, but the vector itself has been chosen correctly, because increasing your acting skills always means increasing the level of the projects in which you will be accepted. At the same time, Zhuzhu is not deprived of either figure or appearance, and there is no need to talk about fighting skills - in this regard, she has something to show.

Unfortunately, neither "Jujutsu"Or “Crazy Bullet” are not successful or interesting works that would be worth talking about in more detail.

One of us showed up in disappointment, the other has nothing to shine with.

Juju was most likely nominated in the nomination due to the lack of interesting female candidates, which is quite strange, since the mechanism of female action cinema has recently been very much launched and promoted.

We are waiting for new worthy projects.

Betty Gilpin (Hungt, Kofi and Kareem) (14%, 14 votes)

Taking apart Betty Gilpin, I want to focus more on the film "Hungting", which was very well received by the audience.

The theme of “manhunting” is definitely one of the most popular in the history of cinema. Let's remember "Running Man", "Hard Target", "Gamer", "The Hungger Games", “Judgment Night” and many other films of varying degrees of cult status.

"Hungting" contains a pinch of each of these films, only itself is more intimate and rather modest in concept and budget. But this does not prevent it from being at the same time a hunter action film, a drama, a dystopia that raises various social issues, including racial ones, and generally universal ones.

And usually dystopias cannot exist without a central strong character and "Hungting" not an exception. Gilpin's character is taciturn, mysterious, and her background constantly surprises us, although the depth of the portrayal is still lacking. Moreover, this applies to both the main ones - the protagonist and antagonist, and secondary characters who appear out of nowhere. Although the trick of manipulating the audience's attention and juggling with cinematic stereotypes is not bad, when at the beginning of the film the viewer is constantly trying to understand who the main character is and who he should watch, when each new object of observation receives a bullet in the head.

Another feature of the film is a full-fledged women's fight in the finale, albeit more acting than choreographic.

The battle Betty Gilpin VS Hilary Swank showed that the kitchen is a feminine kingdom in all respects. The ending of the film leaves more questions than answers, and overall the film seems unfinished and sketchy, but it has some kind of atmosphere, including due to the strong main character.

"Swordsman" is now called "Sword Master". Taslim is deservedly in the top three. They vote for Scott and Donnie, probably because they are the most famous of the proposed candidates. It seems to me that even if these two don’t act anywhere for a whole year, they will still win this vote.

      VKontakteUser34,

Yes, it seems like we constantly post a disclaimer that voting is not a battle between fans of specific actors, but a real assessment of their film activities for the year.
