Donnie Yen has sparked outrage in the martial arts world

What would you do if you starred in two commercially successful hits?

Announce publicly that the success of the films had nothing to do with the legendary character (and, accordingly, his worldwide fame) on which the plot was based, but depended on your own, personal “star” appeal.

With his narcissism, the Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen, no doubt offended a lot of people.

In a recent interview, the protagonist of the “Ip Man” duology, a semi-biographical story about the famous teacher Bruce Lee, boldly stated:

...the success of the film has nothing to do with Wing Chun (Spring). If I used Hungg Gar, Hungg Gar would become popular, if I used Wing Ha (Summer), Wing Cho (Autumn), Wing Dong (Winter) - the result would be the same...

Both parts of “Ip Man” collected about $45 million at the American box office, and the popularity of the style shown in the films has increased more than ever over the past two years.

Such disrespectful comments from Donnie Yen subsequently aroused the wrath of the Wing Chun and Hungg Kuen schools.

Rumors reached Grand Master Ip Chun, Ip Man's eldest son, who promotes Wing Chun throughout the world. His 85 years of age did not prevent him from expressing his reasonable and balanced opinion:

The company making the film decides who will play the lead role. But the point was that the films have nothing to do with Wing Chun. Please compare them with his other films. Were they that successful? I don't want to judge, let the audience decide for themselves.

Ip Chun also added that it was ingratitude and it was the same as “biting the hand that feeds you.”

Even fight director Sammo Hung, who starred in the film's sequel as teacher Hungg Kuen, criticized his good friend for his arrogant and ridiculous statement.

A response was received from China from a representative of Donnie Yen, where the actor is currently filming:

Donnie meant that the success of Ip Man depended less on the martial arts school and more on the characters and their development. If he didn't respect Wing Chun, he wouldn't have accepted this role!

I watched Kar Wai's film. not impressed. be that as it may, Ip Man's success is largely due to Donny. Before watching this film, I had seen many Chinese films of this genre, none of them caught my attention: for me all the Chinese were the same, kind of funny) and after watching Ip Man I was impressed by Donnie’s acting, how he conveyed all the inner and the physical strength of this hero. By and large, it didn’t matter what style was depicted - let those who understand BI styles pay attention to this. I’m a simple girl, not understanding anything about it, I saw strong and accurate blows from a person you want to emulate, who causes delight. If there were another actor in his place, it would be another Chinese action film. Donnie is right - no matter what style he used, he would still captivate the audience. History proves that the success of a film does not always depend on the storyline; often the actor plays an important role in the popularity of the film.

Yes, that’s what Donnie does so well, getting into scandals. All the Hong Kong stars are so righteous it's boring. ))) And Donny is something of a bright spot in Hong Kong show business. )))

Where can I watch the trailer for the film "The Grand Master" by Wong Kar Wai?

Another prequel is being directed by Wong Kar Wai. This guy is brilliant, but he won’t have as much action as a character study and philosophy (which perhaps no one except Karavay will understand), although judging by the trailer the fights there will be on the level.

    This will be really interesting

Now it will be doubly interesting to compare with the future prequel. There's another actor in the lead role. :)

People, no need to make things up!
"...the success of the film has nothing to do with Wing Chun (Spring). If I had used Hungg Gar, Hungg Gar would have become popular if I had used Wing Ha (Summer), Wing Cho (Autumn), Wing Dong (Winter) - the result would be the same..." - He means that the main meaning is not which of the actors fought in this film and how they fought, but who the story was told about. If Jet Li or even a little-known actor had starred, the film would still have been successful.

Yes, but if you literally understand the meaning of what Donnie said, it turns out that it was thanks to him (as an actor and personality) that this film became a box office success and famous.

I believe that Donny did not say anything catastrophic. If Master Ip Man had promoted a different style, the world would have learned about a different martial art. The success of the film is largely due to the storyline and the overall picture of the film.

Hmm, I didn’t expect something like this from Donnie Yen...

And he always says what he thinks. ;)
