Corey Yuen Kwai

Corey Yuen Kwai (Yuan Kui) (birth name: Ying Gang-Ming) is an actor, director, producer and stage manager from Hong Kong. Born in 1951 in China. He was one of the “Seven Little Fortunes”. Yuen uses the name Yuen to honor his teacher, Yu Jim Yuen. He speaks Cantonese and usually speaks it, but speaks English with difficulty.

While studying at the Beijing Opera School of the Chinese Drama Academy, Corey Yuen was one of the friends of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. Strict training was carried out under the supervision of teacher Yu. In the 70s, during the era of Hong Kong action films, Yuen often appeared in cameo roles.

Note: “Seven Little Lucky Ones”, also known as “Lucky Seven” is the name of a troupe made up of the most talented students of the Chinese Drama Academy. At the age of seven or eight, they traveled around demonstrating their acrobatic and acting skills to domestic and foreign audiences in various theaters or places like Laiyuan Amusement Park. The Academy also sent these students to work in film studios to act as extras or in bit roles.

Despite the fact that the number of people in the troupe was usually more than seven (and sometimes even fourteen), during the performance only seven people appeared on stage. Even Jackie Chan was one of the “Seven Little Lucky Ones” at one time. When Yu Academy teacher Jim Yuen was asked about his most famous student, he replied that Jackie "wasn't one of the best, but he was definitely the most annoying."

Now Corey Yuen is one of the most famous directors in Hong Kong and the United States of America. Has 2 awards (1993 and 1995) Golden Horse Award (for best production), one Hong Kong Film Award in 1994 (for best choreography) and has been nominated 10 times. In 1985, he became the first Chinese director to introduce Hong Kong style into American films. It was the action movie “No Retreat, No Surrender” with the future “star” Jean-Claude Van Damme. Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock owe the start of their careers to him with the films “Yes! Madam" (1985), "Winner Takes All" (1990) and "High Stakes" (1991). Together with Samo Hungg, Yuen directed the film starring Jackie Chan, Dragons Are Forever, and then directed Soul Saver with Anita Mui, Andy Low and Aaron Kwok.

In 1993, he met Jet Li and made several films with his participation. The first was “Fong Sai-yuk” and its sequel, then “Bodyguard from Beijing”, “The New Legend of Shaolin” (Red Dragon), “My Father is a Hero” and “Risk Level”. After more than eight years of working together, Corey Yuen served as fight choreographer for several of Lee's films in America: Lethal Weapon 4, Romeo Must Die, The Stand and Cradle to Grave. In 2002, he directed the films “The Transporter” and “Battle Angels” (So Close). Ewan decided not to direct the sequel to The Transporter (2005), but his team of stuntmen and fighters nevertheless took part in the filming.

Corey Yuen's film credits include the action films Above the Law with Yuen Biao and Cynthia Rothrock, She Shots Straight with Joyce Godenzi, Sammo Hung and Yuen Wah, and Hero (1997) with Yuen Biao and Takeshi Kaneshiro (not to be confused with “Hero” 2002) and others. He has been the fight choreographer for many films and while his style of choreography and filming may not have the same degree of individuality as other Hong Kong directors such as Yen Woo Ping or Ching Soo Tang, he certainly stands out for his creative approach. and speed. Another distinctive feature is the outstanding ability to mix duels and gunplay, two styles of fighting that not all Hong Kong action films can boast of successfully using.
