Judging by the reviews that appeared, the director, who made films about dance, coped with the filming of action scenes with dignity. I'm glad that Ray Park was given more attention this time, giving him almost a separate storyline.

Personally, the figure of Eric Jacobas (along with Johnny Nguyen and Marco Zaror) is of great interest to me.

Oh, good video!!! This is tough and comes with a certain idea. It was necessary to beat to the end. The idea with the cuts is GREAT!
But still, there are experiencing fragments. And this is the main thing! It’s clear that the guys weren’t trying to show off who was the coolest, but wanted to film a real fight. Well done!!!
    And they played well.

In general, this resource is very important and useful for the Martial Arts film world.

It's true! In fact, it’s the only MA resource in RuNet that I’ve been reading regularly for a couple of years now, ever since I found it.

Thank you, we will wait and help if anything happens.

    - Thank you very much for the offered help! She will be very needed.
In general, this resource is very important and useful for the Martial Arts film world. And we need to involve smart people in the matter. After all, we all want a good movie and we root and worry for those who in some way intersect with the action film industry. In addition, Martial Arts Info is an excellent platform for communicating not only with those who are interested in cinema, but in the future, with those who make it.
It seems to me that the site should reach a more powerful level, and over time it would be possible to make a version of the printed publication with all the emerging consequences. The main thing is to strive towards the goal. And the goal is one - a good movie!
It's all simple. Lots of interesting personalities and good stories. Need to shoot. Sometimes neighbors say such things and you scream - Here! This needs to be filmed!!! Why do they remix remakes???!!!
I once read here that one of the young stuntmen communicates freely with Florentine, Adkins and even Vanya. Another with Donnie Yen. I have some contacts with Jackie Chan. Small, but there. You need to communicate with these people. We need to learn from their experience and share it with young people.
As for me personally, everything now comes down to the films that we release. We will then work closely on subsequent films, attracting as many interesting people as possible who have the desire to do something to promote the Action genre.
I’m also personally interested in producing certain teams making their moves in cinema. We have a lot of smart people in Russia, but everything leaves much to be desired.
We need to help young talents. They know HOW, and we could suggest WHAT.
Today I told a piece, and Ravenside sketched out some great moves! What's the end result? As a result, an interesting scene that the viewer will remember and then recommend to others for viewing. The result is a good mood and financial profit. In my opinion, you can't imagine anything better.

"Dim, when do you expect to release a teaser/trailer?"

    - Alexander, most likely on the 20th of April. In principle, everything is ready. I want the necessary footage to be included in the trailer from the two scenes that we are currently filming.
Next week I will post a program about this film online.
As soon as I post something online, I’ll be sure to let this resource know first!
By the way, my sound engineer is currently working on the film “Squishy,” which we shot in 2004. We fixed the sound at one time, but then there was no time for it. Now we are correcting the error. The final scene is simply amazing! Exactly in the style of Jackie Chan and Gaidai! The trailer will be out in about a week.
I don't feel old at all.

Agree. It’s just that people don’t always want to strain and take risks, even if stress and risk...can lead to greater success. This MAY be stopping them.

That's right!!! But here knowledge of film history and an accurate calculation of the danger in the frame already comes into play. Why is this necessary and how to do it.

“For example, hardly anyone will look at Adkins or Shahlavi. And Tony Jaa is very remarkable and watchable!”

    - I mean by its outwardly static parameters in the frame or in photographs.

Great lost and found idea!!! And about the housing office employee, in general, Gaidai!!!
    Great! Thanks a lot!!!
Perhaps I will share my movie moves here. if people don't mind.
In two months I want to finally release this film into the world. And in the future - to make a good adventure film for the big screen.
When you communicate and share your thoughts, amazing things are born in the cycle of debate and discussion! I have my own concept and management, but the ingredients can be absolutely anything. The main thing is an excellent result!!!

Jaidev, you can also make it so that when emerging from a snowdrift, the hero periodically leaves/loses something in this snowdrift, either his pants or a down jacket, so in a panic he dives back into the snowdrift and searches. And when he emerges, he always finds something in this snowdrift, or ends up in some other person’s clothes (a woman’s fur coat or a police cap). And when he somersaults at the end, some housing office worker in an orange vest pops out of the snowdrift as if from a well and shakes his fist at him.

“This is what producers and directors need to think about first of all, and not about how to film something for three kopecks.”

Agree. It’s just that people don’t always want to strain and take risks, even if stress and risk...can lead to greater success. This MAY be stopping them.

“For example, hardly anyone will look at Adkins or the same Shahlavi. But the same Tony Jaa is very remarkable and watchable!”

Well, this is of course extremely controversial and too subjective. Ja was good in Ong-Bak, in Tom-Yumu-Gung the dramatic line with the elephant looks extremely unconvincing, and he ruined Ong-Bak 2-3 (and physically too, the various styles in his performance looked weak, and his body he... has become very decrepit in appearance). Darren...is very good at playing villains (somewhat reminiscent of the situation with Dolph, whose villains in films of any level turn out to be a sight for sore eyes). And Scott... here, of course, IMHO, as they say, is the best MOVIE fighter of our time (in terms of the ratio of acting/charisma/appearance/physical data, i.e. those film fighters to whom he is inferior in terms of stunts, he is superior to them in terms of acting and vice versa ). Although his game is not the best (initially it was), but over the years he, in this regard, gets better (especially when it comes to...badass characters =)).

What a long way to go. We finish a comedy film and at the beginning of the film we have a jog around the city. One of the film's characters gets a call from the shift watchman. The hero is late for work! There are traffic jams all over the city. In a matter of minutes, having cut where necessary, he must run through the entire city in the most interesting way. I decided to "enhance the film's impact" by adding a scene of running through the snowdrifts on the island, which is located under the bridge dividing the city. The picture is wonderful + there is an interesting factor. He runs, drowns in snowdrifts, and then generally dives into the snow and, like a mole, crawls the required distance. Periodically, like the periscope of a submarine, it pokes its head to the surface, saying, I still have a long time to crawl. Then bam! He flies out of the snowdrift with a somersault on the opposite side of the island and continues on.
I communicate with tracers. And they told me - oh well, why bother there, everything is fine with you. And I tell them it’s not normal. Everywhere in all videos and films about parkour, RUN. And I want something interesting.
In general, no one wants to bother, and everyone wants to go the same road. Like sheep in a stable!

    Celpaso:
In essence, everything is correctly laid out on the shelves! But... only on one side.
Let's look at it from another perspective.
Having seen the video of RAID or SHEPHERD, my mother or sister, girlfriend, nephew, niece, grandmother will not go to see this film. 100%!
But let's say they'll go to COMMANDO, which can be considered a family action movie!
This film has action, scope, humor and excellent casting. And now the situation seems to be from shooters and tooth crushers, but it “catches”. As old as time, but “catchy”. This is what producers and directors need to think about first and foremost, and not about how to film something for three pennies.
Florentine will never make it out of middle-class action movies. Because he is on his own wavelength and is simply not able to switch.
But whatever one may say, pure fighting games are primarily films for a certain circle of people. And they are unlikely to bring huge profits. Only under the condition of improbability, as in the case of ONG BAK.
There is one more minus - physical. For example, hardly anyone will look at Adkins or Shahlavi. And the same Tony Jaa is very remarkable and watchable!

Hmm.. Kinopoisk says that “Ninja” has a budget of 10. Who's lying? Fir trees, but of course it’s not a matter of budgets. Yes, that’s not what we’re talking about, I don’t pay primary attention to the budget, it’s possible to film a city even with billions... But... Damn, we’re all talking about the same thing, but in different words)) Somehow understanding escapes. Florentine is a great guy, but his “Rebel” with Daniels was filmed completely behind the scenes, almost in the same pavilion with cardboard houses. But I watch it, and even more so "Savat", with much greater interest than his "Ninja", with all its pleasant pictures.
I'm talking about the fact that in films with a huge budget, fighting games are completely dull and old-fashioned, despite the fact that fights are often vital there. And in class B films, where the fights are often staged professionally, but they (the fights) are the same. Now it’s like they’re copying them from each other. So not only are they the same, they are also boring and meaningless, more to show off. Well, Tim Man will show himself, they will take him to Hollywood, and he will direct something there with Nolan or, God forbid, with Statham. And he will also stage crap and dullness. The circle is closed.

    About comparing Ninja and Raid:

Actually, Ninja has a budget of 5 million, not 10 (just like Undisputed 2 has a budget of NOT 8 million, but 1, and Shepherd has a budget of 12, not 3)

The point here is not in budgets (although in Thailand... you can get a much more expensive picture than in Bulgaria or Romania for less money), but in conditions and attitude towards the film.

Ong-Bak, Tom-Yum-Gung, Raid, despite the Bashny budget (by Hollywood standards), are class A films for their countries, hence the attitude towards them is appropriate. Local producers are interested in investing funds, local film companies give 100% to filming, allocate a large amount of time for filming, films are released on the big screen in their country, if successful in their country... foreign companies are more interested in buying rights to rent Asian fighting games abroad.

Undeniable 2,3 and Ninja are category B, second-rate films, hence the attitude towards them... appropriate. Producers try to save every penny, therefore they film any country in the world in Bulgaria, cut the number of shooting days to a minimum, the ideas of directors and actors are cut to pieces if, in their opinion, this will increase the costs of the film, hence the directors and actors stop give 100% and just serve the number, thereby lowering the quality of the film even lower (Hello Van Damme!!!), etc. and so on.

For example: The Expendables 2 was filmed in the region of 90 days (100 million dollar blockbuster), Raid in the region of 70 days, Killer Games - 24 days, Gringo - 21 days, Ninja in the region of 5 weeks (indicated time at the control point... this is most likely the entire production , although in reality the entire production took, most likely, less).

For example: Skyfall (200 million Hollywood blockbuster) was filmed in 6 months, Raid 2... was filmed in 6 months (although this is most likely taking into account post-production, but still), Ninja 2 was filmed in 36-40 days.

For example: Tony Jaa was injured... he is given weeks to recover, Scott Adkins was injured... frozen, filming continues from the next day.

This is what I mean....the conditions when filming fighting games in the West and in Asia (with seemingly similar budgets) are completely different. And poor filming conditions simply do not allow us to fully realize the capabilities and talents of such people as Isaac Florentine, Scott Adkins, Darren Shahlavi, etc. and so on. And the fact that they manage to produce quite competitive (with Asian) films...that...says a lot of good things about them =)

"but they will go to Adkins and “other trickers” out of interest in seeing something cool (in this case... fights)."
and alas, in most cases, they won’t see anything cool there. We are talking about the situation in general, and not about Jackie Chan specifically. Don't you think that everything is... the same? Most of the short films, previews, full films, do they look like each other like brothers and sisters? And the scope and budget would not help, they are the same in essence. In the head of the creator.
We still went to the Raid. Although I’m not a fan of this film, I see that there isn’t a lot of budget, the scope is actually quite intimate. But in the end, Reid is quoted little by little, compared with him, and it seems to me that they will soon make parodies of him. It means there is something in him, it’s stuck in his head. And here is "Ninja" by Florentine. The budget is 10 times larger, although of course it’s also not the greatest, but it’s still noticeably larger. And what? Nothing really stuck with me, because it’s not a good film. This, of course, is all IMHO.

“There’s a good film in the cinema with Jackie or ... with Adkins, along with Tim Man, Ron Snurenburg and a dozen other trickers. What are we going to do?
Jackie Chan of course! This is a recognized fact. Why?"

Because Chan is a more famous actor and his films are much more significant in scope (six months of filming, full support from the state, wide release and a budget of 60 million..... other film-makers cannot dream of half of such conditions).

For the PEOPLE this is enough, but many who are better versed in combat cinematography... will go to Chan purely out of respect for his PREVIOUS works, not expecting anything cool, but to Adkins and the “other trickers” they will go because interest in seeing something cool (in this case...fights).

Exactly Ravenside!!! The Condors have amazing energy! And how does “Above the Law” still look!!! Great movie. How many times I look and say every time - Oh, how beautifully and harshly they sweep there! And the cameraman and editor are really great! And Corey Yuen at his best. Both in directing and in the role of a goofball!

And once they told the guy: “You’re a student of Jackie Chan, it’s weak to jump down (and there was the 15th floor). There’s nothing below, but don’t be afraid, we’ll secure you with cables.”
At one time, Chan was told: “You can break a brick with your fist.” Ha Ha! The same story.

Jackie has done a lot, but surprisingly, he doesn't like his 90s movies. However.

    Author's gravatar

EvilDollaR, that's normal. Even more so with age. Either Lucas or Coppola said that they filmed a lot for the public, so that later they could do something for themselves. (But they did not mean hack work or a complete opportunism).
And if Jackie really said exactly that, then his words only confirm the opinions in our dialogue.

    Author's gravatar

About Jackie. He was once driving in a car with his student/successor (the guy won a reality show in 2008, starred with him in PI2013), and he asked him: “Listen, why did you film CZ12 right now and not earlier?” He replied: “In the past, everything I did was designed for the public. Only now, when I’m older and understand that my capabilities are no longer enough, I finally realize what I want. I want to do something for myself". Based on the guy's words, PI2013 will be a drama, there will be few fights, the relationship between a policeman father and his daughter, etc.

And once they told the guy: “You’re a student of Jackie Chan, it’s hard to jump down (and there was the 15th floor). There’s nothing below, but don’t be afraid, we’ll secure you with ropes.” :) By the way. he doesn’t want to be like Jet or Chan in fights, he wants to develop something of his own. For now, he’s starring in TV series, where he often gets hired as a choreographer.

An acquaintance once told me about Jackie, trying to justify the “sterility” of everyone else: well, they say, Jackie Chan is a genius, and such people appear once every 50-100 years. Why are you asking the others so coolly))) I tell him: Genius? So what do you think is the secret of success? Do you think he just sits on the sofa, and divine ideas fly out of his open mouth like a multi-colored rainbow and immediately materialize into a film? Apparently, not everyone understands that in addition to the fact that he is a genius, he also plows like an ox, his head and his body work and work, he works hellishly hard, looks for new ideas, and does not spare himself. That's why this is the result.
Let me take a break from Jackie and think about the rest of the great trinity. I rewatched "Eastern Condors" here. Oh, what a fire movie. Yetitsky strength, he is simply bursting with coolness))

    Author's gravatar

But what you say is right Ravenside!
And I always wonder - Why does this happen???!!!
Are the brains of those who practice martial arts in cinema so damp that such a sad picture emerges?
Let me return to Jackie again. I rewatched MIRACLES the other day. Amazingly shot! The installation is top notch! And there seems to be nothing sophisticated in the form of mind-blowing tricker technology, but how everything is conceived and looks in action scenes!!! The finale with Billy Chow and his goofballs at the rope factory is a GLORY FOR THE CENTURIES!!! And humor, and excitement, and the notorious CHANovskoe - UHHH!!!
    And why not?
Because Jackie and his stuntmen were dizzy in three shifts! And Jackie himself loved Keaton and Lloyd + had a desire to do something interesting. Not to show how cool he is, but to thoroughly entertain the viewer!
It's like - I can bake great pies, so why not sell them? Because they will definitely buy them!
And now we have - Why sell? Oh, let me bake some pies! Maybe someone will buy it. And maybe he won’t even put his hooves back!

Here the film failed, take the producer, director and screenwriter and publicly flog them for mocking the audience! And send them to Siberia to clear the snow. All. There's a lot of snow there.
Perhaps then others would no longer be interested in hack work!
Jackie was then completely screwed over for “Lord of the Dragons”! Despite his services to the fatherland in "Young Master". He immediately realized what was happening and ran to Sammo and Yuen + Edward Tang was assigned to him. A good screenwriter who made each of his subsequent films different from each other!!! That's how it went with "PROJECT A" - let's go!!!
The main thing in any business is the head. Especially in the film business.

Celpaso, but you remember the scene in the laboratory, right? And Jaidev also remembered the scene on the sofas. So? You noted this to yourself, these scenes are deposited in your head, they have at least some brightness. But, I won’t go far, here in the news we have a Tim Man video: “Workshop” for the Italian action comedy film “Una Vita Da Sogno”... so what? Has it stuck in your head? Checked in? And don’t blame it on the fact that this is just a draft; I’m afraid that little will change in the final version. This is the difference. I’ll be Captain Obvious and say: even if a fighter has any kind of enchanting, mind-blowing technique, if it’s done uninterestingly, then... it’s uninteresting)

    Author's gravatar

    Ravenside:
The saddest thing is that smart, fighting people working in cinema are losing their grip more and more every day. Tony Jaa burst in with ONG BAK and brought something new. But then some parodies and one-day projects began, instead of developing in this direction.
A good course was in TOM YUM GUNG in the form of going beyond the borders of Thailand. But no. We need to return to the jungle again with weak sequels of ONG BAK. Rave! Is it really impossible to take the past experience of film production and continue, so to speak, high-quality traditions in martial arts?
I’m not talking about our stuntmen at all, because they are treated like... well, nothing at all. Why? Because the lights set themselves up that way. Workers of a limited profession. And if they themselves came up with good stories, filmed and edited the fights themselves, and took most of the competent control over the action scenes, then a lot would change.

    Celpaso:
Well, the fight on the couches was quite interesting. Otherwise I agree.

But at least these two fights can be distinguished. And it was shot well. Again.

    Example:
There's a good movie in the cinema with Jackie or... with Adkins, along with Tim Man, Ron Snurenburg and a dozen other trickers. What are we going to do?
Jackie Chan of course! This is a recognized fact. Why? Because we are interested in what he came up with again and no matter how old he may seem to us.

    Author's gravatar

“And no matter how much we criticize Jackie’s ZODIAC, his fights are still superior in level of interest to Tim Man’s productions, Adkins’ technique and other coolest trickers!”

It's a good joke, but the fact is: except for the scene in the Laboratory, all the other fights suck. The final duel in the sky is without commentary at all.

    Author's gravatar

“Yes, because they are fighters first and only then filmmakers.”
Yes, yes, I often think about this too. Quite often I see that the director or fighter is more eager to show off himself than to film something interesting in general. I see more of a showreel like this: there’s a lot of stuff there, it seems, and this and that... and it all seems professional, but only from the point of view of performance technique, but by and large it’s all boring. And this is also provided that the editing is competent and the operator is holding the camera correctly.
In general, progress in this matter over several decades is very doubtful. In the 2000s, fighting games moved forward and were popularized, in my opinion, only in terms of cables and graphics. Regarding the flying men. But the real professionals of the “real” movie fight were stewing in their own juice. They seem to exist.. but they don’t seem to exist))

    Author's gravatar

Ravenside, you noticed everything correctly. Do you know, by and large, why this happens? Because the level of staging battle scenes has dropped to consumer-grade levels.
Once, in a circle of local filmmakers, we were discussing the creation of a provincial filmmaker and I said that it was cheap garbage. Some people agreed, but others got into an argument, saying in the end that this was a low-budget movie. If only there were more chases and explosions...!
To which I cited the example of the final action scene in “Tiger Cage 2”, first with the shooting, and then with Michael Woods and Robin Shue in the fight with Donnie.
And received a lot of positive feedback. People liked it. And they noted the colorful characters, and said that it was shot well and dynamically.
Why are there so many smart choreographers now, but they can’t do anything?
Yes, because they are fighters first and only then filmmakers! They DO NOT know the psychology of the viewer interacting with cinema.
And no matter how much we criticize Jackie’s ZODIAC, his fights are still superior in level of interest to Tim Man’s productions, Adkins’ technique and other coolest trickers!
Personally, I believe that there is a need for powerful propaganda of action in cinema. Hire a knowledgeable person and organize lectures and seminars. Literally hammer into stupid producers and directors, based on examples, what works and how. Everything is really as simple as day. You need to know the history of cinema, master basic human psychology and love your job.

    Author's gravatar

Jaidev, I agree. I'm just saying that as a result of the activities of such film companies, the audience will have exactly the same opinion - “lots of fights - no money.” More precisely, an opinion is already being formed. I know such people personally. And there are many of them. The meaning and translation of the word “action” - “action” has already been forgotten, replacing it with just a list: chases, explosions (lots of explosions), a lot of graphics, a lot of large crowd scenes... that is, action without battles and destruction is not action As a result, “action” is no longer the nerve of the film, not dynamics, not suspense, and is not aimed at fulfilling artistic goals. It simply becomes an indicator of which of the creators has a bigger pocket, and they measure each other with explosions. Well, just the situation. But if they had good scripts, then all would be well...

    Author's gravatar

    - “That is, if in a film the characters fight a lot and fight well, it means the creators simply did not have money for special effects.”

Jackie once said on this occasion that while he was experimenting with glass, explosions and something else, that’s what they did in Hollywood, mostly explosions! On the same level.
You can make a good horror film without unnecessary bone-crushing and buckets of blood, just like an action or comedy with interesting fights.
    Speaking of fighting games.
Today I watched the old film “With a Sword” (I haven’t watched it since the days of video stores), where Eric Roberts is still starring. Wonderful movie! It would seem like a film about martial art, but it looks interesting. Why? Yes, because the history of human relations is touched upon there.
    And it was filmed superbly!

Does everyone remember the movie RUN with Patrick Dempsey? That's where the action is!!! And what... a huge budget? The film grabs you and doesn't let go for a minute.

    Author's gravatar

But it still seems to me that the difference is very formal. And regarding the blockbuster and fighting game... you know, the situation is as if the creators of high-budget action films (which are aimed at recouping this budget) a good fighting game is often perceived as something “not fashionable” or something, not emphasized, not important, as an artistic device, which there is no need to waste the idea, because you can simply show the fuss in the best traditions of Don Wilson, as I call it), make an imitation so that it is simply clear to the viewer: well, there is a fight here. And turn all your attention to the explosion of skyscrapers or flying monsters. Soon, it seems to me, a high-quality fighting game will be a sign of a dtv film, a “class B” film, and a good fighting game will be transferred there, and soon (if not already) will be associated with this type of film. That is, if in a film the characters fight a lot and well, it means the creators simply did not have money for special effects.

“Is there a fundamental difference between what we saw in the video and any Batman or Spider movie?”

Yes, but the fact that the battles are not of high quality is true.

As Larnell said, “They make great action movies in the US, but why the hell can’t big budget action movies make good fighting scenes?”

    Author's gravatar

In my opinion, it doesn’t matter at all what it is inextricably linked with. In the vast majority of blogbusters, you won't see original or progressive fighting scenes. They are always very stingy, simple, one might say fearful, in a certain sense old-fashioned and easily digestible (and not well filmed). With very rare exceptions. Does Batman specialize in fights? And Spider-Man? Is there a fundamental difference between what we saw in the video and any Batman or Spider movie? No. Because the attention in these films is focused on large details. “Does not specialize” I used precisely in this context.

    Author's gravatar

Standard scenes for a blockbuster that does not specialize in fighting scenes and is aimed at cinemas. Boring.

This blockbuster is inextricably linked with martial arts and the corresponding fighting scenes by the presence of Ninjas in the main characters/villains.

To be honest... in terms of “seriousness” on the level of Power Rangers =)

Standard scenes for a blockbuster that does not specialize in fighting scenes and is aimed at cinemas. Boring.

    Who is the fight director?

Some Frenchman unknown to me, Thomas Dupont. And this man we knew helped him (to our left)

I looked absolutely cold. Like a mummy. Neither give nor take.

Too much 3D, albeit very high quality.

I'll go watch something ancient, dilapidated, but watchable with Sho Kosugi!

I'm kind of unimpressed but I'm still looking forward to the movie
I hope it will show up in my village cinema
