"Ip Man 3" - review from M.A.A.S.

Dynamic director duo Wilson Yip (Ip Man, SPL) and hand-to-hand action actor Donnie Yen together again - they complete an epic trilogy"Yip Man"They were also joined by a former boxing champion Mike Tyson and rising star Max Zhang. There will be spoilers below, if you want to avoid them, stop reading.

Plot "Ip Man 3" (Ip Man 3D) begins several years after the events of the previous part; Ip Man (Yen) tries to live a quiet and peaceful life with his wife and son, the action takes place in Hong Kong in 1959. But soon Master Ip is forced to defend the local school , where his son studies, protecting it from local triads and their leader, who came from the West (Tyson), who are trying to close this school. In addition, the Master has to conflict with a high-class Wing Chun master (Zhang), and his wife (Lynn Hungg) is terminally ill.

"Bruce Lee" played Danny Chan (Killer Football) appears only in a cameo. His introduction to Master Yip was a small and fun scene that featured Bruce Lee's famous line about adaptability and flexibility: "Be water my friend".

Legendary choreographer and fight director Yuen Wu Ping (The Matrix, Fist of Legend), took “a little bit from Sammo Hungg” and added it to the third part of the franchise. Before that, he had already worked on an Ip-Man-based film (2013's Grandmaster) and already there had a ready-made recipe for Wing Chun choreography. However, there is one ingredient that distinguishes "Ip Man-3"from"Grandmaster"- Donnie Yen. World celebrity in hand-to-hand action films. No, we're not trying to humiliate Tony Leung Chu Wai, but when it comes to "action" Donnie Yen BEST.

The reunion of Wu Ping and Yen after a long hiatus from their last collaborations (1994's Wing Chun and 1993's Iron Monkey) did not have a negative impact on the film. The action is very cool - Woo Ping gave a bunch of action scenes, each better than the last. There are at least 6-7 of them in the film, we will highlight 4 of them:

Ip Man vs a lot of thugs in a shipyard. Here Wu Ping pays tribute to the first part of the trilogy, pitting the Master against 10 fighters (as in the first part). Later, Ip Man has to fight with 30 bandits. At the same time, protecting their son, which fuels a feeling of anxiety for them. The scene from the first part was very memorable and almost iconic, it was difficult to “interrupt” it, but Wu Pin tried.

Ip Man vs Thai boxer. The scene takes place in an elevator where Ip Man and his wife are attacked by a Thai boxer (Simon Cook). The fight between Wing Chun and Muay Thai styles takes place first in the elevator, then moves to the landing. Cook known as a stunt double Tony Jaa, so his movements in battle are almost the same. So, if you wanted to know what a fight between Ian and Jaa would look like, then it would be something like this, like in this scene.

Ip Man vs Mike Tyson; Wing Chun vs Western Boxing. Ip Man had to last three minutes against Tyson, which is the equivalent of a boxing round. Oddly enough, the scene pays tribute to the fight between Yen and Sammo Hungg in the second film and, unlike the previous one, uses a clock as a timer. Tyson was unexpectedly agile in his very first movie fight; he fought in the style of his younger self (classic "Iron Mike"), showing off his punching power. There was a very good exchange of blows between the heroes of Ian and Tyson, and the result was the same as the fight to which the fight refers - a draw.

Ip Man vs Chun Tin-Chi: Final fight, Wing Chun vs Wing Chun. [...] The main enemy is executed Jin Zhang, who had already worked with Wu Ping in "Grandmaster". Wu Ping forced himself to show his full strength. to look the part against a tough veteran like Ian. The scene is almost classic: both fight with poles, butterfly knives and then with bare hands. The great thing is that Wu Ping paid homage to Bruce Lee by hitting the famous One Inch Punch for the final blow. This final showdown is on par with other Wu Ping scenes: Jet Li and Yen in Once Upon a Time in China 2 and Jet Li vs. Shido Nakamura in Fearless.

Hack and predictor Aviator"Ip Man 3" - a great contribution to this series of films, a little worse than the first film (which, in truth, is almost impossible to surpass), but an order of magnitude better than the second part. Ian was great in the first part, and in the third he is exactly the same and remained. Ip Man for him is like Wong Fei Hungg for Jet Li - these characters will now always be associated with these actors.

I will be very glad to see the fourth part, where they will reveal more about the relationship and joint training of Ip Man and Bruce Lee. But if this was the last part, then I'm glad Ian wrapped up the story beautifully.

  • Plot: 4/5
  • Actor play: 4/5
  • Action: 4.5/5

Correction, this is not Tyson's first fighting role. He starred as himself in the film Algiers Forever (2014). He had a cameo there - for a couple of chapters. hero fought against the nightclub security guards.

And now on the topic, who was the director of Ip Man in the first part? I know that Sammo was in the second one, and I didn’t like the choreography there + the cables were straining everything else.

I feel it will be great if the director is the same.

      Dave,
Of course, the director in all three parts is Wilson Yip.
