Garret Evans' new project - action movie Hooligan (Berandal)

After the successful premiere of “Merantau”, director Garrett Evans decided not to stop there. Having an ace up his sleeve, the magnificent fighter Iko Uwais, who also happens to be an excellent actor, he shared with fans on his blog that he intends to make a new martial arts film. The future action film, in which the main role will also be played by Iko Uwais, was given the working title “Hooligan” (Berandal).

Unfortunately, more detailed information about the film could not be found, since the plotline and other information will not be disclosed in the near future. The forums are filled with only all sorts of guesses from fans. Some have suggested that “Berandal” will be reminiscent of the cult film “Fight Club” with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, but the director denied these assumptions in his comments:

Wow, I didn't expect so many discussions. I've been offline for a while due to illness and a backlog of work - please excuse my lack of comments. I was very busy in Bangkok, where I was editing the international version of “Merantau”, so I didn’t check the information very often.

Now that the international version is ready, let me tell you a little about “Hooligan”.

I have not yet published any information about this film, except for the title and the fact that the main role will go to Iko Yuwaisu. Therefore, any rumors about the storyline, script, cast, etc., were not spread by me. :) But I read them with pleasure. I like “Fight Club”, but “Hooligan” will have nothing in common with it.

I usually keep everything a secret when it comes to writing something new - sorry, but that's how I write. If I say too much, I'll be overwhelmed with a hundred different guesses, but I promise you: I'm currently working on the storyline, and it's slowly starting to take shape.

The atmosphere and style will be radically different from “Merantau”. We will take a different path and this time there will be nothing to do with culture and traditions. The fight choreography will still use Silat, but in a new, more impressive manner. I discussed with my producer Toro that I wanted to up the ante for the fight scenes this time around, making them more entertaining and bigger. I already have one idea about this and, I hope, we will be able to create a worthy competitor to Hollywood hits.

In some scenes we will use ground fighting techniques, and in one fight the fight will be even more intense than in the fight between Yuda and Eric in “Merantau”.

Therefore, I apologize once again for not being able to share with you more detailed information about the plot. But I want you to know that I am very, very pleased that you are so interested in this film, and I hope that we can continue to delight you with interesting news about the production, as we ourselves learn from project to project, striving to create better and bigger films .

In response to a question about his illness and the presence of bloody scenes in “Hooligan,” Garrett Evans replied:

The fever has already passed, thank you, now I’m back to normal.

In “Hooligan” there will be several scenes that are more brutal than in “Merantau”. The approach to what's happening on screen will be darker, grittier and more direct.
