Mortal Kombat 3. Fact or fiction?

Rumors about Mortal Kombat 3 have been exciting fans of this popular fighting game for several years now. The number of rumors is so huge that attempts to create fake trailers for Tekken cannot be compared. Having sifted out all the chaff and left only the most interesting information, I bring to your attention a small selection of news about the creation of the third part of Mortal Kombat.

Let's start with old news:

"The film will not be a sequel, a prequel, or any other variation of the previous two films. Much like Batman Begins, it will start a new series, with new concepts, plot, etc.," said one tipster with the nickname Rayden on the untimely deceased Moviehole resource.

He continued: Threshold will have to wait until early 2000. This is when the contract with New Line Cinema ends (Threshold blames New Line for the failure of Mortal Kombat 2: Annihilation due to delayed release dates, limited budgets and absolute miscommunication. The reason for the delay was the script, the creation of which was divided into parts. The Threshold team (which had the rights to MK), constantly rewrote working versions of the script and had to send them to Midway (the creators of the game), so that the main creator (Ed Boon) would add his notes and corrections, and only then the script would be sent to the studio (according to rumors at that time, this should have been Lionsgate)."

Here are some comments from the director:

"This will be a new Mortal Kombat Universe, modeled after the real Universe. As I said before, think of it as a 'Batman Begins' kind of thing."

"At Threshold, a whole group of screenwriters does this. Working versions of the script are checked and finalized. Then the modified version is sent back for approval. This is how work on the project proceeds. The script takes up the most time. I agree, many projects are quickly developed and put into production, scripts are written as quickly as the scriptwriter's typing speed allows, but money is everything here. Since most projects finish the script first, and only then the financing begins. After which, in turn, casting begins, etc.... Most modern producers must cares about the script because their money is on the line. And if you come across a film that has 11 or 12 producers, then know that any of them has the right to intervene in the production as the amount of funding. As I said earlier, in working on this Threshold project, both Midway and the studio had one or two producers each, each of whom made revisions to the script. This is the situation today. We are developing the plot together with the scriptwriters."

“The casting was postponed to a later time. As I said earlier, we had to return to the script again, so there can be no talk of casting for now. Once we finish working on the script, we’ll start casting again, without any changes...”

The best news is that he confirmed his meeting with the heroes of the first film - Christopher Lambert (Raiden) and Robin Shu (Liu Kang).

February 2008 update:

The director of the third part of Mortal Kombat 3 is Chris “Mink” Morrison, who previously directed the film with Steven Seagal “Into the Sun”. It was announced that the project had been restarted and would not be released until 2010. The working title was Mortal Kombat 3: Devastation.

The director of the film mentioned “a complete change in the concept of the film. The modern audience is smart and savvy people, so the film must be made as high quality as possible in order to achieve the success of the first part. We are talking about everything: the visual component, the plot, the list of actors, effects, camera work and "It's all about the fight scenes that matter most. The original Mortal Kombat game sparked new ideas, and we need to maintain that innovative spirit and deliver at the highest level to succeed in today's cinematic market. This is no easy task."

Further gossip on IMDB suggested the return of Christopher Lambert as Raiden and Chris Casamassa as Scorpio. But, despite the completed script, the actors have not yet officially taken part in the casting.

Update April 2008:

There are many rumors about actor Linden Ashby, who played the role of Johnny Cage in the first part of the film. About how he returns from the dead, or about his statements in which the actor says that he would be happy to star in the sequel to MK. In this video, Linden Ashby talks about how he read the script for the third part back in May 2003. This is simply amazing! He really dreams of returning to the set, take a look.

June 2009 update:

Due to the bankruptcy of Midway, the creator of the Mortal Kombat series, debtors forced the sale of assets to Warner Bros. for 33 million dollars. Lawrence Kassanoff, who brought the first game to the big screen (as well as the TV show), through his company Threshold Entertainment, filed a lawsuit in bankruptcy court to retain his copyrights, including the rights to some of the characters from the game series. Mr. Kassanoff is also seeking to renew rights to film and television projects based on the popular fighting game series.

Here's an excerpt from Kassanoff's lawsuit: "In 1993, Kassanoff visited Midway...proposing the idea of taking Mortal Kombat in a completely different direction. Specifically, Kassanoff proposed developing...a feature-length film, a television series, and other types of production. Initially, Midway was reluctant I'm skeptical about this, because at that time Kassanoff's idea was too revolutionary...

The Mortal Kombat series, in its current state, is a product of the creation of Threshold and Kassanoff, rather than Midway. Midway's creativity was limited to video games. With their own minimal plots and mythology, and raw and underdeveloped characters...Kassanoff and Threshold were essentially responsible for all the creative ideas that turned the video game into a multimedia project."

It seems that everyone who wants to wait for the third part of the film should rely only on this man. However, it would be nice if the creator of the game itself, Ed Boon, also took part in the creation of Mortal Kombat 3.

I would like to add that, according to Kinopoisk data, the working title of the film differs from that previously indicated. Instead of "Mortal Kombat 3: Devastation" the title is "Mortal Kombat 3: Domination". Other data:

  • release date: 2010
  • director: Mink
  • producer: Lawrence Kassanoff
  • screenwriter: Sean Catherine Derek
  • budget: $35
  • duration: 100 minutes
  • slogan: All hell breaks loose...

There are also three posters (published in the news), but, unfortunately, this is just fan art and has nothing to do with the original developments.

If in such a time they stir up something like Tekken, it will be a complete epic failure and the realization that Hollywood can no longer do anything other than special effects!!! Previously, there really was such a boom around MK, but they cheated on the second part + killed the series on which they also saved!!!!!

I think if Mortal Kombat 3 beats the box office collections of at least 2 parts, then it would be possible to film Mortal Kombat Conquest Season 2 since Part 3 will be related closer to Season 1, if this is the case, then it’s just right

I'm also very interested in the release of the third part of the film

If anyone needs an electronic copy of Lawrence Kassanoff's lawsuit, I can provide it (22 pages, in English) :)
