2018 Fight Film Recap: Blockbuster of the Year and Independent Martial Arts Film

Hey! We are still alive and continue to summarize the results of action films for 2018! Coming this time best blockbuster и best independent film.

Blockbuster 2018

Avengers: Infinity War (dir. Russo Brothers) (21%, 31 votes)

Possibly the least glossy and most tragic entry in the franchise (excluding the expected "Avengers: Endgame") secured first place in our voting. Short-haired, shabby Thor, bearded Cap, as if after a long hermit or binge, a love story against the background of a universal war and family dramas against the same background, dark and strict. Heroes constantly reflect, even when they fight, rethink events and smile less. Even Stark seems to joke a little less often...

The difficulty of such films lies in the fact that to fit meaningful storylines of so many characters into adequate timing, and not into serial snot, is a task of rare luck. But the battles and special effects won't stop there - the Hollywood factory works like clockwork.

I must say that it's a stupid blockbuster "Infinity War" it is not and the aftertaste remains for a long time. For some time, the villain has some kind of motivation, even if it is not worthy of a Nobel Prize, but still this is not the enslavement of the world for the sake of enslaving the world, but a “peculiar” vision of the improvement of humanity. Another thing is that the Avengers team, for obvious reasons, does not agree with such a recovery, hence the whole disco. The film ends with the inevitability of a sequel, and we are looking forward to it and hoping for a happy ending.

Mission: Impossible: Fallout (dir. Christopher McQuarrie) (19%, 30 votes)

The McQuarrie-Cruz tandem has gained momentum and is producing a high-level product. Only, perhaps, "Mummy", where McQuarrie was one of the writers, raises a lot of questions, but otherwise everything is pretty solid.

Christopher has now taken over the franchise. "Mission Impossible", having planned at least two more films and this is good, because purely stylistically McQuarrie sits in his place like a glove: he perfectly keeps the dynamics of the plot, works competently with the characters, tries not to lower the bar of humor, well, and eshken, which is still a feature this epic. At the same time, the effect of a film on a large scale and at the same time of a chamber film with a touch of more European than American flavor is created. IN “Mission: Impossible: Fallout” The legendary team “OMN” is again at the center of the action, and Ethan Hungt, like 22 years ago, commits stunt outrages. What kind of pills is this old man taking? Tom Cruise? What does he allow himself?

It cannot be said that this part of the franchise shows us something fundamentally new, but within the framework of the attraction genre and pretentious spy action film, it kills most birds with one stone.

Deadpool 2 (dir. David Leitch) (18%, 27 votes)

David Leitch, having dashed a few steps up the career ladder, continues to develop the theme of a “stupid” action movie about superheroes. He turns all the cliches inside out, exaggerates the classic features of the genre that are already inflated with pathos, provokes the viewer, manipulates the mood and generously piles up heaps of vulgar jokes. Essentially the same as in the first part, only a little looser and more varied in terms of the dramatic content of this cocktail.

Once again we have a villain with a motivation, and this again Josh Brolin, which again resolves its issues extremely radically. A brutal type with a stone face, who is worthy of empathy and does not look like either a madman or a clown. Fortunately, we have an abundance of the main clown.

Ryan Reynolds finally embodied the Deadpool he dreamed of and it’s clear that he’s sincerely excited about it.

The action is as always on the level, the age rating 18+ frees up the hands (and saws off the legs), so it makes no sense to list this riot of fantasy in detail, you have to watch it.

Independent martial arts film 2018

Plan B: Screw Plan A (dir. Ufuk Genc) (23%, 19 votes)

Stunt team Reel Deal Action has been very productive lately, and this causes both joy and fear, because creative people at such a pace are often overtaken by the “blurred eyes” syndrome. On the one hand, the guys have a lot of energy, they are young, but already quite experienced, and most importantly, they have their own manner and style. But how to distinguish manner from self-repetition and marking time?

The guys are flirting with retro styling again, which is why "Plan B" is similar to many other independent action films, and the fight choreography is an over-excited version of the Hong Kong approach. The physical characteristics of the team are simply fantastic and at the moment Reel Deal Action - one of the best in terms of fighting game craft.

But this is precisely where the main problem lies - it is still a spectacular showreel, behind which the drama and meaning are often not visible. A kaleidoscope of blocks and blows, a series of acrobatic somersaults and combinations at a high tempo - and it’s no longer clear which of the many characters are fighting on the screen, since everyone’s style is approximately the same.

Progress is noticeable - these are already full-length films with good pictures, good casting Gideon Burchard и Julia Dietze, and extras, including Heidi Moneymaker (“John Wick 2”, “War of the Wolves 2”) and Mike Moeller (“One million k(l)iks”, “Final verdict”). But this is not yet a movie in the full sense of the word.

Prison Break (dir. Jimmy Henderson) (18%, 15 votes)

"Jail break" Jimmy Henderson is a kind of sterile version "Raids". Cambodian cops in a prison teeming with escaped prisoners - such a pleasure and we need to get out of trouble. “Escape” is a combat movie in the full sense of the word, because the people in it fight almost continuously. However, what’s interesting is that with such a potentially harsh premise, the film turned out to be almost bloodless and the entire fighting game was done “dry”. It lacks naturalism and some density, but there is more than enough dynamics. All the characters worked well, and Jean-Paul Ly in particular, he also has a “solo fight”, although he clearly lacks acting skills.

The camera work is also not bad - everything is readable, there are quite long takes and stylization for long takes, which gives a feeling of continuity of what is happening: the camera competently moves from one corner of the camera to another, and we see the whole picture. Not the ultimate dream, but not bad.

It's a shame that everything could have been done much better, brighter, tougher, more interesting in terms of fighting, and in terms of plot, and in terms of atmosphere. Perhaps Henderson will prove himself yet.

I Am Vengeance (dir. Ross Boyask) (12%, 10 votes)

Stu Bennett - a wrestler with a face that could break a poker plays the role of a military policeman who is investigating the death of a colleague in a small town. And it is ruled by drug dealers from former special forces, led by Gary Daniels with a mustache that immediately makes him a villain.

The plot couldn’t be simpler, there are no unexpected twists, but there is old-school B-ness and an unkillable Statham-like main character, who is almost unstoppable by knives or brass knuckles.

We’re not talking about budgets either, we’ll keep silent about the camera work or picture quality due to the lack of them, but with the choreography it’s a little better, simply because there are a lot of fights here. At the same time, when you can kill with a pistol, the heroes fight, and when you can have a good fight, they grab hold of improvised objects and use hidden dirty tricks. Everything is very primitive and banal, but nothing is criminally infuriating, except for the periodically flashing camera. But if, for example, Comrade Seagal were in the leading role, then prepare rotten tomatoes.

Let us separately note old Daniels, who, although he does not show miracles (and he never showed them), but keeps in shape - both simply physical and specifically combat. It is from him that you can see a couple of turntables. In general, one must assume that in a good project it could have been revamped with antiquity much more decently, what do you think? Maybe next time John Wick?

Well, Bennett, as always, breaks enemies and smiles with the jaw of an excavator bucket.

“Plan B” is especially captivating with its humor. :) But for some reason the “escape” didn’t work; it seemed too cliched both in terms of plot and fight choreography.

      Alexander,

In terms of stamping, there is a problem. Apparently, they decided to simply work on the market. But I expected it to be completely dull, but there are still some decent moments. This is not a "Headshot" IMHO.

Oh, how did I miss Jailbreak? I'll have to watch it! Sterile - not sterile - but the trailer looks decent.

      Wave,

He's not bad. There they just fight and fight, and there’s never really a drop of blood.
