Bruce Lee recreated in 3D to advertise Johnnie Walker Blue Label products

Description of the commercial from the author Joseph Kahn:

My good friend Johnny Tan, Creative Director at BBH, and I first discussed this concept last year. We filmed in Hong Kong, and then, to recreate the image of Bruce Lee using computer graphics, we collaborated for nine months with the British visual effects company The Mill. His head and other details are entirely 3D graphics. Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee's daughter, helped us with this, and we used her vision to make sure that everything was conveyed accurately: from appearance to spirituality. We tried to be as respectful as possible to Lee, both as a person and a legend.

Thank you so much to Johnny, Shannon, Mill, and everyone else who worked tirelessly on this project.

It turns out that Danny Chan filmed here and modeled/animated in Maya.

EvilDollaR, I belatedly join in the congratulations!

I won't lie - I liked it. And after a few seconds, even the not-so-good graphics stopped hurting my eyes. Just beautifully shot. Especially Lee in a suit, like a man who has achieved everything, against the backdrop of Hong Kong, imposingly pacing in the penthouse....
    Not bad. Very.

Happy Birthday EvilDollaR!) I express my deep gratitude for the cool site and I wish that you have more information than others)))

      Thank you.

Previously, I wouldn’t be able to publish the original source information, and I don’t do copypasting from the RuNet as a matter of principle. :)

    1) Congratulations! Happy, healthy!!! :)

    2) according to the topic:
The animation is, without a doubt, eerily real-life [and looks like] Bruce Lee,” said Edwin Lee, a Hong Kong filmmaker. “But to attribute all that talent so you can sell alcohol? I find it disgraceful. The man even abstained from alcohol…The fact that he is 'revived' in such vivid manner to promote a product [and] lifestyle he never conformed to nor has a choice in this matter is, I feel, immoral and shows you the lowest depravity of mass marketing these days. [And this is] all to break into the Chinese market, hence why we find the Hong Kong cultural icon speaking Mandarin.”

    I agree with every word.

    1) Dyakuyu!

    2) I don't agree with Edwin's words about "eerily real-life" animation. The facial expressions are simplified (Serkis to the rescue!), but the facial model is by far the best I've ever seen.

By the way, who can provide RELIABLE information that Bruce Lee was NOT filmed there? And then someone did their best to convince me that it was he there. But I couldn’t challenge it because I couldn’t find any reliable information.

The Movie How Bruce Lee Changed the World mentions the fact that Bruce Lee did not star in this ad, especially since the ad came out long after Bruce's death.

Damn, I forgot about your birthday! Congratulations on this wonderful day! All the best to you!!!

And as for advertising... Computer Bruce, in my opinion, turned out great! But I’m sad that the image of a great man who always supported a healthy lifestyle is used in alcohol advertising...

Or do you think that athletes don’t take a drop of alcohol into their mouth?

    They take.
We are waiting for a hashish ad from Muhammad Ali, no matter that he is still alive, and a coke ad from Joe Lewis.

By the way, about alcohol, don’t get too drunk today Sanya))))

I won’t, I have a lot of work today/tomorrow. Maximum - champagne. Thank you, Zheka!

Just an alcohol advertisement from Bruce Lee. Well, it somehow went well. And stupid. And it's ugly. Despite the fact that his daughter took part in this.

The advertisement is beautiful, there is no vulgarity, it advertises good, high-quality alcohol.

    Bruce Lee was a saint...
And the fact that he consumed not only whiskey, but also hashish, we’ll forget about that, right?

And he was also a woman, his great-grandmother was Jewish, that’s why his real name is Goldenweiser... We’re not talking about Bruce Lee’s immunity. Just an alcohol advertisement from Bruce Lee. Well, it somehow went well. And stupid. And it's ugly. Despite the fact that his daughter took part in this.

Dragon Li and whiskey don't mix. What do these sorry bastards think?

Read an interview with Polly Chu from advertising agency JWT BEIJING. It was she who participated in the development of viral advertising with nunchucks.

about three years ago I sorted this question out in detail in Scott Adkins’ VK group, unfortunately I no longer remember the name of the topic of the post. The most obvious evidence: video did not exist before advertising.

You don't need to convince me. But on the other side, I’m sure there will be a question: where is the proof that “the video did not exist” and not “you didn’t see.”

Strange, why was this done? I don't see the point in this. No real coherent need to use 3D Bruce. Why not Marilyn Monroe? John Lennon? Freddie Mercury? Jim Morrison? In my opinion, it’s just a “non-topical” idea, as if they flipped a coin and it fell on Bruce Lee, so they made Bruce. And then they taught philosophy. They wanted to do it stylishly, but they didn’t.

    Author's gravatar

But I didn’t like how it was done.
The computer head really hurts the eyes.
And I have an absolutely calm attitude towards advertising.

    Author's gravatar

Although I'm not a fan of Bruce, it's painful to watch. Firstly: I don’t believe that 3D is better in new generation games now; secondly: what kind of spirituality is there in the advertising of alcohol by sports and martial arts stars? Even if he could drink alcohol during his lifetime, he would not advertise it. Advertising ping-pong phones at least did not discredit his media and life image.
But this is all my IMHO.
