Mortal Kombat Rebirth. Get over here!

Overnight, a 7-minute video called Mortal Kombat Rebirth was posted on YouTube. He immediately gave rise to a huge number of all kinds of theories and assumptions. But I won’t guess; let the psychics do that. :)

I just want to intrigue you a little: Michael Jai White stars as Captain Jackson Briggs (Jax), and Latif Crowder stars as Baraka.

This video has nothing to do with the game, but is a promotional video for the upcoming feature film. The director is Kevin Tancharoen and the fight choreographer is actually Larnell Stovall.

Scorpio - Ian Anthony Dale, played Kazuya in Tekken
Johnny Cage - Matt Mullins from Blood and Bone
Sonya Blade - Jeri Ryan

Jeri Ryan tweeted:

This is not a game trailer, in fact it was made so that the director could present his vision for the upcoming Mortal Kombat film from Warner Bros. I starred there as a favor to a friend. I have no idea what Warner Bros.' reaction will be.

but it seems to me, on the contrary, it will be more interesting than these tales about fighters from the outside world

    Author's gravatar

I saw the video. my opinion, what is it? MK is something like fantasy, but here there are some killers and what is the meaning of the tournament again in money as in Tekken?

      Author's gravatar

Yes, this is just a short film, more “down to earth”, as if to say, with a new vision of the franchise. Whether the studios will agree to make a full-length film is still unknown.

    Author's gravatar

they made the reptile a freak even though he is a lizard and not a goblin

    Author's gravatar

It’s a shame that the plot will be different, but since there’s nothing else on the MK theme, we’ll be content with this

    Author's gravatar

Damn... did you play games after the 3rd part?? including MK Shaolin Monks, repeating the plot of the first two??? So, in all those that came out after the 3rd part, Reptile is the most incredible freak... all scaly... in Deadly Alliance he has a crocodile head and resembles a Lizard from a spider's head..
And Lew was already killed in the game, deliciously in the initial splash screen DA Shang turned his turnip... I almost had an orgasm... Lew always seemed painfully boring to me... And in general, according to the latest trends in the game, Lew has been a zombie for a long time... in DC vs MK are not zombies.. but there is no common sense at all, but there is Batman.. and Sisge...
So screw the game and common sense: Give Reptilian a freak, Liu Kang is gay, The Outer World is a secret organization created by the Masons, Shao Kahn is a superman created by the Nazis from the DNA of Genghis Kan... Goro is also a victim of Nazi experiments.. Quan Chi is a full-time geneticist ... Raiden is a Gulag prisoner who was bitten by a radioactive spider and then lightning e..lo, between tournaments he works part-time in the X-Men team... Damn, it's time to shoot your trailer...

    Author's gravatar

Liu Kang is a must here. Just to get him wet. He could be played by the same Robin Shue - by the way, his death in the new MK could become quite symbolic. As for ninjas in multi-colored robes - yes, this is already boring.
Notes on the video: Baraka should make the blades better and cut off the dreadlocks (otherwise he looks like some kind of Rastafarian maniac). Shan Qun (Shang Tsung, if anyone doesn’t understand; it would be nice if he was played by the same Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) could have been revealed a little better. The reptile was made to look like a complete freak, but given the new concept being offered to us, we can close our eyes to this.
But in general, I was impressed, even very impressed. So much so that it gave me strength to wait for MK3 further. We wait!

The video intrigued me, let’s say this is not Mortal Kombat for the furry fans of Mortal Kombat, which I myself was about 10 years ago... but why not..
To Jason DinALt: It’s not worth talking about the murder of the MK universe in connection with the release of this film... A game is a game - a movie is a movie.. Besides, Sub Zero, together with Batman, fighting the fruit of the gay love of Shao Kahn and Darkseid, isn’t this murder? ? The game itself has long since reached the point of absurdity, for one simple reason... Fighting games have never claimed to be the apogee of logic and common sense. People love fighting games because you can play as cool people who kill each other in a funny way...

There are already more than a dozen games in the universe, the first three are played mainly by elderly fans, and even then, we probably have even more than in America, and making a film with the plot of the first parts is absurd.. The plot should definitely not repeat the first parts and intersect with the first film.. Otherwise, why make it at all?. It’s possible to make a film based on one of the later ones, the alliance of Quan Chi and Tsung, Onaga.. it’s possible, but what for...
If you are already making a film with a completely new plot that does not repeat the game, then I personally see two alternatives:
1)... I would also like a game with such a plot :) Prequel: and a completely prequel... screw Kanga.. screw Tsunga.. considering the love of the public, why not make the film "MK: Shao Khan - The Conqueror" and what .. a large-scale pseudo-historical action movie, about how Shao Kahn came to power in the outside world and conquered Edenia, Zaterra, etc.... hordes of Shokans and Tarkans.. the budget needs 150 lemons.. and with the right approach, you can do a trilogy ala Lord of the End pull :))))
Well, due to the fact that no one will allocate money for such a thing (see above), and there won’t be juicy fatalities in the film for such money, because the producers will not agree to lose part of the viewer because of the 17+ rating...
    2) you can shoot low-budget evil trash, in which the lack of large-scale filming is compensated by the disgruntlement and inadequate approach from the series: “If you want Freddy, a killer, you have a pedophile” :))) A remake in the spirit of realism: Baraka as a maniac, Shang Tsung as a mafioso ( that the presence of hellish powers does not exclude), Riptil in a mutant is a pretty good solution... Ninjas in multi-colored robes will not surprise anyone, another positive Liu Kang will not cause anything other than vomiting.. so betting on a scorpion is also a plus.. Michael Jai White in the role of Jax, this is also a plus.. and what the hell does it matter that he’s a cop here and not a military man? about the game.. fuck you, fellow geeks...
In general, the video still has more advantages than disadvantages, of course the choreography is weak, the knives of the barracks could be made better, the fur could be shaved off... but this is a demo video shot on bare metal and not a finished film..
Let the director be given some money, the producers will make their own adjustments and let’s see what happens, and then we’ll criticize and talk about killing the universe..

Linden Ashby said a couple of years ago. that he wouldn’t refuse to star in the new part. But he is a good actor, not a fighter. Chris Cassamassa, Kate Cook and Francois Petit, I think, would also not refuse, although now they would hardly be able to repeat their past works. Age makes itself felt. The ageless Tagawa has a villainous-universal appearance, he can be shoved into all film adaptations. ;)

    Author's gravatar

Personally, I think the film will fail if the budget is more than 30 million, and the Mortal Kombat theme is far from relevant and will not cause a stir. Moreover, it is no longer possible to return the first actors, who we remember so well.

    Author's gravatar

Adkins is needed for the role not of Sub-Zero but for the role of the Great Johnny Cage. And the floss is a double for multi-colored ninjas =)

      Author's gravatar

      Also a normal option. :)

    Author's gravatar

    Jason DinALt

Setting is a set of environmental conditions, the atmosphere of a fictional or non-fictional universe.)

    Author's gravatar

Ilya, I beg to differ with you, dear colleague =)
What is normal there? What is this “under-form” from SF with two rusty switchgears and a black man, brrrrr for me this is too much. Who needs a Scorpio who looks like the “Edgar Beetle” from the men in black? Mullins, showing his “Tarzan karate” and trekking, which everyone is fed up with? Where is the voice acting, which makes up 50% of the entire MK universe? Where are the sophisticated techniques and interesting solutions to the fight, which were wonderfully demonstrated to us in the Mortal Kombat: Conquest series? After the advent of tricking and competitions in so-called “extreme martial arts” (from which Mullins himself came out), the fate of “kung fu” fighters with their full-fledged displays of one or another school of martial arts was a foregone conclusion ((Now we are forced to observe a maximum roundhouse kick and solid “pretentious” somersaults in the air =( Whoever shot this trailer was thinking about something unknown to anyone, but obviously not about the crowds of fans of the MK universe and what they want to see in the film. But the fact that everyone is chasing what’s fashionable nowadays the stylistics of “The Dark Knight” and Guardians won’t help, the spirit of MK and these films like Madagascar and Antarctica are completely different things from two different worlds.

    PS
The return of MK to the wider public will be successful only in one single case. If the film is made by a fan of the first three games, who is well versed in martial arts and martial arts of the planet. And constantly studies the fan forums on the subject of what they want to see. Then he will become a millionaire very quickly) In any other case, failure is 1% guaranteed!

    Author's gravatar

No, the battles are normal, but they were filmed in one place.

I don't quite understand what it means
"a realistic and stylish setting for today"
    What is "Setting"?
Regarding the Dark Knight and the Guardians, you very correctly noted that everyone is guided by them (even if they are not okay)

There is nothing interesting on kungfucinema.
Oops. I didn’t notice two updates :) One even mentioned me:

UPDATE: The MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH cast list includes Michael Jai White as Jackson Briggs, Matt Mullins as Johnny Cage, Lateef Crowder as Baraka, Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, and Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion. (Thanks to Evildollar.)

Thank you, the full interview with the director will need to be translated (based on it, the second update was made on kungfucinema).

It’s a shame that such a promising universe was finally buried =(
This trailer is direct evidence of this to the masses (and even more so MK will never return to the big screens) will sit next to SAW or the new Nightmare on Elm Street =( In "The Living Dead", the fight "Zombie vs Preacher" was filmed in times better!!! And as soon as White decided to show up in such a cheap trash clinic, Michael run, run before you get branded!!??? Okay, Mullins, young, hungry, just where, only for money, and Latif is also a speck I have built a solid reputation for myself.
And as soon as funds are allocated for such hellish nonsense? Obvious money laundering, a sane person would never allocate money to an idiot from the supervisory chamber to make a film =) Goodbye MK, we won’t see you again.
I can hardly imagine how one can look at such a staging of fights, after, say, “fist of legend” or “flash”.

    Author's gravatar

I agree with everyone, the video looks very promising. Will wait. :)

    Author's gravatar

If WB gives the go-ahead ahead of time and allocates money for the full-length film, the release date may shift to 2011. Otherwise, waiting until 2013 is very long and difficult.

    Author's gravatar

Who knows. If only a large company would take care of it, then everything would be OK.

    Author's gravatar

When will the film be released?

    Author's gravatar

We'll wait for Warner Bros.' reaction. and hope for the best...

    Author's gravatar

If they make a film, it will be all that is needed, for now it’s a pity that it’s just a video, we hope the company makes the right choice than to wait until they film a new part.

    Author's gravatar

Oh guys, I feel like it's going to be hot!! :) Thanks everyone for the good news! Jay White looks really cool and it’s great that there are so many fighters here... and not everyone is known yet!! In general, the creators have thrown a powerful intrigue..

    Author's gravatar

We were pleased with Michael Jai White, Latif and Mat Mullins.
I won’t rant and slander, I’ll silently wait for more news!)
I'm really looking forward to this movie! OWE!

    Author's gravatar

Hopefully we won't have to wait until 2013.

    Author's gravatar

I personally don’t care who will play there, as long as it happens as quickly as possible.

    Author's gravatar

If Scott also played, it would be really cool.

    Author's gravatar

    Song - Mortal Kombat theme)

    Author's gravatar

and what kind of girl plays the role with Tni Ja?

      Author's gravatar

This is the soundtrack to the first Mortal Kombat. It’s called: Mortal Kombat theme or Techno Syndrome. The most amazing timeless thing. :)

    Author's gravatar

Christopher Lambert is the permanent performer of the role of Raiden. I am of the same opinion.

    Author's gravatar

Yes, that would be something. But I can’t even imagine anyone other than the charismatic Christopher Lambert playing the role of Raiden.

    Author's gravatar

EvilDollaR, once again it’s not necessary.

Video with Tony Jaa- dedicated to the news youtube.com/watch?v=LrP99aUNXX0

    Author's gravatar

I agree with you. I think he'll be Jay as Jax. Michael is the best choice for this post. Gathering elite fighters in the film, including the inimitable Adkins, I cannot imagine how enchanting the film will be. This will be a GREATEST SPECTACLE. I wish Tony JA would play the role of Liu Kang. AAAA)

    Author's gravatar

George Roche hinted that he knew who could play the role of Sub-Zero, but did not want to mention his name in case something went wrong. He said that he would fit perfectly into this role.

Isn't it Scott Adkins he means?.. :)

PS The short film is interesting. I'll translate the description and post it on the site a little later. Thanks again, Azureus0102.

    Author's gravatar

EvilDollaR, No reason.) By the way, if we already touched on the short film Street Fighter Legacy, then another similar concept should not be ignored. The day before the release of Street Fighter Legacy, another short film called Street Fighter: Beginnings End was released online youtube.com/watch?v=8K-F4eCDyUU Director: Christopher Cowan, Budget: $400

    Author's gravatar

I'm glad that at least in the last few film adaptations the roles of fighters are played by real fighters (for the most part).
I hope White gets a couple of fights, it will be a shame if not...

    Author's gravatar

To be honest, I prefer Jay White. His performance with a stern gaze is mesmerizing and pure delight. Mega actor.

    Author's gravatar

Thanks for the information, Azureus0102. ;)

When the video first came out, I honestly thought it was a short film made in response to Street Fighter Legacy. I guessed a bit wrong. :)

    wu-shu, kusari-gama is really advanced. =)

    Author's gravatar

bloody Scorpio has a great kusarigama

    Author's gravatar

UPDATE: Jerry Ryan, who plays Sonya, stated on her Twitter that this is a short film for show to show WB studios the vision of the film and get money for the feature film.

It is clear that the MK universe will be rethought with a more realistic and stylish setting for today, a la The Dark Knight, Watchmen. First we were treated to a wonderful short film called Street Fighter Legacy, with a possible turn into a full-length film, and now MK is taking on unprecedented momentum. This is probably a sign that the coming decade will mark the beginning of KOSHER film adaptations of games.

    Author's gravatar

I will update as new interesting information becomes available.

    Author's gravatar

It's great that this information appeared here, I can't find it anywhere else

    Author's gravatar

I got confused with the director)

    Author's gravatar

It will be a great movie

    Author's gravatar

Who played Johnny Cage (fight with Latif)? The face is familiar, but I can’t remember the name. He died beautifully. :)
PS Wiki lists Matt Mullins. It is now clear. The guy from the final fight in Blood and Bone.

    Author's gravatar

It seems to me that this is a trailer for a new part where everything will take place in a noir world. Recently, Marvel released a new series of noir Marvel comics where all the characters live in the 30s and do not have super powers. They will even release a game.
here is the trailer for the game spider nad shattered dimensions

I saw the video last night completely by accident. :)

    Author's gravatar

This video is related to the new film. The director was the brilliant choreographer from Undisputed 3, Larnell Stovall. Judging by the video, the film will appear in a different way, radically different from the original duology.

    Author's gravatar

Hmmm. There are simply no words. Looks promising...

    Author's gravatar

:) I thought that Baraka was Latif.
