"Furiosa” is a welcome addition to the world of Mad Max, and the expected vehicular carnage does not disappoint. Chris Hemsworth steals the show as the villain, and Anya Taylor-Joy - an ideal replacement for Charlize, incredibly similar to her in different moments. The film drags a little, with the odd pacing hitching here and there, but “Furiosa” is still a wild ride.
Plot
Young Furiosa is kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great biker gang led by the warlord Dementus. As they race through the Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel, ruled by Immortan Joe. As two tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa finds herself embroiled in an ongoing battle to return home.
Review
I read a comment that said the reason the Mad Max movies work so well is because each one is so different from the last, and that's 100% true; Each film has its own personality, but they all essentially take place in the same setting.
"Furiosa” is a prequel to "Fury Road“, in which Charlize Theron took over the role of Furiosa Anya Taylor-Joy, with Chris Hemsworth playing the flamboyant villain Dementus. This movie isn't as fast-paced as Fury Road and you could say it's a bit too long, but there's no denying that it has some incredible action sequences. George Miller knows how to stage his episodes so that we see all the action clearly and understand who is doing what.
Every appearance Chris Hemsworth on screen, these are the best moments of the film and he has become my favorite villain of the franchise; he wasn't a faceless nightmare like Immortan Joe (who is also in the film), but he feels like a man who has lost everything and gone crazy. Anya Taylor-Joy doesn't appear until an hour into the film, as the first half shows her as a child when she is kidnapped by Dementus; he accepts her as his own and wants to know where the land of plenty is.
Prequels always feel a little unnecessary since we know certain things are going to happen, like Furiosa losing her arm; we knew this was coming and we have an idea of how the story will end. The ending was a little disappointing, but up to that point we see monster trucks, explosions, and the action culminates in a breathtaking parachute scene.
Nice to see a comeback Richard Norton, who was also in Fury Road, and several familiar characters who appear throughout the film.
Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, returns to score the film and once again does an excellent job referencing the theme from Fury Road.
Overall, Furiosa doesn't quite reach the level of Fury Road in terms of pacing and action sequences, but it definitely has some entertaining moments and Chris Hemsworth is great. Definitely worth watching on the big screen as it is a true cinematic spectacle.
