The city is under siege. Press conference and video about the making of the film

A press conference dedicated to the fantastic action film “City Under Siege,” during which a 5-minute video was shown about how the film was made, was held on June 1 in Beijing. It was attended by investors/producers, director Benny Chan, actors Aaron Kwok, Ngai Sing, Wu Jing and Shu Kee.

Benny Chan said that back then he wanted to outdo himself with a new concept. Having previously shot a large number of modern films, he decided to make a film about mutants; he wanted to raise the level of requirements for action scenes, improve what was happening, and attract the attention of the audience to something new.

However, Benny Chan noted:

“There are a lot of films on this topic in Hollywood, their market is very large, they have sufficient funds. In terms of technology and special effects, we are still behind them. Thus, in this film we will highlight our forte - Chinese Kung Fu. Each fight will be something no one has ever seen in a Hollywood movie. For them, Chinese Kung Fu is a big mystery. We use all our strengths to compensate for our shortcomings. Therefore, the film will not focus on fictional sci-fi elements, we will focus on action as well as hand-to-hand combat.”

“About 10 million yuan was spent on special effects, this is the most wasteful film I have ever made. In addition to special effects, part of the funds was spent on stunts and makeup. There are five mutants in the film and for each mutant five make-up artists are needed. That's why we had more than 20 makeup artists, and it wasn't easy. This is the most difficult film I have ever made, even more difficult than Shaolin. I had to rack my brains, thinking and planning each episode and scenery.”

“The audience always expects some scenes with explosions, and we also worked in this regard. We use more space, such as air combat. In the past, the set looked more mundane and it was impossible to create such effects. To film the finale, we cordoned off an entire street, placed a hundred cars and started filming the fight right in the middle of it. If it were not for the thematic genre of our film, this might seem like an extreme exaggeration.”

Once again Ngai Sing got the role of the main villain keeping the city under siege. Director Benny Chan praised his superb technique and elevated his name to the level of an action superstar. Ngai Sing's appearance was completely changed with the help of terrifying mutant makeup. Because of his complex makeup, he had to arrive on set three hours earlier than everyone else and leave it later than everyone else, so much time was spent removing the makeup.

“But I didn’t consider it a boring activity, rather, it was a pleasure for me, I enjoyed filming with such makeup. If you put your heart and soul into your work, you will be able to convey the feelings of your character. The combat in “City Under Siege” is really great, and Wu Jing is a very good opponent.”

- said Ngai Sing

Woo Jing plays the role of Agent, a tough-talking cop who catches mutants in the film. For Wu Jing, Benny Chan has come up with a lot of dramatic sequences that will be a refreshing change from his past roles. Dressed in a European outfit with a pair of gold-framed sunglasses, Wu Jing often appears in research laboratories and crime scenes. At the same time, the film gave him enough time to show off his brilliant wushu skills.

Wu Jing said:

“It was really hard filming City Under Siege. In the film, I am a normal person, but I have to fight with abnormal individuals. When an ordinary person fights with mutants, the mutants do not feel anything, and I have to hit with such force that they feel pain. Plus, mutants can fly, whereas I have to stay on the ground. How can I fight? All this had to be carefully thought through.”

Zhang Jingchu, who played the role of Wu Jing's friend, was unable to attend the press conference, but Wu Jing noted that the image she recreated in the film was the image of his ideal wife, and added that the film was a turning point in his life.

Benny Chan is very proud of the way Wu Jing played his role: “In City Under Siege, you will see a completely new Wu Jing. His character is a very complex person, but he grasped everything on the fly, and I am sure that in terms of acting he has grown a lot. We will cooperate more closely in the future.”

The premiere of the action movie “City Under Siege,” filmed on a budget of about 100 million yuan, will take place in China on August 6, 2010.

Once Jackie Woo went on a free voyage, he stopped feeling the limits of using wires. It's a pity.

Chinese premiere in August. The only thing that confuses me is the large number of jumps with wires, although this is science fiction, mutants, etc.
