This is the story of a small town facing big changes. A local crime boss is buying up land in the area, abusing residents and depriving them of their income. The only thing standing in his way is a local baker and his family, who runs a small but persistent motel in the city center. Confronted by the brutal policies of the villain and his cronies, the baker and his beautiful wife try and fail to unite the terrorized locals and convince them to defend what remains of their once innocent and peaceful way of life. But luck smiled on them when a mysterious wanderer named Dao, a disenfranchised monk, appeared in the city, whose help they enlist in the fight against the bandit leader. History takes a sharp turn when the mysterious past of the Tao Master catches up with him - it turns out that he is hiding from the government, deserted from the imperial service and violated his oath. Adding to the complexity is the romantic relationship that develops between Dao and the baker's wife. At the very climax of the conflict, they threaten to destroy what is left of the city and the family.
