Alien vs Ninja. Review by Todd Brown

Considering that the entire plot is contained in a three-word title, Todd Brown decided not to talk about him or the characters, and, instead, presented a list of those things thanks to which “Alien vs Ninja” (Alien Versus Ninja) received such a positive reaction from the festival audience F.

1. Director Seiji Chiba and stage director Yuji Shimomura delivered on the promise of the title. When you give your movie a title like “Alien vs Ninja”, you will definitely have to do one very important thing. You need to divide the world into two groups of people: those who want to see how ninja fight with strangers, and those who do not want to. Those who don't want to watch will never go to the cinema, so you don't have to worry about them; their tastes or criteria for assessing quality will be of little interest. We eliminate them immediately. However, people who WANT to watch aliens fight ninja, REALLY want it, so it's better to give them what they need. Which is exactly what the film does. A lot. Very big. There is almost nothing in it except cruel ninja and even more cruel strangers. And this is a fantastic sight.

2. Chiba и Shimomura we understood that no matter what else was needed for the film, it had to be fun. And they have a lot of fun. This was done with the help of charismatic acting, with clever visual gags, with a guy dressed in a rubber alien suit fighting in hand-to-hand combat with terribly anachronistic ninja, backed by a completely frenetic pace. This film was supposed to entertain the audience and it did that to the fullest.

3. Shimomura has proven once again that he is one of the most creative fight directors in the world, smart and entertaining. Here his work varies greatly - it’s almost impossible to film something like this in such a short period of time - each battle, and there are a huge number of them, is presented with its own characteristic distinctive features. Some fights are very serious, many are based on acrobatics and playstyle. Some - hand-to-hand, some - with weapons. And a large number of combinations of all of the above. Each fight is flawlessly planned and executed by an extremely capable stunt team.

4. Both in the script, which he wrote himself, and in the camera work, Chiba knew exactly when to use style and when to keep the scene simple. There is nothing superfluous in the film. The director knew what he would do, knew what he wanted, and did it 100%. This is very rare and deserves mention.

5. Blood and effects with artificial limbs from Soichi Yumezawa complete with delightful and realistic voice acting. This was facilitated by some unexpected moves made under the influence of the history of Japanese cinema, rich in all sorts of monsters. I agree, it's a movie with people in suits, but it's different from the ones you've seen before.

Although these are five key factors, the success of an action movie “Alien vs Ninja” mostly depends on one thing: it gives the audience exactly what they expect, in addition it pleases them with some other things that the audience is not even aware of. And now they want to continue.
